To think our baby surely can't be THAT big??

Posting here for traffic mostly but also feeling a bit 😬 and looking for people who have experienced similar (and can maybe tell me the hospital got it wrong)

Basically I'm 27 weeks pregnant, 4th baby, and have been told I'm measuring 30 weeks by fundal height which I initially disregarded until I had a scan today and they told me baby was measuring 2lb 10oz putting him on the 91st centile line. I don't have big babies generally. The rest of them have been on the smaller side although our twins were premature they were still just below average for gestation up until they were born and our 3rd baby was only 6lb 13oz when she was born at 39 weeks.

Is there any chance they've got this wrong? They only use abdomen and head measurements at this hospital. They don't also use the femur length for growth scans.
There has been some chat of gestational diabetes and I have a GTT on Monday!

I always thought growth scans were really inaccurate but mine was very accurate I had a last minute extra growth scan due to complications and they estimated she was 8 pounds and was born at 6lb10oz, have you need tested for Gestational diabetes?

How was yours accurate if your baby was a different weight to what they estimated or have I read it wrong?

Mummyofbananas · 01/08/2024 20:37

My first baby they said would be big- she was 7lb 8. My next two was told they'd be average sized and they were both around 10lb so i'm not convinced. I think sometimes a tall baby will be estimated higher weight.

(Just to add i'm very short and petite and had very easy labours with the boys, quick and only gas and air, much easier than with my small first baby).

LoveSandbanks · 01/08/2024 20:33

I was told (by consultant) that I was having an average sized baby (7lb - 7 1/2 lb). 4 days later I gave birth to a 9lb baby. It’s all very much best guess 🙄

ALPHAFEMALESINCEBIRTH · 01/08/2024 20:32

i had a whopper baby
baby no 2
he was medically classed as a giant birth

we even made our local paper
article and pictures because of his size and the fact he shouldn't technically been conceived as i have severe PCOS and never had a period(im 43 and half and still never had a period)

he was 11lb11oz and 29 inches
8 days over, 12 hr labour
natural birth but horrendous delivery

he was a clomid baby that took 4 years and i found out at 2 and half weeks

from first scan at 8 weeks he measured weeks ahead for what he was
i know the night i conceived and he was measuring 4-5 weeks before
which i knew was wrong and impossible

i went so big very early i looked full term by 18/19 weeks

i got so big by 41 weeks(they refused a c section as he wasn't in danger)i went from a 14 to a 34 and up to N cup

i put on 7 st

he's just turned 14 (july) and 6ft 2 and 12 st 8 already size 12 shoe
3/4 way through puberty

been head and shoulders above his age literally since birth

as i had a bad birth and needed a operation straight after i had to stay in for 2 days and every medical person at the hospital came up to see us
we were the talk of the place

he was also a very greedy baby
11oz bottle from feed one
by 8 weeks on 16 oz(full bottle and another half)

this went on to every hour and half and needed hungry baby milk

by 5 months i put him on cows milk and weened as he was about 25 llbs and milk wasn't enough

I'm 6ft.his dad 5ft 6
i was 27 inches born

my first son was 28 inches born as well
I've only had 2 but i grow massive babies

Dogwithtoebeans · 01/08/2024 20:24

They told me a couple weeks ago (at 28 weeks) that my baby had a large abdomen (GTT was clear) and that he was 91st centile in terms of abdomen but 65th centile overall? I asked what the margin error is and they said 20% so I’ve decided to take it with a pinch of salt!!

BogRollBOGOF · 01/08/2024 20:23

DS1 was a long, lean 8lb10 at 39+5. My fundus was the equivilent of 45 weeks pg. I had a few growth scans along the way and DS was averagely large. At the final MW check she sighed at the fundus measurement and plotted off near the title above the graph and supposed it was just my normal. It was only a few days after the last growth scan.

I outgrew half my maternity clothes at the end of the second trimester and very little covered my body by the end... which was a tad awkward in the December that was entirely frozen up!

Size 8 with a 43" waist was an interesting look Grin

Blushingm · 01/08/2024 20:21

Scan said my dd was going to be over 13lb, she was actually 8lb 1/2 oz

DillyDallyingAllDay · 01/08/2024 20:20

Are you and/or partner tall? my last baby was measuring 'massive' but arrived at around the 7.5lbs mark but was very tall! The measurements they make on a scan are indicative only and not necessarily the actual reality. However checking for gestational diabetes isn't a bad thing!

0psiedasiy · 01/08/2024 20:15

I was having a ten pound plus baby, he needed to be induced at 37 weeks, I got them to hold off (scans every few days with emphasis on the need to get him out as I'm tiny). He was induced at 40 weeks and weighed less than 9 pounds. Now at 21 years old he is huge.

LizzeyBenett · 01/08/2024 20:11

JuniperAndTonic · 01/08/2024 20:09

The growth scans were completely inaccurate for me too! At my 36 week growth scan they said DD was already 7lb5 and would be way over 9lb at 40 weeks. Tried to convince me to have a c section or induction. Agreed to induction at 40 weeks but not before.

She was born at 38+3 and weighed 6lb14 - she was tiny!! So glad I didn’t agree to the c section!

YellowphantGrey · 01/08/2024 20:01

DS estimated to be 6lb at the most. Monitored weekly from 28 weeks and they were going to induce if he didn't show signs of getting bigger. He was growing but they said not much. Bump was huge but they said it was all water.

I went in at 39 weeks with reduced movements and they were concerned and suddenly raised the idea that I was 35 weeks pregnant not 39.

They re scanned and said I'm definitely way under 39 weeks.

DS was born by induction at 41 weeks 4 days, hardly any fluid and weighing 10lb 60z. They were adamant that I was only around the 37 week mark and that baby would potentially need to go to scbu because of their tiny size.

The midwife who delivered said he should have come out two weeks earlier and was furious that I'd been left so long and had no idea why they suddenly decided I was not as far long as I was.

She was actually very helpful in me bringing a complaint as she gave me all my pregnancy notes and appointment details which the hospital and doctors refused to hand over at first because they said I wasn't entitled to see them.

They definitely get the sizes wrong!

Onelittlebluefish · 01/08/2024 19:57

My 20 week scan measured my baby’s head at the 50th centile. By my growth scan at week 32 or 34 it was measuring 9th centile. I was very worried, but because it wasn’t under the 2nd centile I was told it was fine and still within the normal range! Emergency c-section at 36 weeks and babies head was exactly 50th centile! (I asked the midwife in the operating theatre if the head looked OK and she kindly measured it for me.)

The measurements aren’t always accurate, especially if the angle isn’t quite right. Try not to worry about anything, and see what the measurements are at your next growth scan.

I had this. Was referred back from midwife care to consultant care as I was due to have a very big baby. They were trying to talk me into a c section. I was risking my life, babys life etc if I didnt. As she was my fourth they "allowed" me to attempt vaginal birth on the understanding that I would have a section at the first sign of trouble. She was 6 lbs 4oz, and was always a very small child.

I wouldnt worry too much, especially as they are only using 2 parameters to measure it. Maybe its worth paying for a private (medical) scan to reassure you?

Deary me!

Rather fortunately I'm actually having a growth scan done at a different hospital next week (my care is being moved hospitals for other reasons and today was a one off scan because of some bleeding) so will be interesting to see what this other hospital comes up with!

The growth scans are notoriously inaccurate.

In any case - baby size apparently doesn’t have much impact on your birth outcome.

This

Beth216 · 01/08/2024 19:31

I had extra scans as they were concerned I was underweight and my baby was measuring small. He was over 9lbs.

KatieTaylorMadeMeDoIt · 01/08/2024 19:27

I had scans late in my third trimester for both my DC due to health concerns.

DC1 - predicted to be around 8lbs 6 oz - was 10 lbs 6 oz
DC2 - predicted to be around 9lbs - was 7 lbs 2 oz

Way off! And this was consultant-led care at a top London teaching hospital…

Milkmani8 · 01/08/2024 19:24

My son was 10”4, they kept telling me I was on the larger side but still fine - they would not give away any details on weight etc because as they say it can be inaccurate blah blah. Had an EMCS after 5 day labour, 4 litre haemorrhage and sepsis, hypovolemic shock and cardiac arrest. Only now that I am going through the complaints system and they tested my placenta - turns out I had undiagnosed GD and should have had a CS in the first place at 5ft2 and 8 stone. Please get checked for GD and if offered a CS take it if you’re on the smaller side. To deliver naturally they concluded I should have been induced at 36 weeks. Sometimes the maternity care is a real shambles.

bridgetreilly · 01/08/2024 19:24

9% of babies are bigger than the 91st centile.

HollyLondoner · 01/08/2024 19:23

I was measuring on the 99th percentile and was terrified! I was repeatedly told my baby would be 11-12lbs. He was born on the 50th percentile and 7lbs 🤨. You know best and don't be pressured into anything you don't think is right for you ie induction or c section if that isn't what you want!

MiriamMay · 01/08/2024 19:22

They induced me because they said my daughter was going to be over 11lb. She was actually only 7lb!

Ohdosodoffdear · 01/08/2024 19:20

It's all a load of bollox in my humble opinion.

I had so many scans and stress with dc 2 who was expected to be "small" he was over 9lb and tore me to shreds.

You may as well stick a finger in the air and guess the babies weight.

NewmummyJ · 01/08/2024 19:20

My 2nd baby was over 2lbs heavier than my first, growth scans predicted this, but I disbelieved them due to all these tales of growth scans being inaccurate, but in my case, they were spot on. It was a waste of the tiny baby clothes I'd got assuming I was having another tiny baby!!

Olika · 01/08/2024 19:19

I don't trust them completely. I was stressed as they said DD would be closer to 4kg, she was 2.8kg.
