To think our baby surely can't be THAT big??

Posting here for traffic mostly but also feeling a bit 😬 and looking for people who have experienced similar (and can maybe tell me the hospital got it wrong)

Basically I'm 27 weeks pregnant, 4th baby, and have been told I'm measuring 30 weeks by fundal height which I initially disregarded until I had a scan today and they told me baby was measuring 2lb 10oz putting him on the 91st centile line. I don't have big babies generally. The rest of them have been on the smaller side although our twins were premature they were still just below average for gestation up until they were born and our 3rd baby was only 6lb 13oz when she was born at 39 weeks.

Is there any chance they've got this wrong? They only use abdomen and head measurements at this hospital. They don't also use the femur length for growth scans.
There has been some chat of gestational diabetes and I have a GTT on Monday!

I was tested for GD as my son was apparently massive, on the 98th percentile. I didn't have it and he was born at 37 weeks weighing 6lbs 12oz! He is a very tall two year old now, though.

I don’t mean this to belittle what sounds like an absolutely horrific experience in any way and I agree the OP should have the GTT to be sure about GD…but if she doesn’t have GD there is no reason to think she will grow a baby too big for her to give birth to. I was 9st at term with my son and I’m 5ft tall. He was 10lb6.5oz and I had him with no issues. My family just make large babies.

Your family might make large babies, mine almost killed me. The reason for that is because it was constantly swept under the carpet how big he was. It should be taken seriously. You sound like many people I know whose birth was fine and you just write off anyone else’s bad experiences. Good job my son also survived after 9 weeks in NICU with sepsis that almost killed him too. Like I said she should be checked for GD. I was 8 1/2 stone at term because I lost weight during pregnancy- again something I asked the midwives to look into and they didn’t. If I had known about more bad experiences I might of pushed more for investigation and had an ELCS - but I trusted the midwifery team and shouldn’t have.

My son was 10”4, they kept telling me I was on the larger side but still fine - they would not give away any details on weight etc because as they say it can be inaccurate blah blah. Had an EMCS after 5 day labour, 4 litre haemorrhage and sepsis, hypovolemic shock and cardiac arrest. Only now that I am going through the complaints system and they tested my placenta - turns out I had undiagnosed GD and should have had a CS in the first place at 5ft2 and 8 stone. Please get checked for GD and if offered a CS take it if you’re on the smaller side. To deliver naturally they concluded I should have been induced at 36 weeks. Sometimes the maternity care is a real shambles.

avignon1234 · 01/08/2024 23:29

Yes, I agree with most posters. Somewhat inaccurate. I have a 10lbs2oz boy (week late - 12 hours, but horrendous at end, ventouse, forceps etc.) a 9lbs girl (week late - never knew I was in labour 🙄1 hour labour once realised !) 9lbs13 girl (week late but induced so horrible pain, 3 hours labour) and 8lbs13oz boy (3 weeks early, induced due to previous fast labours and him expected to be 11lbs plus and not getting head down, weight issue was probably fair enough, again, hated induction, 8 hours labour (epidural)) All were a bit off the scale for weight, and in reality they were big babies.

I think the two things you have to watch are GD, must get that sorted, and also if they are channelling you down a road you don't want to go on. I resent being pressurised into being induced for the last two, but they put the fear of god in me. It was not a great process. It is 18 years ago now, but I had to stay in hospital the night before (no sleep) and once it gets going, the pain is continual for hours, and completely different to labour pains, which are painful but they come and go, and you can have gas and air to relieve them. I wish I had waited for both. You've been here before, so you will have a better idea than a 1st one. Good luck xx

RubyBirdy · 01/08/2024 23:15

I was told my DD was the 97th percentile and she was 7lb at 39 weeks.

ForestForever · 01/08/2024 23:12

I think even by today’s standards that growth scans are to be taken with a massive pinch of salt. I was told my DS would be a huge 10lb+ baby and he was in fact 7lb 11.5oz and could only fit into tiny baby sizes. We had to go out and buy all new clothes as the rest absolutely swamped him because we thought we wouldn’t need to buy any newborn sizes.

UpUpAndAwaySheSays · 01/08/2024 23:02

Nah wouldn't worry. My surgeon for my c section held and poked the baby pre and post birth, said it was big, over 10lb, it wasn't. Its a finger in the air.. mine were bigger than yours though at 8.7lb, 9lb and 8.1lb. squishy babies are delish btw 😁 and it really doesn't matter at the end of the day. Congrats OP, you've got this (and thanks for now planting a seed that a 4th isn't an absent thing anymore...trying so hard not to be broody now my littlest is nearly 2!! 😀)

macchampagne · 01/08/2024 22:56

I had a growth scan as measuring small. At the scan baby supposedly measured on the 13th percentile. He was born 2 weeks later on the 67th and has quickly made it up to the 96th!

dunroamingfornow · 01/08/2024 22:47

I was told to expect 9- 10lb baby and had 7lb baby! Think they are notoriously wrong

Babyybabyyy · 01/08/2024 22:43

Growth scans were very accurate for my baby (thankfully not a big baby). They were also very accurate for other women I know (one poor woman had a 10lb baby and her growth scans were accurate). Apparently the scans are less accurate when you're close to giving birth, but you're only 27 weeks.

tornbride1 · 01/08/2024 22:29

I mean they're wildly wrong all the time.

Also 91st isn't that mad. Out of 100 babies lined up smallest to biggest, there would be 8 babies bigger than yours.

FourOfDiamonds · 01/08/2024 22:29

I got induced a week early as they said my baby's head was off the chart big (above the 100th percentile) and would be over 10 pounds. I had a lot of scans too as they were so worried. He was born on his due date (as the induction didn't work) and he was 8.2 pounds with average head size. Since then loads of people have told me they were either predicted too small or too big and the scans were wrong. They might be right but I'd take it with a pinch of salt. Good luck!

jennyt82 · 01/08/2024 22:20

I had a growth scan with my 4th at around 35 weeks. I was asked about the birth weights of my 3 children (7lb 15oz, 6lb 15oz & 7lb 3oz) and was told that this one would be much bigger and closer to 10lb.
He was born at 39+5 and weighed 6lb 4oz!

BumpyaDaisyevna · 01/08/2024 22:13

My second was 9lb 4oz but he wasn't a big chunker, he was just very long and skinny!

There are different kinds of "big babies".

DuskandDawn · 01/08/2024 22:00

Meh. I had two baby, vahinal births, no intervention, 10lb 5oz both of them. Always measured ahead, always large on growth scans. No GD. Consultant just kept saying, you are growing big babies, they'll be fine. And they were. As was I. I'm not big myself, or overweight. Completely average.

MerylSqueak · 01/08/2024 21:58

I was told dd was about 8 and a half pounds after a scan the day before she was born.

She was 6lb 6oz.

PruneInTheNest · 01/08/2024 21:54

Dc1 they wanted to induce me at 40 weeks as they said he was measuring big (over 7.3lbs estimated- which didn’t sound that big to me anyway 🤷‍♀️)
I wanted to refuse but thought following medical advice was the best thing- they all kept going on about how big he was and in a panicky way!
I actually went into spontaneous labour that evening at home (induction scheduled for following day!) and he was born just 6lbs. So well under what they had estimated on the scan!

They then made me have extra scans with dc2 as they said dc1 was a low birth weight! I felt like I couldn’t win! So I would take any scans with a pinch of salt - it is just an estimate

OlympicsFanGirl · 01/08/2024 21:29

I was told my first was going to be about 8lbs.

He's was 10lbs 8oz.

thursdaymurderclub · 01/08/2024 21:24

my first baby was 8lbs 9oz... i was told my 2nd was going to be bigger... my 2nd weighed in at just 6lb's

greglet · 01/08/2024 21:22

@BogRollBOGOF sounds similar to me - DS was long and lean. I’m 5'11", DH is 6'0" and our brothers are 6'5" and 6'2" so I think he's just designed to be long and thin!

Maternity tops didn't cover my bump for the last few weeks; luckily it was a May heatwave so I just let it all hang out 😂

greglet · 01/08/2024 21:14

I was told DS would be 7lb6oz ish. He was 8lb 13oz 😆

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 01/08/2024 20:53

There's quite a big chance they've got it wrong. I did have gestational diabetes and had extra growth scans at the end of my pregnancy because of it. My son consistently measured at the 90th percentile on all of them. I was induced at 39 weeks because they were concerned that if he got any bigger I would need a c section. When he was born it was discovered he was actually only at the 49th percentile and I was just carrying more fluid than they thought. My "big" baby was only 7 lbs 4 ounces.

BloodandGlitter · 01/08/2024 20:53

Told me DD would be about 7lb I was just fat, DD was 10lb 4.

LizzeyBenett · 01/08/2024 20:47

@YellowphantGrey it wasn't far off is what I mean .

Newuser75 · 01/08/2024 20:46

They told me my second baby was going to be huge. He was 7lb 15. Not tiny but massive by any stretch of the imagination.
