Sexism prevails on MN

SlidingDoors1 · 01/08/2024 13:13

We currently have two threads that really do show the mentality of Mn

1- A female whose husband doesn't want to go on family camping holidays (is being advised by some to leave him and how abysmal he is because he doesn't want to go camping)

2 - A female whose mother is dying presently (and is being advised by many MNers to go on holiday and leave him to deal with this turmoil alone

Hw strange and double standards

That isn't what double standards means OP. However, I couldn't care less if there are DS in favour of women on here, or if some people think there is a culture of 'sexism' against men. MN is one site out of countless options that happens to have a mainly female demographic, is largely pro women and tends to centre women's interests over those of men. Which imo is absolutely fantastic, and long may it continue. There is little enough out there that prioritises women over men, so this one site isnt much to ask for. And if people don't like it, there are many many other sites where they will not encounter it, and they are free to frequent those instead.

@ChockysChimichanga "A lot of MNers appear to think men exist solely to provide for them and not have any needs of their own"

Bollocks. Mumsnet is full of women bending over backwards to accommodate men's wants/needs. The camping one was a case in point. Loads of posters, presumably women, seeing no reason why a man should inconvenience himself even slightly for the sake of his wife and children.

Way to selectively quote there. I actually said that there are a lot of awful men out there.

What I think is sad is that a lot of women on here view their (non abusive, perfectly reasonable) partners as something to be tolerated. And how quickly the advice is to LTB for the most trivial thing. I was genuinely a bit shocked to be told by multiple posters that I should leave my husband because instead of me helping him through a traumatic event, as couples do in a relationship, I should just leave.

While there are still some genuinely good and supportive threads for women on here, I think unfortunately the site has become overwhelmed with toxicity.

That's a lot of filtering you've done there to come to the conclusion the whole of MN (bar you i presume) think the one way.

Attention to detail isn't your strong point then?

PootleRosie · 01/08/2024 19:26

Bless you trying to create a theory to try and come across all clever. Nope, you are not making sense. Try harder next time.

ChockysChimichanga · 01/08/2024 19:23

A lot of MNers appear to think men exist solely to provide for them and not have any needs of their own. I remember posting a few years ago asking for advice on how to support my husband who was going through a traumatic experience and the replies were largely along the lines that if he wasn’t meeting my needs then I should leave him.

There are a lot of awful men out there, but when I see a woman posting about how she wishes her DH would just fuck off back to the office and leave her alone to potter about the house with the kids while he pays the bills, I feel quite sad for them.

LittleGreenDragons · 01/08/2024 19:17

CurlewKate · 01/08/2024 18:20

@LittleGreenDragons "Why would a female, aka woman, let her husband deal with his mils death? Why would he?"

It's his mother. She is unconscious. The discussion is about whether the mother should take their child away on a short holiday, leaving the man and his brother to sit with her during the time between now and her inevitable death. The man has said she should go for the sake of the child. She was unsure- hence the thread.

So the OP can't even be bothered to get their question right as it implies it's the woman's mother who is dying. What an idiot.

2. A female whose mother is dying

IncompleteSenten · 01/08/2024 19:16

Your use of the word females reveals you.

BIWI · 01/08/2024 19:10

Why wouldn't a site aimed predominantly at women be pro-women though, @Boomer55?

And you only have to spend an hour or so reading the relationships board to understand why so many of us might be 'a bit' anti-men.

It's not rocket science.

RockyRogue1001 · 01/08/2024 18:26

TAAT x 2, innit

Boomer55 · 01/08/2024 18:26

MN is a bit anti-men, and pro-women. No matter what the scenario.🤷‍♀️

Hmm

I thought of Friday Night Dinner too.

OP, is there any particular reason why you didn't just say 'women'?

misogynyisbigotry · 01/08/2024 15:13

Well, sexism is certainly present - just for example, the post that started this thread uses a misogynistic dogwhistle - but I'm not sure if it "prevails". There are a lot of posters here working against it.

Most days, multiple people post here. Pretty much anyone can, except previously banned posters who are reported and identified by the mods as such. It's really easy to set up an anonymous account. There isn't a single "mentality". If you feel that a particular poster is espousing a double standard, why not ask that poster for clarification in the relevant thread? Situations are nuanced, and the other poster might have spotted another factor besides sex that you missed.

WhichEllie · 01/08/2024 15:03

You’ve not bothered to read the camping thread. The OP has already commented here to set you straight, but the issue is that her husband doesn’t give a damn about her and the children. He just spends all his time working and avoiding them.

CremeEggThief · 01/08/2024 15:00

Are you a new poster, OP?

It's not really the done thing to post a TAAT on here.

You have made a bit of a faux pas.

PickAChew · 01/08/2024 14:57

Some gotcha, eh, OP?

bombastix · 01/08/2024 14:57

HarpieDuJour · 01/08/2024 13:36

The use of "Female" as a noun where the correct word is "Woman" tells me that I can pretty much disregard the rest of a post.
It's fine for giraffes, gorillas and fish, but there is a good, easy to spell word for adult human females. We are women.

Yes. Not mardy livestock as the OP implies

Redhil · 01/08/2024 14:55

MolkosTeenageAngst · 01/08/2024 13:24

The majority of people on the camping thread think the OP is being unreasonable to expect her husband to join her if he doesn’t want to. Obviously some people disagree but no thread will ever have 100% of replies saying the same thing.

The OP with the unwell MIL has been told by her DH he thinks she should go, he’s not begging her to stay. Also whilst lots of people are saying go there are also some saying stay.

Neither thread is 100% on either side, plus I don’t really see that the threads have a huge amount of relevance to each other. They are two completely different situations so I really don’t see your point.

Edited

I think the point op is making is we give allowances for women to decide what do but if a man wants to not go on a trip in this instance we demand she ltb. I'm not saying I agree in full as there are mixed answers but I do see the point in what op is saying as I read the mil dying thread and i saw alot of ppl saying go.. and I was thinking wow if that' was her saying it was mum dying and her hubby went away we'd all be up in arms.. I told that op not to go but of course it's up to her at the end of the day.

C1N1C · 01/08/2024 14:26

We need more men here for a balanced point of view!!!

(sorry, couldn't resist)

MonsteraMama · 01/08/2024 14:15

Oh no, did you just learn for the first time that "females" are not in fact a hive mind and have lots of different opinions about different situations? Is everything you've been told about "the trouble with females" a lie?

Bless.

Purpleskiesabove · 01/08/2024 14:12

Also, if you’d taken the time to fully read my post including the further comments, you’d maybe understand that it’s not just as simple as you’ve stated. There’s no sexism on my behalf; just a woman wanting to be a priority in her DH’s life and wanting him to prioritise her and DC rather than always prioritising his business.
