Cutting fingernails at the kitchen table - gross or not?

Prompted by me finding a fingernail clipping on the kitchen table!

DH thinks it's fine to cut his nails at the table. I think it's horrible and he should do it elsewhere. He reckons it's just me, and most people would think it was ok.

(Obviously not during mealtimes, to be clear. Just in general.)

YABU - it's completely fine
YANBU - grim

Yanbu. Nail clipping should be done in the garden.

No-one has yet explained why the clean fingernails that are fine to cook/bake/handle food with suddenly become 'grim' and 'vile' when cut off.

They're still as clean as they were moments before i cut them, and they go in the bin.

Why is it grim/vile?

It's not rocket science!! They can take off in any direction and I for one have no desire to find them in my food!

Runnerinthenight · 05/08/2024 20:28

It's disgusting! It's a bathroom task!

GordonRamsey · 05/08/2024 20:27

It's fine, we do it all the time in the kitchen, those sharp knives are ideal.
If a bit does 'ping' off into the soup or something and is spotted by a customer we tell that is just a bit of onion!
It can be a real laugh working in a kitchen, I can tell you! 😂🤣😉

I had a boss once who used to do it in his office!

AgnesX · 05/08/2024 17:43

Nearly 60% think it's ok. Wow and yuck!

ChallengingFigureANDUnrulyFlaps · 05/08/2024 17:39

Cutting your fingernails in the kitchen is slobby and disrespectful. Setting a bad example to kids.
I can't believe so many of you think this is ok. No wonder I never eat anyone's home baking. Envy

ChallengingFigureANDUnrulyFlaps · 05/08/2024 17:37

All ablutions should be in the bathroom.
I would die if I found a fingernail where I eat.

blackcatsarethebestcats · 05/08/2024 17:37

Weird. No. Do it in the bathroom.

Sux2buthen · 05/08/2024 17:36

I used to be a cleaner at a solicitors firm and one lady used to leave her toenail clippings on the floor for me to hoover. It was the kind of carpet where they were snagged and stuck.
Not relevant at all but this reminded me

Vile. Do it in the bathroom.

Why is it vile?

Why is it grim?

Is he allowed to touch the table with his nails? Do they suddenly become vile and grim the moment they're detached from a persons body by a pair of clippers?

It's horrible he didn't clean it up.. but the act of clipping nails at the table is not 'grim' and thinking so is bloody weird.

This

Emmz1510 · 05/08/2024 16:56

It’s fine so long as he clears up properly.

WickieRoy · 01/08/2024 11:11

As long as the clippings are cleaned up and no one is actually eating it wouldn't bother me.

Actually, wouldn't bother me while eating either as long as the clippings weren't flying around. It's not something that's unhygienic.

PashaMinaMio · 01/08/2024 11:10

I can empathise with where you’re coming from but clippings in your scrambled eggs might not be fun!

Just tell him to put a towel on the table. A dark coloured one so he can see his clippings. Gather up towel and ditch clippings. (Keep a small dedicated (guest) towel for his use where he can easily find it.)

He might need training.

If he doesn’t compromise like this, next time you catch him at it, surreptitiously rescue some clippings and add them to his next soft meal/snack/coffee. For sure his tongue will reject them. Watch his face!

“Oops, sorry darling but if you will clip at the kitchen table, some clips might escape.”

Howtonamechange · 01/08/2024 11:01

Yes that's grim.

Okayornot · 01/08/2024 10:31

Fine as long as he clears up.

Gross was my FIL clipping his toenails into the bathtub (in which I bathe my children) and just leaving the clippings for me to get rid off.

DoopSnoggySnogg · 01/08/2024 10:17

Doing it - fine
Not clearing away clippings - not fine

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 01/08/2024 10:13

Where would be a good place?

Sitting at a table catches them.

Pinkypinkyplonk · 01/08/2024 10:05

As above!

Catza · 01/08/2024 10:04

Doesn't bother me as long as the person clears up after themselves. Your husband clearly didn't so that is problematic.
