The upper middle class favour immigration because the alternative would be paying locals more and that would men them paying higher taxes to support the wage demands by care workers/Nurses/council workers etc.

I work in a very deprived area and immigration is having a negative impact. That’s not me being racist but a fact. Social tensions are sky high and it all
comes down to housing primarily. Many working classes communities have simply had enough.

Because OP- the reason they have allowed mass immigration in last few years is due to Brexit and large gaps in the workforce. They forgot to mention that on the side of a bus. The fact is the working classes don't want to do certain jobs and would rather not work even if you offer higher money -and why should the workers you mention earn more than a hospital doctor who has 7 years of study and a ton of debt to qualify

Because, the market rules.

I am definetly not Dutch.

Just bigoted then

YourOpinionIsWrong · 31/07/2024 23:50

It’s okay if you are Dutch. Genetically really similar to the English.

Poor people are affected much more by immigration. Unskilled jobs, social housing. Many immigrants work for less than minimum wage, and they go straight to the front of the social housing queue, especially if they have children. I don't blame them for any of this, I blame the government.

Immigrants don’t go ‘straight to the front of the social housing queue’. If you need social housing and have children, you’re a higher priority than people with no children, but being an immigrant does not make you a higher priority. Please don’t write stuff like this that’s not true.

50k is excessive. But how much would you want to work in a care home?

Well, it would depend on what my other options were, I suppose. And that would depend on skills, qualifications and experience etc.

You’re the one who suggested £50k. How about £30k instead? And we all pay higher taxes to fund it (the wealthier you see, the more tax you pay).

EveSix · 31/07/2024 23:46

Acapulco12 · 31/07/2024 23:22

That’s the government’s responsibility. The government needs to raise the salary. It’s got nothing to do with immigrants.

Nurseries are often private businesses though (including MAT nurseries) and can set salaries as they please, unless they're local authority nurseries attached to local authority schools, in which case staff are on a council grade. Neither here nor there really ‐I totally agree, unemployment is still not the fault of immigration.

MeouwCat · 31/07/2024 23:45

So how will anyone afford care?

I'm all in favour of paying fair wages and taxing the rich more but that alone isn't going to be enough if we're paying every care worker £50k.

Can you not remember the protests by British tradesmen when Labour were in power under Tony Blair? Gordon Brown promising British jobs for British workers?

Of course mass immigration has an effect on UK workers.

Apologies. I was 5 then, so no I don’t remember.

It’s not racist but it’s not correct. Immigrants coming to the U.K. to work do not take jobs way from British-born people. Nor do they make it harder for working class people.

By increasing the charges and taxes on the upper middle class.

Which is exactly what our govt is planning to do. Are you in favour of that? If you are, then I don’t see what the problem is.

Acapulco12 · 31/07/2024 23:42

orchiddottyback · 31/07/2024 23:31

One way to test your theory @MeouwCat . Let's see where the liberal upper middle classes house all these groups of people. It's for certain they won't be in the Islington bubble or leafy green upper class suburbs will it.

Because they all seem to be dumped in buildings in my run down area.

Edited

Who are ‘these people’? Immigrants are not just vulnerable people who are crossing the Channel to get to the U.K. And why is it the responsibility of the upper middle classes to house them?

VerySadCase · 31/07/2024 23:41

MeouwCat · 31/07/2024 23:37

No, of course as been previously shared, you need to be compassionate and hard working to be in a care home. So the other workers wouldnt get that.

So how will anyone afford care?

I'm all in favour of paying fair wages and taxing the rich more but that alone isn't going to be enough if we're paying every care worker £50k.

Social care is largely provided by the private sector but they are paid by local authorities.

So if you are willing to pay more towards LAs then we'd be able to increase the wages of social care.

No, I am not upper middle class, So it wouldnt fall on me. My Mum is 93 and lives in her own house. She still helps out with child care of her great grand children. Hopefully I will live as long and as healthily as Mum.

By increasing the charges and taxes on the upper middle class.

. . . and exactly how much money per year will that raise?

MeouwCat · 31/07/2024 23:37

VerySadCase · 31/07/2024 23:35

So, OP, in this fictional world where you're working in a care home for £50k, are you hair to pay much higher prices for all of your goods and services so that all of the other unskilled and semiskilled workers can be paid £50k as well? And are you happy to pay taxes so that public sector workers also get their basic salary of £50k? Of course, the highly qualified roles like doctors will need to be paid much more to reflect their skills and qualifications.

Your purchasing power is unlikely to be any greater after everything is adjusted for, but at least the number on your annual P60 will look a bit better?

No, of course as been previously shared, you need to be compassionate and hard working to be in a care home. So the other workers wouldnt get that.

So, if we didnt import carers then what would happen? IO would work in a care home for 50k a year, so the reason we cant get carers is that the wages arent high enough.
