Aibu to agree to an extent?

German refugee charity warns 'integration has FAILED'

In a bombshell interview, staff at a leading youth organisation in Germany have said the continuing influx of refugees means the system is at breaking point. They called for a 'freeze' in admissions.

Thank you @taylorswift1989 this is the third time on the thread my words have been twisted & misquoted. @Piggywaspushed further asked me & I replied I have no idea as to what his motives are.
@Piggywaspushed the absolute cheek of you to blatently insinuate that is actually mind blowing. His nationality is a fact the very same as yours or mine.

No insinuation necessary.

You stated his nationality and then said he hadn't integrated.

Not sure what else you could possibly have meant.

Rainbowsponge · 31/07/2024 17:02

that I didn’t accept the tendency whereby way all immigrants are made to stand for the actions of any criminals.

I agree, but when a man commits a crime like the one in Southport, we call it ‘male violence’ and say it’s a problem with men. How is this squared?

Werweisswohin · 31/07/2024 16:04

My point was that saying 'immigrants should learn the language and integrate' applies to everyone.

I am from an immigrant family who yes, learned the lingo.
I do not care what Spain does or doesn’t do about ex pats. I do care about integration of immigrants in the UK.

The Olympic opening ceremony was evidence of this.

Sorry, when did the Olympic Opening Ceremony persecute Christians? Or attack them in any way?
Wait. You don’t still think the 17 people standing in a row behind Dionysus was a parody of the 13 people in the painting of The Last Supper do you? It’s a different painting, ironically one which served as inspiration for The Last Supper one.
Seriously, apart from the discrepancy in numbers, did you ever wonder why a painting by an Italian might feature? No, it was about Dionysus, one of the original ‘Olympians’.
You don’t seem particularly well informed about currently hot issues, OP

Anti social behaviour is unacceptable, period. I'm surprised you can't offer any empathy if you're going through similar problems.

I can't if it is their race you choose to blame, I'm afraid.

ghostyslovesheets · 31/07/2024 16:57

OP you started this and say you want to discuss solutions - why/how what can be done etc

So maybe start with that - why do YOU think it's 'failed' and what would you change?

Anyone really craving a Spezi now?

It's this kind of disingenuous bigotry which is destroying any trust that moderate people previously had in the left. I'm a lifelong left winger, but I'm now totally alienated by the way people like you treat me. It's shocking to me that you think it's normal to equate my concerns with a desire to throw bricks at mosques. What do you hope to achieve? You say that 'great many' on the left are prepared to enter these discussions, but that's absolutely not been my experience in recent years. I had to leave the Labour party due to verbal & physical intimidation. When you constantly jump to hyperbolic conclusions and deploy unwarranted insults against anyone with legitimate concerns, it's actually you who comes across as the small-minded bigot. Please point me to where & how the left is tackling the behaviour of Islamist fundamentalists and their enablers (who include the police, councillors, MPs and other public servants and sections of the MSM). What's happening is utterly insidious, I really hope you can overcome your prejudice and actually start investigating this properly.

I despair. I really do. The point I made was that I didn’t accept the tendency whereby way all immigrants are made to stand for the actions of any criminals. And I gave an example of that. How on Earth can any constructive discussion ever take place if people just refuse to engage? It could be a genuine conversation - about solutions, about finding ways forward. But no. You asked for examples of how the left are tackling Islamic extremism. In my town (in Sweden), the centre left council invest heavily in areas at risk from such problems - working preventatively, improving social facilities and conditions for people to use public spaces. They fund free parent groups open to all, that also offer initiatives to support integration of women immigrants at risk of isolation. They collaborate with local sports clubs to provide opportunities for girls to take part in sports who may not otherwise have been permitted to do so. There are many more local and national examples. These are not quick fixes, but there are no quick fixes to complex problems, surely?

It’s hardly news though is it, much of Europe has been seeing an ongoing rise in the far right, anti immigrant rhetoric, even in countries like Sweden and often it’s the young people voting for far right parties. If you try and transplant people with highly conservative values, sometimes with culturally misogynistic and homophobic beliefs into countries where the rights of women and freedom of religion / politics are upheld in law, you are always going to have clashes of beliefs. I as a British person with German ancestry was aware of the cultural differences when I lived in Germany - there was issues with acceptance of Turkish “ gastarbeiters” when I was there in the 1980s - so it’s no surprise people from other cultures have challenges living there, it’s no different in that respect to the uk but Germany has always been itself a conservative minded country where you are expected to follow the rules, the uk is far more individualistic and tolerant of difference.

When I worked as a supply teacher in London the very 'best', most memorable class I taught was majority non white. Of the two most difficult classes I ever taught one was completely white and the other was mixed with high racial tensions between the different groups. The glaring difference between the 'best' and 'worst' was always about deprivation, never about skin colour.

I'm always confused by threads like these - are we talking about refugees? people who have been forced to leave their home or are we talking about immigrants, people who have come here to work? Surely they're two very different groups and are treated differently by the government? Or are we talking about illegal immigrants another group again? I think it's really difficult to have any kind of useful discussion when it's not even clear what's being discussed. Even the article jumps between using the terms refugees and immigrants.

The problem here seems to be that the people in the article are refugees that are arriving in Germany with probably very little, fleeing war and probably not able to speak German making it very difficult to find work. Of course they are going to struggle to integrate if they don't speak the language, can't work or work in low paid jobs. Of course they are going to stick with people who do speak their language and who have the same culture and beliefs they do. But this obviously can also lead to huge problems especially amongst the children who are caught between cultures, probably living in poverty, unhappy, vulnerable to exploitation and radicalisation.

It very messy and difficult and pretending it's not a huge problem is not helpful - I think I saw that 350,000 refugees arrived in Germany last year, the most since their open door policy in 2015 - and unfortunately this issue has led to a rise in the far right across Europe. I don't know what the answer is though and that's the problem, no one does. What do we do with the huge numbers of people that are being displaced across the world?

No I most certainly did not. It's a fact he was Algerian living in Ireland over 20 years. A fact reported by mainstream media. How fucking dare you imply I said it was due to his nationality.

I'm not the one who made the comment ( did you report it?) about Venezuela but I am on that thread so laughing at me behind my back like a schoolyard bully isn't working very well.

There are right wing posts all over this thread.

The OP has already suggested the man in Ireland stabbed schoolchildren because he was Algerian and makes constant oh so funny jibes at ' lefties'. I'm glad these serious issues are such fun.

I never said it was because he was Algerian. Where the FUCK did I say that? I mentioned his nationality which was a FACT all over the media, when the man was born. I never said he did it BECAUSE of his nationality. How bloody dare you.

I can see it's failed here.

I live in a very heavily immigrant populated area. Most of the women don't speak English. The men are very dismissive of English people. There's absolutely no attempt to join together in the community.

I go in the local shops and try to make small talk and am completely blanked.

The kids are just awful. I was told to 'shut the fuck up you bitch' yesterday as I asked 2 young children to stop poking things under my gate and barking at my dogs as it was upsetting them.

I've lived in very ethnically diverse council estates my whole life so when I was offered a home here I didn't hesitate to take it as I've never had any issues with anyone.
But this is another level and I'm genuinely shocked at what I've seen over the last 6 months.

Why wasn't a referendum called? Surely that would be the correct process especially as it's mainly funded by taxpayers?
