Has anyone heard of that horrid south port attack 3 children died from 17 year old boy stabbing them at a Taylor Swift dance class? 😭 with stabbings in uk AIBU to wanna home school her ? I’m honestly soo scared to send her to school. She’s only 9 months but I keep on thinking for her future . I’m in Northern Ireland I know this awful attack happened in England but it happens everywhere and I’m genuinely terrified for my baby.

Then you're wrapped up in your own little bubble. I'm reporting this. You've started this to be offensive and you're way off the mark.

Lentilweaver · 31/07/2024 10:54

Yes, women and children are far more likely to be killed by men in their family.

You can't wrap your DC in cotton wool and homeschooling is far tougher than it appears.

No need for the laughing emoji. Not really a laughing matter is it. Do one.

That’s not a laughing emoji ? You’re on my thread , you do one x

No, just you. The rest of us live under rocks.
You sound unwell.

When i got my hair done yesterday and asked the girl who did my hair had she heard she said no. Not everyone watches the news or lives on their phone :)

Well my mum hasn’t heard of it when I told her 😅 so not everyone knows . And I never said that and I made it clear in comments I knew it wasn’t at a school . I never said I wouldn’t , but I’d feel anxious about it

@Ella2001

yes the world can be a dangerous place, it is also a wonderful and exciting place. Life is meant to be lived. Homeschooling would not protect your child from randon attacks.
I’m an adoptive parent and foster carer, I know many children who have been abused by their families. About 65 children a year are murdered at the hands of their families, far more than this incident, shocking and tragic as it is.
A couple of years ago a 5 year old boy died a few streets away from where I live. His grandmother had a mental health crisis and stabbed him
Its not just random strangers who do these things

This is just awful 😭

I think it's a natural reaction OP. Everyone wants to keep their child safe. Mines only a baby and I struggle with watching the news at times, it feels like we are bringing them into such a horrible, cruel world. I know it's always been the way but I think those post partum hormones change the way you views things. I have friends in America who are homeschooling due to shootings in schools (although it is far more common).

If you weren't considering homeschooling before then I think looking at the security in the schools and clubs you choose is a better outcome for your child. Most of our local secondary schools only have the one entrance and exit though reception and a locked door that the receptionist needs to unlock for you. Lots of our local clubs however are in little village halls or libraries which are left open. Maybe security will be tightened as a response?

@Ella2001 I think you are being unfairly treated in this thread.

My son is 25 and they have had their first daughter. We live in NI too and thank god for it every day.

I think we don't see half the social issues they do in England. I have relatives in Liverpool and this has been the decider for them to move home.

Home schooling isn't as Prevalent here as it is over there. However it does seem to be popular choice in Special needs kids. (I home schooled my youngest as he was not being taught the curriculum in his SN school)

Your wee baby is only 9 months and you are still shiny new mummy and wanting to protect her from everything.

You will learn as she grows that she needs more than you to flourish and I can bet by the time she is 4 you will be glad of the respite for her to go to school.

Our culture and society in NI is different to that over the water at the minute. I honestly feel we are safer. Long may that last.

Enjoy being a mama and cherish this time with baby. Don't let anxiety rule your life or detract from your parenting. Join social groups for mums and babies and socialise in a safe space. ❤️

The same Northern Ireland that has a long history of violence with the Troubles?

NI is one of the safest places in Europe, and Ireland one of the safest in the world. Listening to a news programme yesterday on the issue of knife crime, it said that NI does not have knife crimes, in the same way they seem to occur in other parts of the UK. Schools are also very safe here, and there is not a gang culture. I do not worry one bit about sending my dc to schools or clubs in NI.

i do feel slightly better after knowing this

Statistically more likely your LO will come to harm by you or your family.

Life is scary, but this event is a once in a lifetime thing - like Dunblane.

Or Dublin (21.12. 2023) ? Or Annecy (08. 06. 2023 ) France ?

That’s a pretty short lifetime (especially for some of the victims)

It is,scary but these things are rare. It's normal to feel overwhelmed with emotions and a baby.

Think of it this way, my ds has a gf who was home schooled, home degree abd works from home. He said she can't even ask for help in a shop. She needs ds to help her function. I don't really want my son being this girls carer as she is so socially stunted ( I'd never voice that of course). She has been so over protected she can't be independent.

My own dd is very confident.

Well after this, I won’t be homeschooling her. I probably never would have anyway just wanted to know other peoples thoughts

I'm just slightly rethinking that I know in America school shootings are sometimes cited as a factor in parents choosing to homeschool.

I don't know how valid that is as guns are a bigger thing in the United States, mass shootings still occur outside schools so I don't know how realistic statistically it is.

Needless to say the UK is different as regards mass school/group killings which are far far rarer.

There are over 360 school shootings a year in the USA, you can buy bullet proof backpacks for your children and ovously the chances of this happening will vary from state to state. But it's so common now that we don't here about every incident unless it involves mass casualties. We have been watching a US show (SWAT for anyone interested) they had one episode coving this topic. They talked about how to spot early signs to prevent incidents. I'm still amazed that there isn't a bigger call to ban guns in the US for this reason especially the semi automatic kind which have been involved in the most recent mass shootings.

As far as the UK goes we are in a much better position, guns aren't available and while knives are an issue they aren't as deadly as a semi automatic. Schools here are already difficult to enter due to safeguarding in recent years.

I think it's groups like this that are more venerable and easier to target.

Are the people who keep asking is she never going to leave the house actually reading the thread or just jumping on to take a pop at the wee girl!

Can yes read?? She's telling you all you're not listening! FFS!

How has your mum not heard of it?

Does she live in a bubble with no radio, or tv or speak to anyone outside at all?

Investinmyself · 31/07/2024 10:46

Even if you homeschool it’s not healthy to be with child 24/7. Children need to socialise independently. Most attend some type of activity sports, dancing, brownies. What if she wants to do something you can’t constantly say no.
My mum’s elderly neighbour was an only born in war (dad killed) and basically she and mum were always together. She didn’t marry until later life and husband moved in. She was bereaved by both husband and mum dying in quick succession and in her 70s had never been in a shop alone etc. She barely leaves house and whilst she’s had a long life she hasn’t lived.

Has anyone heard of it? Anyone who hasn't must be living under a rock. And frankly, get a grip on yourself. They weren't killed at school. Are you never going to take your daughter to a 2 hour activity?

Has anyone heard of it? Hmm

I would rush to send your child to school when its time, you are too anxious to home school a child

Lentilweaver · 31/07/2024 10:45

No I haven't heard of the Southport attacķ at all.🙄
Get help for your anxiety.

KreedKafer · 31/07/2024 10:44

There are certainly valid reasons that you might want to homeschool a child.

Being scared that they will be stabbed if they leave the house without you is not a valid reason.

You really, really need to deal with your anxiety because this is a disproportionate and irrational response.

I'm not sure if anyone has picked up on the OP being from Northern Ireland. While she herself seems too young to have lived through the troubles, her parents and people around her won't be - and people's decision making was definitely impacted by the fear of sudden attacks - well that's the point of terrorism really, to provoke fear. OP this is a much safer time for you to be bringing your lo up than it was previously, and you are in generally a safer part of the U.K.

Thank you !
