‘Children’ and ‘adults’ in Southport massacre

Supersimkin7 · 30/07/2024 20:43

All the papers are reporting that the Southport victims are ‘children’ who
were protected by ‘adults’.

The Southport victims are little girls who were protected by two women, now fighting for their lives.

No one needs to report what sex the killer is.

Male violence against women is a national emergency, say the police.

AIBU to think misgendering a massacre is the lowest of the low?

@WhyIOughtTo Apparently I still can’t quote on browser instead of the app! see above.

MrsTerryPratchett · 30/07/2024 22:09

When’s the ‘right time’ to acknowledge VAWG though?

There never seems to be one.

Nor to acknowledge that it's male violence. Never a right time.

RaisedEyebrows11 · 30/07/2024 22:07

No fair point, I had actually meant to quote a PP who was asking about, I thought, how posters knew the sex of the poor children who died. I’m of the opinion that it’s not really the time to have the VAWG discussion, this is all so awfully tragically raw, but I can understand why women are thinking it. I certainly am - why do so many men keep killing. Why. It’s so hopeless 😞

Ted27 · 30/07/2024 22:07

It wasn't advertised as being for girls

GoldThumb · 30/07/2024 22:07

Today is not the day to be getting on a soapbox. Have a bit of empathy for parents who have an empty bed at home, some forever

You can make this political another day, but not today

The class was advertised as being for girls. It was an murderous attack on girls. Reporting it as an attack on 'children' hides the misogyny.

Do you know that because you live in the area? Even then, it's unlikely that they would have turned a boy away if they had wanted to go.

WhyIOughtTo · 30/07/2024 22:03

RaisedEyebrows11 · 30/07/2024 22:00

The children have been named and photos released on all news sites

Even the ones still in hospital?

fiddleleaffig · 30/07/2024 22:03

Maybe there were boys at the dance class? My 8 year old son is a massive Swiftie and would have loved it. Stop presuming it's only girls who like dance, yoga and Taylor Swift (look who's being misogynistic now)

CurbsideProphet · 30/07/2024 22:03

The time will come for discussions. Seeing as though this only happened yesterday, for now please respect the fact that news agencies are being careful in their reporting to protect the families involved.

mitogoshi · 30/07/2024 22:02

They had to be vague to allow time for the families of the victims to be contacted before news was in the public sphere. Men did rush to help and at least one was injured. This isn't about sex, it's about private tragedies for the families involved, great sadness for the wider community, life changing experience for the emergency services and first responders who may need extensive help, and yes a family forever changed because their loved one committed these atrocities, the details still to be revealed.

Mongrelsrbeautiful · 30/07/2024 22:01

There were boys and girls there, and men stabbed

LlamaNoDrama · 30/07/2024 22:01

Every news outlet is also clear a17yo BOY (not youth) was arrested.

They can still report it as VAWG.

I’m using misgendering in a different way to how TRAs employ it but the point remains that de-sexing or unsexing a person usually benefits someone else. TRAs use it to benefit men, who are the overall winners in this game.

Funny, that.

In the Southport case calling the dead girls ‘children’ and their lady rescuers ‘adults’ allows us to think that violence is a human vice, not a mostly male fault with a substantial target of female victims. Which isn’t true.

It allows us to think that some men don’t kill females cos they are female, which isn’t true.

We can’t fix this till we tell the truth.

BBC news says 3 girls killed in knife attack, sky news says the two adults are locally rumoured to be a female and male.

EsmaCannonball · 30/07/2024 22:00

But if it was an attack on any other group that information would be seen as important. If Jewish people or gay men or black people had been targeted by a man on a rampage then the identity of the victims would be seen as salient. The media wouldn't just report it as a group of 'people' being attacked, they would be more specific. This man sought out young girls to kill. Most stranger murders of women and girls aren't carried out by someone looking for a 'person' to kill, they are carried out by someone hunting for a female.

JackGrealishsCalves · 30/07/2024 21:58

Oh ffs, 3 children died, does it matter if they were girls or boys?

Tir3edAndTested · 30/07/2024 21:55

To be honest, I think it was probably some crazed, troubled lad who for whatever reason targeted that dance school, had the instructors been male and the kids also boys I think they'd have sadly had the same outcome.

GoldThumb · 30/07/2024 21:54

I agree with you OP, How can VAWG be tackled if we can’t discuss it, and name it?

These terrible ‘solitary’ incidents are happening far to often

Poor babies 😢

It's still not misgendering. No matter how much you try to make the cap fit.

Is it not enough for you that children have been stabbed to death?

HeyTalkToMeGoose · 30/07/2024 21:51

Weirdo..... nobody is 'benefitting' from this

And you are making yourself look stupid

HeyTalkToMeGoose · 30/07/2024 21:50

Men + women = adults

What would you prefer op??

Seriously, this place is such a let down at times. Where is your respect??

The children's families are grieving....again, men women, boys and girls.....
