‘Children’ and ‘adults’ in Southport massacre

Supersimkin7 · 30/07/2024 20:43

All the papers are reporting that the Southport victims are ‘children’ who
were protected by ‘adults’.

The Southport victims are little girls who were protected by two women, now fighting for their lives.

No one needs to report what sex the killer is.

Male violence against women is a national emergency, say the police.

AIBU to think misgendering a massacre is the lowest of the low?

The OP’s point was that this was a man deliberately targeting women and girls. Male violence against women and girls is a massive and increasing problem. Calling the victims adults and children, rather than women and girls, obscures that fact.
This is not a trivial point.

How many times? THE MEDIA DIDN'T KNOW, OR WEREN'T YET ABLE TO REPORT, WHO THE VICTIMS WERE.

This was not some conspiracy to hide misogyny. This was respecting the privacy and the identity of the victims until their families were ready for the names to be reported.

CountryMumof4 · 30/07/2024 23:31

I see the point you're making to a certain degree and it does seem clear that in this instance women and female children were targeted. However, news reporters are reporting as and when they get updates themselves - including the identities of the poor girls that have lost their lives and the women who were injured trying to protect them. They've also reported about others who tried to help, both men and women. This is a dreadful tragedy, which I'm quite sure has been felt across the country. While news is still unfolding and children are still critically ill, surely the focus has to be on those affected, and ensuring that they and anyone else involved are supported.

Crikeyalmighty · 30/07/2024 23:30

@Supersimkin7 I think lowest of the low is the murderer and the far right bovver boys there tonight- not a bit of obtuse 'misgendering' - designed to protect IDS -

Supersimkin7 · 30/07/2024 23:17

Absolutely - and a neighbour got ten girls to safety. Both blokes.

Not all men…

So it's 'not all men' now

Backtracking....thread didn't go the way op wanted

Who was misgendered??

AIBU to think misgendering a massacre is the lowest of the low?

Well no, that'd be what the EDL thugs are doing.Sad

But if it was an attack on any other group that information would be seen as important. If Jewish people or gay men or black people had been targeted by a man on a rampage then the identity of the victims would be seen as salient. The media wouldn't just report it as a group of 'people' being attacked, they would be more specific. This man sought out young girls to kill. Most stranger murders of women and girls aren't carried out by someone looking for a 'person' to kill, they are carried out by someone hunting for a female.

Yep this is exactly so

When is the right time to raise the issue of male violence and violence against women and girls?

OP wasn't raising the issue of male violence. She was complaining about the media not referring to the victims as women and girls. Which was entirely unreasonable as the media wasn't (and still isn't) in a position to know or report the sexes of the victims in hospital.

Frazzledmummy123 · 30/07/2024 23:16

Christ on a bike! Please stop right now about misgendering and misogyny about an event where young children were killed. They were attacked because the guy was a nutter, end of!

SaintHonoria · 30/07/2024 23:14

Brave and selfless man.

Businessman Jonathan Hayes was among those who tried to intervene. He was stabbed in the leg as he tried to disarm the knifeman after running to help when he heard the piercing screams from his office.

He could have sat in the safety of his office minding his business.

BogRollBOGOF · 30/07/2024 23:13

When is the right time to raise the issue of male violence and violence against women and girls?

Ignoring it doesn't seem to be stopping it.

Calling it an "isolated incident" doesn't stop it either.

This one was particularly brutal and senseless to civilised people- as was the recent Australian shopping centre murder rapage. But there's an endless catalogue of male violence- last week's murder of three women in Bushey. So many more targeted "domestic" murders barely make blips on local news. How many more families need to be destroyed before it's the right time to start identifying patterns and hopefully stop the plague of young violent men with no respect for human life, and especially those of women and children who they don't see as equals.

We can handwring and empathise about the horror that the victims and their familes are enduring, and make connections too.

AIBU to think misgendering a massacre is the lowest of the low?

Leaving aside that you don't know what misgendering means, if you honestly think that the media not reporting the sexes of the people in hospital is "the lowest of the low", I really don't know where to start arguing with you.

saraclara · 30/07/2024 22:46

RaisedEyebrows11 · 30/07/2024 22:00

The children have been named and photos released on all news sites

Only the children who died. We don't know who the children and adults in hospital are.

Mayhemmumma · 30/07/2024 22:37

I thought they were only not specifying because not all the victims/injured have been named.

(I agree that male violence towards women and girls is never strongly stood up against - this video albeit not from uk says it so well vm.tiktok.com/ZGebCW6FG/)

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 30/07/2024 22:34

But if it was an attack on any other group that information would be seen as important.

I agree. But OP is simply wrong to complain that the adults involved aren't being called women - men were also injured while attempting to help.

sixtyten · 30/07/2024 22:31

For crying out loud. This is a terrible and very recent tragedy. It's in very poor taste to use it as a debating point.

Polyp0 · 30/07/2024 22:27

When else would you point out that the media is nor reporting the misogyny other that when it happens?

Goodluckanddontfitup · 30/07/2024 22:24

People were killed and injured, we don’t know the motive, whether it was because they were female or not, not anyone’s place to speculate. The ‘lowest of the low’ as you like to say, is that people have been murdered, not perceived misgendering in news articles FFS.

mirrorlife · 30/07/2024 22:16

I completely agree with you, op. Those disagreeing remind me of NRA types who criticise people for “politicising” gun attacks.

khaa2091 · 30/07/2024 22:09

I made the mistake of watching the 6 o'clock news - Southport, Bushey, London, Epsom - all men killing women/families.
Those who intervened (male) are absolute heroes, and obviously this is not most men BUT I do think it suggests a problem.
