Controlling for being angry at DH using oven

Dh likes to eat healthily which means he never fries any food. Even the 1 cal spray is not acceptable. Fine.

But DH knows I’m very funny about the heat. Hate it and do very well to keep a cool house. I’m the person who goes around closing curtains, opening windows at the optimal time to keep things cool.

Just got off a work call to a sauna downstairs. DH has made himself a fry up (chicken sausages, egg, mushrooms, tomatoes). The kitchen is reading 26c - it was 22.5c when I looked at around 12 pm.

I told dh that this was really selfish behaviour. And now I’ve been called controlling.

You came in looking for support for your (really quite unpleasant) behaviour and have stood your ground relentlessly despite everybody saying you’re wrong. Give yourself a shake, shrug your shoulders and try to be a bit more normal. I actually feel quite sorry for your Dh.

I live in England. It is perfectly mild enough for my dogs except for a handful of days a year. And I do very well to keep them cool on unseasonably hot days.

They are both rescues. Don’t be ridiculous

I have double costed dogs and I don’t put ice towels on them. You are very odd OP. And your behaviour is very controlling. Look at the poll to see how many people disagree with your approach. Oh and I’m currently in the south of France and it’s 40 degrees here. Mid twenties is nothing to worry about.

meatyryvita · 30/07/2024 15:10

OP, I think you need a Magnum and a cool drink.

Contraryjane · 30/07/2024 15:09

Move up North.

tinkertailorsoldierpie · 30/07/2024 14:24

OP once she's got the temperature just right.

I doubt he's allowed to open the fridge or run the cold tap in the winter in case it makes the house too cold 🙄

Doneit555 · 30/07/2024 15:08

i can’t believe your husband won’t use 1 cal
spray oil and uses the oven without your permission honestly OP you can’t live like this anymore he sounds so toxic

Epidote · 30/07/2024 15:07

Get an air fryer.

EllyGi · 30/07/2024 15:06

I'm I the minority. We also avoid using the oven in hot days for the same reason as you so I would be annoyed if anyone bakes something in the heat, it makes the temp in the house unbearable.

orchardgirl4 · 30/07/2024 15:06

You are being controlling, and you're ignoring the people telling you this. You're trying to control the narrative and justify why you are right instead of listening. Stop checking the temperature. Delete the app/remove the thermometer until you're able to stop your obsessive, controlling behaviour.

KreedKafer · 30/07/2024 14:40

@Bluebirdover Maybe a nice hot beef stew and dumplings, followed by steamed pudding and custard.

Boeuf bourguignon. Only takes a few hours in the oven.

And maybe a nice baked cheesecake?

GiddyNavyJoker · 30/07/2024 15:05

Lol. Your poor husband. You sound very controlling. I find it funny that you've ignored each comment and not accepted you're being both controlling and unreasonable.

Pookerrod · 30/07/2024 15:04

SharpOliveHam · 30/07/2024 13:40

We have an extra wide range and the kitchen is sweltering now.

So don’t go in there then and keep the kitchen door closed to the rest of the house? My kitchen is very warm right now as the huge windows face the sun and I don’t have window shutters in there like I do the rest of the house. I just don’t go in there other than to grab something. It’s really not that difficult.

GoingDownLikeBHS · 30/07/2024 15:04

OP are you trying to say that if he'd done that lot in a frying pan it would have been better than using the oven? You say it's a range cooker - is it throwing out the same sort of heat as an Aga? And having it on for 40 minutes seems a lot. I can see why it might be irksome, but yeah you can't prevent him using the oven or stove top.

My ex-H was the opposite, and cooked copious amounts of bacon in half a pint of oil every morning, on a very high heat so it spits everywhere, and all our surfaces and appliances like kettle and toaster covered in thick oil, it used to drip from the cooker hood into the pans on the hob if you were boiling an egg or something later in the day. He said it wasn't his fault and refused to clean it up. I'd come down and find the work-surfaces shimmering with oil. Nauseating. Reader, I divorced him. Obvs there were other reasons but ...

So I do have some sympathy, but as others have said is this the only thing he does or are there wider issues in the marriage?

pigsDOfly · 30/07/2024 15:03

I know, but I'm double coated. So I can't get too overheated, otherwise this strange angry lady appears out of nowhere and pelts me with frozen towels.

😂😂

My dog is also double coated and it's 27.5 in my living room, despite the fact that the blinds and curtains are drawn against the heat - the sun blazes on the large glass windows and doors that make up the back of the room so it's always hot on a sunny day.

She, dog, has spent most of the day upstairs where it's cooler but she's now happily asleep on the sofa in the living room.

Can't imagine how pissed off she'd be if I were to suddenly start throwing freezing cold towels at her.

whereisthelifethatirecognize · 30/07/2024 15:02

THen shut off the kitchen. Shut the doors. USe the rest of the house and only pop in there when you need things.

Gross over-reaction, OP. Very controlling and unreasonable.

Hankunamatata · 30/07/2024 15:01

Ffs weird and controlling

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 30/07/2024 15:01

@SharpOliveHam ye gods!!! you really need to get a life!!!! more in life to worry about than a couple of degrees of heat in a house after making some food!!

Homesweethome23 · 30/07/2024 15:00

Step 1 - close the kitchen door until it cools down again.

Step 2 - seek help for your behaviour.

Growlybear83 · 30/07/2024 15:00

You're being ridiculous. it's your husband's home too. It's not as if 26 degrees is particularly hot anyway but I think the heat has clearly got to you.

Maybelater434 · 30/07/2024 15:00

You do sound unreasonable & a bit controlling. Suggest an air fryer if u can’t bear to “allow” him to use the oven. Invest in a small air con unit if u find your house so unbearable.

Your current method sounds high maintenance & stressful for everyone & your DH can’t even make himself what he wants to eat without a total over reaction from you.
You can shave a double coated dog (many people do). You just chose not to. Thats your decision & perfectly fine. Frozen or wet towels totally ineffective to cool them though. (Try putting your own biggest, thickest, waterproof winter coat on then drape a frozen towel round your shoulders… you won’t find it cooler, just an extra layer to trap the heat in) Fill the paddling pool at start of heatwave & leave out until weather changes. Put dogs in there a few times a day, make sure they are soaked thru to skin for effective cooling.
Give your poor DH a break.

Mrsdyna · 30/07/2024 14:59

This is crazy. I thought you were going to say that you lived in a hot country. Of course you're being unreasonable. He got off work and made himself dinner. Leave him alone.

DurhamDurham · 30/07/2024 14:59

To be fair if your dogs overheat that much they need a paddling pool to cool down then they were going to need it whether your husband had a fry up or not.

The house temp didn't increase by 4 degrees becuse of one fry up, it's heating up because that's what happens when the sun is shining all day long.

You are very unreasonable.

justfornow1 · 30/07/2024 14:57

Still arguing with everyone op?

99% think YABU.

masomenos · 30/07/2024 14:56

I don't think you have what it takes to live with a human.

Or maybe you're just hot and bothered.

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 30/07/2024 14:55

blueberryforest · 30/07/2024 14:47

I would let the 'controlling' complaint roll off my back. So what? I might be a bit controlling about what goes on in my own home, but requesting someone not to use the oven at the hottest time of a hot day isn't the crime of the century.

For the future, I'd discuss ways to compromise. Needing to eat does not mean needing to heat an oven every time. There are smaller appliances that heat things without frying or using a full-size oven. There are also many things that can be made in advance or don't require baking or frying.

Isn’t it HIS own home too, though, @blueberryforest?
