Controlling for being angry at DH using oven

DH has had a shower and added to the moisture in the atmosphere, the thoughtless BASTARD! I'm running around after my quadruple-coated dogs with hairdryers!

I hate being too hot, once I overheat, it takes me a long time to cool down and I feel unwell. My OH is cold all of the time.

I would sleep with the windows open and the fan on all year around. I don't because my OH could not sleep in those conditions. We compromise, use common sense and think of other people. Unlike the Ops DH who sounds selfish and irritating.

The complaint today will be that's it's raining and that will cause other issues. 🙄

Building design isn't just influenced by climate but by available materials and economics. Eg, in the US most houses are built of timber rather than brick. Timber is cheap and abundant in the US whereas here in the UK we chopped down most of our trees centuries ago so we use brick instead.

Why would you pull down perfectly ok houses? UK. Houses are built for the climate. E.g. if you go to the far north, to the Shetlands and Orkneys, which experience winds of 200 mph on occasion, houses are low built with shallow pitches to the roofs. In the south, warm and with equable climate, houses used to be built to keep heat in during winter and cold in during summer, e.g. thick walls, or overhanging roofs. Why were these methods not exported to the New World?

You are being unreasonable. He should be able to cook and eat how and when he wants, he isn't in prison. Maybe make a suggestion to mitigate the heat output in future since it has been so hot this week. Cool mats for the dogs. It has been super hot but you can't control how someone cooks their food, I was expecting it to read annoyed he used an oven that's broken or something.

We all get a little peeved sometimes at things that we think is insane/not right, especially when it's hot, so don't best yourself up about the comments to follow from the post 😅 Just apologise if you've already had a go!

That's not really a true blanket statement for Australia for the States and areas that were settled and populated earlier, which is where the majority of people live. While it’s true for a lot of housing QLD and NT (they seemed to have sense from the get go), for the rest of us housing was/is completely unsuited to our climate with houses with zero insulation that are freezing in winter and boiling in Summer. Yes, most are now fitted with air con to cater to summer/winter (with the sky high electric bills to match) but it would be rare for anyone to put the air con on at 26 in a house with trapped heat, not designed for any cross-flow of ventilation etc, because it’s just not that hot.

However, not sure when, I’m thinking early 90’s (??) most States/Territories implemented building codes so that we wouldn’t continue with unsuitable housing design/builds unfit for climate. Any from that time onwards have been designed/built with climate in mind per mandatory requirements and I think they are what you are talking about (unless you are talking about the old QLD’er style which predated these modern requirements but were the original builds in areas up north with much sparser population densities). The reality though is that most of the population in the majority of States in established housing are still in the ‘older’ homes and it’s likely to be two generations on before we see most of these replaced with suitable new builds.

You are absolutely ridiculous. I hate the heat as it makes me unwell but this is just crazy. It has to be a windup. No one can be like this in real life and if they are I guarantee soon you won’t have to worry as he won’t be living with you to cause any added heat.

If my DH tried to tell me when I'm allowed to use the oven I'd tell him to fuck off.

26 degrees is not an especially unusual summer temperature in the South East of the UK, especially London.

To me that is - great lovely weather for drying clothes and a beer garden trip rather than OMG everyone is going to die of hot.

It's peak mumsnet when the OP complains about the temperature of her house because DH did some cooking, and now she has to burn all of the tea towels.

My house is pretty good in the winter, so I can be quite sparing with my heating. In the summer it is 🌞🔥But it's only a few days a year and we try and enjoy time outside whilst we can!

It also depends on your house; and on the level of humidity.

I think your perspective might be different if you grew up in a hot country. I have a friend living near me who grew up in Egypt. She's in her fifth year in the UK and when I saw her yesterday she was in jeans and a jumper as it didn't feel that warm to her. Whereas her idea of what a cold day is, is very different to mine!

@LaughingElderberry Another Aussie here, saying (as before) 26 is just not hot no matter what you are used to. Even Santa copes with brief sojourns involving heat 🤣. Seriously, I lived for years working in the UK, and you are not exactly a bunch of complete arctic dwellers who can’t cope with this weather. I was also in a position that dealt with the fallout of heatwaves there, so understand the inexperience with ‘heat’ but that was usually vulnerable elderly AND much hotter than 26. What the OP describes is a level of odd.

And, as before, OP seems to have no idea of dogs/coats as here we leave double coated dogs as is in hot weather given the double coat acts as an insulator to keep out the heat in hot weather, and keep in the heat in cold weather. So we neither clip them as we do single coats, or smother them with ice towels etc🥴.

My kitchen today is hotter than my living room....not because I've cooked, I don't have doors so it's open to the living room....but because it's the side of the house that has had sun on since early morning so despite the blinds it's warmed up. My front room part ..if effectively the same open space is lovely and cool.

To be fair, 26 degrees is not usual for the UK. We only have a few days each year that come up to this kind of temperature - and our houses and infrastructure are built to retain heat, rather than disperse it. I can understand how it feels daft from an Aus perspective but we're not used to it!!
