To have allowed my dc watch the Olympic opening ceremony?

I was shocked at the library scene leading to a threesome.

The mocking of Christians in the last supper scene.

The feminization of males & the sheer number of transvestites on parade. And a child thrown in the midst of them.

This is a sporting event, why the need to have it so highly sexulaised? My dc were thankfully howling with laughter at parts "the smurf man" singing (complete with his painted bulge) had us all in stitches.

I feel there was a social conditioning agenda to the opening ceremony & it was completely inappropriate given that it is for family viewing. Sexulaised behaviour should not be displayed to children.

Only just read about this today. I didn't watch the opening ceremony. Its a disgrace if they intentionally mocked Christianity. It's an easy target. Anyway they have apologised. Hmm.

Lancrelady80 · 31/07/2024 00:08

Felt like a three hour long episode of Eurotrash, with boats.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 30/07/2024 23:50

Why shouldn’t Christianity be invoked in a ceremony taking place in a generally Christian country ? But reformulated to acknowledge how times have changed ? How is this mocking ? If people have such unshakeable faith in their magic fairies then no need to take offence, right ? Turn the other cheek is it ?

I thought all the catwalk performers were beautiful - some stunning looks and incredible dancing (especially the ballet dancer). Really talented people whom it was a privilege to watch

Creepingivy · 29/07/2024 22:04

Personally I'm delighted they chose to ignorantly go down this route as the pushback will be a tsunami & rightly so! Bring it on!

Dionysys and Bacchus are the same God. It was a Bachanalia. He's the god of partying, and the the father of the goddess of the Seine. How else is it supposed to look?

Yes, I know they are the same god, it's why I said Roman version of him. However their mythology is somewhat different and Bacchus was the more extreme version. And a big party doesn't tend to look like a famous painting of a depiction of an important bible story.

As it had happened on Friday night, France tv tweeted that it was The Last Supper. And earlier today, in Iran, the foreign ministry has summoned the French ambassador to explain the insulting depiction of their Prophet Isa (Christian Jesus). The bearded drag queen on the right of the picture, red dress, blonde wig, called it a "biblical representation" in an interview with BFMTV. And the central figure in the halo said it was a "new gay testament" on an Instagram story.

There is absolutely no room for interpretation here. The depiction was clear to people all over the world, of all faiths and none. People won't be gaslit on this shit anymore.

[I couldn't post the picture of Donald Trump at a table surrounded by his minions.]

Is this mocking the Last Supper? How are people sitting at a table (or dancing beside a catwalk) supposed to look to avoid looking like the Last Supper?

It that was true there is no way they would have issued an apology to Christians which they did.... It absolutely was aimed at Christians & mocking women to boot. Double whammy.

They didn't apologise for mocking Christianity.

They said it was Dionysus during the event. His daughter is Sequana -the goddess of the Seine. Sequana is often depicted with a diadem or a crown. It wasn't mocking Christianity.

It fucking was mocking Christianity. They may have included Dionysus, but they represented him with attributes specific to the Roman version, Bacchus. While at the same time the supposed "Bacchanalia" was a clear mirror of Da Vinci's Last Supper. Only the wilfully ignorant or those lacking in knowledge of basic European art culture could deny it because it is clear as fucking day. And attempting to ridicule and gaslight those who see it (ie, almost everyone) will backfire enormously.

I can guarantee you that there are, for obvious example, people in the US who were on the fence about who to vote for that will tip to Trump because of this bullshit. This exact type of cultural shit led to fascism a century ago and if we don't cop the fuck on we'll go straight down the same road over the next couple of decades. (Not that I'm suggesting Trump is fascistic. But this shit will take us there if it doesn't stop.)

It's obviously not a stretch at all, @JohnSt1 , since a massive, massive amount of people world-wide, even the majority, saw it as such. The intent was obvious. Saying it was Dionysus, now, seems to much like hasty post re-writing because of the flack they rightfully got. It's just an excuse. And so many when told "oh, the blue figure is really the Greek God Dionysus" are saying "bullshit!" on social media. They're not buying it. And even if - big massive if - it were, surely someone must have known how it would look?

Nah. I, like most on social media, don't buy this attempt and face-saving by the organisers.

I fully agree that trans gender (if I have got the right term and I apologize if not) people should not compete in sports as their new sex. This is nothing to do with being anti-anything (which I am not), it is because a female who was born male has an unfair physical advantage. Whatever the most ardent feminist may say, pound for pound men are stronger than women and a sex change isn't going to change that. Particularly in a sport such as boxing it is likely that the sex-change athlete will have a longer reach and more powerful punch. Similarly in athletics men's times are faster than women's.

Instead of guidelines the IOC should have definite rules regarding anything of this sort. At the moment it is the decision of the individual sport's governing body.

Maybe there could be categories in the paralympics instead where people would compete against each other on a level playing field.

As for the child rapist there should be a limit on the amount of inclusiveness allowed in major (or minor) sporting events. Some people are given life bans for much less such as taking performance enhancing drugs where the only person affected is themselves. Cricketers have been given longer bans for ball-tampering than this man spent in prison for rape.

Creepingivy · 29/07/2024 10:11

@Ereshkigalangcleg feeling & biological reality are two different things🤣
I feel 25 most of the time but the biologal reality is I'm 45, nothing will change that no matter what I say or do to convince people otherwise. Thankfully I'm not dilussional.

I have known intersex people who explicitly said they felt outside the sex binary.

That's not the same as the sex binary not existing. People can feel a lot of things.

Lia Thomas has never even competed at an international level or Olympic trials. How does she seem relevant to a dance performance at opening ceremonies? Or address any of the points I’ve made?

Or do you just like to look at photos of trans people so much you can’t help yourself but bring up them up constantly?

*HE

It's a male with cock and balls.

Not a she.

I think it's a bit of a stretch to equate a depiction of the Greek god of partying to the Last Supper.

It was people dancing beside a fashion runway. They weren't even sitting at a table.

She should be ashamed that she has children that defend womens basic fucking human rights, @TheRakesTale ?!?? No, misogynist narrow-minded bigots with hateful anti-women attitudes like yours, @TheRakesTale , are the ones who should be ashamed! What happened to you to make you hate women so much, and not even think we are human deserving of fairness and human rights?

Intersex people might have different internal and external sex organs, they often do. So if they are assigned one way at birth, they may feel differently later on when they suddenly start having periods or growing facial hair because they have excess testosterone.

@Ereshkigalangcleg I’m not saying intersex people have anything to do with the trans community, but I’m trying to mention that there is biology outside a gender binary. Drag queens are also unrelated to trans people, but OP is mentioning trans people a lot.

I think people are capable of having subtle discussions about feminism and trans activism without it degenerating, but Mumsnet probably isn’t the best forum. I suppose I wanted to gently engage without being aggressive, as OP has referred repeatedly to a “woke agenda” and it’s a delicate subject.

I worry about child safeguarding frequently, as it comes up in my job. I also worry about violence against women and girls. I also worry for trans people and the rates of violence and suicide in their community. We can care about all these people without lobbing insults. Trans people aren’t trying to hurt you. They are mostly just trying to live their lives, see some people who look like them on tv, and pee in peace.

It concerns me that your job has you dealing with child safeguarding, yet you are ever so deeply ill-informed on what intersex and DSD is.

there is biology outside a gender binary

Gender isn't real. It's a man-made misogynistic social construct that relies on stereotypes. Only sex is real. Sex is immutable and it's binary. And actually, even setting aside the physical external differences - with chormosomal abnormalities, intersex or as is more favourable a term now - DSD (Differences of Sexual Development), prove and reinforce the binary nature of sex, as this graph below on DSD chromosomal abnormalities by a Biologist shows.

I also worry for trans people and the rates of violence and suicide in their community.

Trans people (particularly transwomen) have far more power and privilege than everyone else, especially women and girls. Statistical evidence shows they are the safest group out, and have the lowest level of violence, and that there suicide rates - despite suicide being pushed very heavily as a weapon to get parents to trans their children, are no higher than any other group. Unfortunately though if one don't push past all the hyperbole about trans and actually look for facts and evidence, one wouldn't be aware of this, as Suicide Ideation is pushed very heavily.

Trans people aren’t trying to hurt you.

Some aren't, that's true. There are some good, decent, grounded trans people that are aware of the reality of their situation. However, too many of them or the activists, go around threatening women with rape, with wire-covered baseball bats, with being knived and bashed, even burned to death (a plot to burn down a building with women meeting inside for a Let Women Speak rally was exposed on twitter, with police then being tagged in). At no stage in history have women been more at risk of violence and abuse. Just for speaking out about our basic human rights and needs.

and pee in peace

If all they want is to pee in peace (which is what WOMEN AND GIRLS WANT, too), they can pee in peace in their sex-based facilities that match their sex. It really is that simple.

Ah no! My daughters will never accept males infiltrating their girls only spaces & sports. Many young children can actually spot the emperor you know & will not accept it. My children know there are two sexes & this will never change regardless of how many men try to claim they are female. I am very proud to be raising GC children rather than sheep who are told what to think under the guise of "be kind" & "no debate"!

Don’t have the energy to argue all the finer points. Brought up the rapist because I think he deserves our attention and there was an implication the drag artists were being inappropriate as there was a child onstage.

I have known intersex people who explicitly said they felt outside the sex binary. I realise they don’t speak for all intersex people! But I’m trying to listen to people with lived experience.

People can have whatever opinions they want, but I’ve only tried to engage people positively on this thread and some posters are so filled with rage and bile. OP has been open to discussions. This whole thing has left me feeling pretty low, honestly. I can see how activists end up advocating for no platforming, which I think is largely counterproductive, out of sheer exhaustion. I have tried to “correct the internet” before, and that way madness lies.

They wanted to see who the masked parkour person was which was never unveiled 🤣
Thankfully they found the transvestites & Smurf guy hilarious. DH & I explained they were not to be taken seriously. Happy to say I have GC children who will never accept males moonlighting as females!
