Watching the opening ceremony. AIBU in finding it boringly grim. Especially when compared to London 2012.

Oh the horse is still running

YouSayChorizoIsayChorizo · 26/07/2024 21:25

Genius tip from someone in the Guardian comments: imagine the commentary is being spoken by Alan Partridge. Makes remarks like 'Peru - home of Paddington' insanely funny, instead of mildly tooth-gritting.

I bought the DVD too! It was exceptional, unlike this!

This is absolutely exceptional. Exceptionally shite.

We actually bought the opening ceremony for 2012 on dvd. Watched it again in the depths of lockdown really cheered us up

I quite like the horse but the clips of older openings look way better

Seaglassandchampagne · 26/07/2024 21:21

Powerfully shite.

NotSentFromIphone · 26/07/2024 21:20

Omg, please sink the horse.

The mechanical horse looks good. It seems to have gone all dark, gloomy and dystopian

Yes- would have been good but WAY too long

TFMinx · 26/07/2024 21:18

This is the first Olympics my son is old enough to watch. I've been telling him all about previous opening ceremonies, particularly London, and how exciting they are; he's been bitterly disappointed and so have I.
I also feel sorry for the flag bearers, usually it's such an honour to carry the flag, but this time they're being obscured by the country name or lost in the crowd.
The whole thing feels dull.

FairviewRosie24 · 26/07/2024 21:18

Danny did it so well. This all seems a bit random.

We have been discussing that seems a bit unnecessary

DH kept saying “do you think it’s supposed to be on fire?” 😂😂😂😂

Createausername1970 · 26/07/2024 21:17

I walked the dog as I got bored.

Why is there a horse going down the seine?

EasternStandard · 26/07/2024 21:15

HemelHan · 26/07/2024 21:13

but why is the piano on fire?

We have been discussing that seems a bit unnecessary

OhshutupRoger · 26/07/2024 21:14

Why have they got men dressed up as women dancing? What a pile of shit. Turned it off 💤

SleepQuest33 · 26/07/2024 21:14

I think it was a lovely original idea to use the Seine but hasn’t really worked for me.

Also, what on earth was the story setup in the library that ended up in a threesom! Closing the bedroom door with a wink? What the hec! Not suitable in my opinion.

shame about the rain, I actually think the night time has improved the show.

goingdownfighting · 26/07/2024 21:14

Ooo I like this. Bit it's all so random

HemelHan · 26/07/2024 21:13

but why is the piano on fire?

FairviewRosie24 · 26/07/2024 21:13

I was thinking that 😊

TheLeadbetterLife · 26/07/2024 21:13

The genius of what Danny Boyle did was to tell unexpected stories - who would have bet on the Industrial Revolution and the NHS as the focal points - as well as having the immense skill required to tell those stories effectively on a stadium scale for a global audience. The delicate balance of humour and spectacle, the production values and behind-the-scenes expertise (I doubt any other nation has the skills base), and the pace of each element over the evening was perfect. It will never be bettered, the 2012 opening ceremony is truly a masterpiece.

And we’ve still got Celine 😴

She’s Canadian though? French Canadian, but still

Starlingexpress · 26/07/2024 21:12

Kinda hoping this boat goes down in flames….

iamtheblcksheep · 26/07/2024 21:12

John Lennon. Interesting choice for a country that supposedly hates everything the uk has ever done.

Alicewinn · 26/07/2024 21:11

The drone shots look good, I guess it’s designed for TV only
