Friend had a go at me over a can of Diet Coke

Last Saturday friend had a few people around, she lives in the country so taxi/uber is impossible so all those drinking stayed over.

In the morning there was still some stuff out from the night before, including cans of Diet Coke, I opened one and had a sip, put it down not really thinking and said my goodbyes, my friend said “aren’t you taking that with you?” I responded “no I’m good thanks” and she retorted “what I’m absolute waste” - awkward silence, I grabbed the can, mumbled sorry and left.

Shes now messaged me to apologised. I’m just so annoyed that she spoke to me like a child.

I'd have made a comment too (but wouldn't have apologised after!)

betterangels · 26/07/2024 14:37

She's right, though. I wouldn't have apologised.

PerfectTravelTote · 26/07/2024 14:36

She has apologised. Move on.

It makes life so much harder if you hang on to trivial annoyances.

peachgreen · 26/07/2024 14:36

This must be a reverse, surely?

Beth216 · 26/07/2024 14:36

I think it was very good of her to apologise, she obviously realised it wasn't worth falling out over and is being the bigger person. She was annoyed because you were annoying - now you need to act like a grown up and apologise for your behaviour.

ChubSeedsYorkie · 26/07/2024 14:35

I’m with your friend on this.

It was wasteful and then to just leave it there presumably for her to clear up as well it a bit off.

VictoriaEra · 26/07/2024 14:34

Oh my goodness, my children do that. I am teaching them otherwise because it is an absolute waste. Your friend is correct. It is an expensive thoughtless waste.

PointsSouth · 26/07/2024 14:34

....I think that this might be a rare, or possibly unique, instance of every single person on the thread telling the OP that she's in the wrong.

And now someone will tell her she's the victim, just to break the run. Damn.

blueberryforest · 26/07/2024 14:33

I'd have been very annoyed. I might not have said anything to avoid a scene, but I'd have wondered why you did that.

Skyrainlight · 26/07/2024 14:33

Wow, your behaviour was bad and wasteful. Who does that? Takes one sip and leaves the can.

MonsteraMama · 26/07/2024 14:32

She spoke to you like a child because you acted like one, my 16yo has better manners than you.

She's had the grace to apologise for her tone, which I don't think she should have. Get over it now, it's stupid to still be angry about a situation caused entirely by you.

TinkerTiger · 26/07/2024 14:32

Even worse I've had a 'friend' come to stay and leave things behind that she didn't want anymore. One was a book. I asked her if she thinks I'm a dumping ground. Haven't had her round since.

Rickrolypoly · 26/07/2024 14:30

She's probably sick of you doing shit like this.

TinkerTiger · 26/07/2024 14:30

Ummmmm YABU

TarantinoIsAMisogynist · 26/07/2024 14:30

It was a waste, she was right.

rumblegrumble · 26/07/2024 14:30

Your friend is extremely unreasonable for apologising.

mrlistersgelfbride · 26/07/2024 14:28

Sorry YABU. If you were going to open a fresh can of coke as you were thirsty, you could have at least taken it with you when you left, otherwise why not just have a sip of water?
It's wasteful.

Prinnny · 26/07/2024 14:28

Not sure why she apologised as she was completely in the right! To open a can of pop, have a sip and leave it there is so wasteful and rude to the host!

Dozycuntlaters · 26/07/2024 14:26

I am constantly telling my son not to open a can of drink, take a few sips and then leave it. So wasteful. However, if a friend did it I would grumble inwardly to myself but not say anything. Your friend is right though, it is wasteful and also pretty disrespectful. Why open it for one sip, thats just so entitled.

TinyYellow · 26/07/2024 14:26

It was rude of you to open a can, take one sip, and then leave it lying about for someone else to clear up, so it was fair enough for your friend to call you out on it.

Mercurial123 · 26/07/2024 14:25

If anyone should be annoyed, it's your friend. Are you always so wasteful or just with other people's stuff?

Lowerechelons · 26/07/2024 14:24

She was in the process of cleaning up after offering you hospitality and you didn't even tidy your rubbish away?

Fifiesta · 26/07/2024 14:24

You behaved badly, own it, learn from it and move on…

Everyoneesleistheproblem · 26/07/2024 14:23

Agree with everyone else.
Particularly if she lives in the middle of nowhere. You really appreciate the waste when you can't just nip out to grab a drink.
Its pretty rude to leave it in the mess also. Anyone that stays over normally helps clear up in the morning not add to it.

YesThatsATurdOnTheRug · 26/07/2024 14:23

You should apologise, I can't believe you haven't, 'sorry I was hung over and not thinking'.

She's had the grace to apologise even though she was in the right - 'like a child' because it's a childish thing to do and if a kid did it you'd tell them off so why is it fine for you to do it?
