Friend had a go at me over a can of Diet Coke

Last Saturday friend had a few people around, she lives in the country so taxi/uber is impossible so all those drinking stayed over.

In the morning there was still some stuff out from the night before, including cans of Diet Coke, I opened one and had a sip, put it down not really thinking and said my goodbyes, my friend said “aren’t you taking that with you?” I responded “no I’m good thanks” and she retorted “what I’m absolute waste” - awkward silence, I grabbed the can, mumbled sorry and left.

Shes now messaged me to apologised. I’m just so annoyed that she spoke to me like a child.

Sorry YABU. That would really annoy me. Petty, maybe, but what a waste. If you just need a sip then have some water. Rude to open an unresealable container and waste 90% of the contents.

LuckySantangelo35 · 26/07/2024 15:25

Why did you open it if you didn’t want to drink it Op? @coldayscientist

Scorchio84 · 26/07/2024 15:25

Oh my christ! a can opened is a "waste" if the person drinks it in it's enterity or not, I can't imagine hosting people with this mentality

ItsAlrightDarling · 26/07/2024 15:24

Wishimaywishimight · 26/07/2024 14:15

How is it a waste? Surely she could have poured the remainder into a glass?

And then done what with it? You’re assuming she wanted to drink a can of Coke at that time, surely?

RLouiseH · 26/07/2024 15:24

It’s the “no I’m good thanks” that gets me. It screams “no I’m not, so you need to tidy up my mess.” In that moment, after she asked if you were taking it with you, did that not trigger something in you to think ‘Ah I need to dispose of this.’ The fact you think she is in the wrong is mind blowing.

She treated you like a child cause you acted like one, such disrespectful behaviour in someone’s home.

Zone2NorthLondon · 26/07/2024 15:24

It’s really wasteful, open a can for one sip and don’t take it with you. Bluntly put but correct. Friend shouldn’t have apologised either

Why would I ask? It was leftover on the buffet. If you go to a buffet or bbq etc and the host lays out food and drink on the table for guests do you ask every single time if it’s ok to have something?

That's your only response? After over one hundred replies.

Exactly what I was going to say 😂

What after op had had her mouth around the can and drank from it? Would you normally think it’s acceptable to eat or drink someone else’s left overs?

Naunet · 26/07/2024 15:22

You sound like a brat. Time to grow up Op, you don’t have a god given right to waste other peoples money.

Butchyrestingface · 26/07/2024 15:21

97% of responders think you're in the wrong, @coldayscientist. Assuming this isn't a reverse, how do you feel now? Grin

CautiousLurker · 26/07/2024 15:20

No idea why she apologised. Totally agree with her. If you only wanted a sip of something wet, you should have had some tap water.

OkPedro · 26/07/2024 15:05

This thread is insane 😆 the op didn't harm anyone FFS

No, but she was rude and had no regard for waste.

Happiestwhen · 26/07/2024 15:19

This is a pet peev of mine as my younger sister does this all the time. Every day there'll be an almost full can lying somewhere.
Easy to know it's not her paying for it, dm has started buying the smaller , tiny cans because of it. So yes you were wrong and hopefully you'll learn from this!!

IMustDoMoreExercise · 26/07/2024 15:19

Why on earth would you open a can of coke to have one sip?

Hellskitchen24 · 26/07/2024 15:18

You sound like a spoilt brat. I’d be calling you up on this too. Embarrassing (from you).

She hosted you the night before. It is her food and drink in her house. So if you wanted something the next day you need to ask first. You especially don’t waste her money having one sip and leaving it. It’s a question of entitlement vs respect.

I cannot believe I’m explaining this to an adult.

somewhatmiffed · 26/07/2024 15:17

How rude. I'd be pretty pissed off if you had one sip of a drink then dumped it. I would have been waiting for an apology

Easipeelerie · 26/07/2024 15:17

She was probably wound up that the house was a bit of a tip and people hadn’t really pulled their weight at the end of the night, so this was the straw that broke the camel’s back.

It wasn't the buffet anymore, though. It was the next day. Yes, I would have asked if it was OK , except I wouldn't have asked at all if I was only going to have one sip. You sound really, really rude.

Homesweethome23 · 26/07/2024 15:16

She never spoke to you like a child she commented it was a waste…which it was.

It doesn’t matter if it was left over from the previous night it wasn’t opened and could have been saved for later or another event rather then just opening it for one sip! You could have grabbed a glass of water if you were dry. I wouldn’t be impressed as your friend either.

Focussing on the one thing she can defend.

LordPercyPercy · 26/07/2024 15:16

OP I don't think I'd enjoy being friends with you. You're ill mannered.

Blibbleflibble · 26/07/2024 15:16

Yeah I'm with your friend, maybe she shouldn't have blurted out that harshly but she apologised so no harm.

But you did do something super wasteful and rude so I would have found it hard to keep a lid on it either and probably done the same as your mate then probably texted you after apologising since sometimes I drop my filter too. 😅

If I was you though I'd probably text your mate and be like "no worries, sorry for just taking a sip and leaving it, I wasn't thinking" and then all will be right with the world and everyone doesn't have to hold onto any lasting resentment over a diet coke.

I simply cannot believe you are sharing this utter triviality on mumsnet.
Get over it
