Friend had a go at me over a can of Diet Coke

Last Saturday friend had a few people around, she lives in the country so taxi/uber is impossible so all those drinking stayed over.

In the morning there was still some stuff out from the night before, including cans of Diet Coke, I opened one and had a sip, put it down not really thinking and said my goodbyes, my friend said “aren’t you taking that with you?” I responded “no I’m good thanks” and she retorted “what I’m absolute waste” - awkward silence, I grabbed the can, mumbled sorry and left.

Shes now messaged me to apologised. I’m just so annoyed that she spoke to me like a child.

Act like a child, get spoken to like a child 🤷🏻‍♀️

I wouldn't be apologising to you OP it was a really rude thing to do

TartanJambo · 26/07/2024 15:37

Your friend was in the right

smallchange · 26/07/2024 15:36

Impressive op. How on earth have you managed to make yourself the offended against one here?

It's a tiny thing, and while I would personally just have been a bit pissed off at you silently, it's an enormous reach for you now to decide your friend has unreasonably "had a go at you" and for you not to just apologise back and let it lie. Like a normal person would do.

Did she snap by chance because you sail through life continually doing these tiny thoughtless things? You'll probably not be able to answer that as it'll not be on your radar. Do you ever get asked back to stay for a second time?

Twistybranch · 26/07/2024 15:36

I bet you’re a double dipper at the buffet too aren’t you OP

SagittariusDwarf · 26/07/2024 15:35

You're still stewing about this after a week? Your behaviour sounds bratty and immature.

Why would I ask? It was leftover on the buffet. If you go to a buffet or bbq etc and the host lays out food and drink on the table for guests do you ask every single time if it’s ok to have something?

Thanks for elucidating on the type of person you are.

BluePeterNot · 26/07/2024 15:34

She spoke to you like a child because frankly you acted like one.
That type of thoughtless wasteful behaviour is very child like. A young child too.

GoFigure235 · 26/07/2024 15:34

I can see her point.

Do you pick several sandwiches, take a single bite out of each one and then walk off and leave them?

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 26/07/2024 15:33

To add I would have had no problem with you having a left over can; it’s the opening to just have one sip and then leave it that is rude.

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 26/07/2024 15:31

I don’t think I would have said anything to you but I would have thought you very wasteful and found it quite rude. If you only wanted a sip, could you have at least poured some into a glass so someone else could finish it.

That's your only response? After over one hundred replies.

OP you're not covering yourself in glory here

givemushypeasachance · 26/07/2024 15:30

It's the equivalent of you have a cheese and wine type party, the host laid on lots of nice cheese, and the next day you take an unopened brie, bite off the nose then leave it. That's no longer a full and wrapped brie that can be given to someone or enjoyed by the host another time. It's now part of the 'wastage' of the party and it's not even like anyone actually got to eat and enjoy it.

Strictlymad · 26/07/2024 15:29

She spoke as she did because you were very rude, such a waste to have a sip from a can and no more!

SoreAndTired1 · 26/07/2024 15:29

That is very wasteful and thoughtless. You took a sip from the can itself, so one else could have drank from it, so the whole thing would have been tipped out. Why bother in the first place taking one sip? Why couldn't you have taken the can with you?

Cantrushart · 26/07/2024 15:28

I have a vision of someone walking past a buffet on their way out poking a finger in every remaining cake and licking the sausage rolls.

1987qwerty · 26/07/2024 15:28

Something only a complete twat would do.

ThePoshUns · 26/07/2024 15:28

I agree with your friend, that is such a waste. However she's apologised, get over it.

littlebopeepp234 · 26/07/2024 15:27

I’m baffled. Why would someone open a full can just to take one sip out of it and then leave it. Surely if you’re not thirsty then why would you open the can just for the sake of one sip. Do you like the taste of it that much you just needed a fix op?

Im even more baffled why you think it’s ok to just help yourself to it in the first place, open it, take one sip out of it and then dump it as garbage for your friend to clean up in her own house? Yes it was a waste, bad manners and not how I would behave if I was at someone else’s house.

Hankunamatata · 26/07/2024 15:27

Would you buy a can, take one sip and dump it - no. So why have such bad manners at friends house.

RunnerDown · 26/07/2024 15:27

A member of my family used to do this all the time. I never said anything but it was incredibly annoying . Very entitled way to behave

Miyagi99 · 26/07/2024 15:25

You could have at least emptied it down the sink and put it in the recycling but yes, it is a waste. I probably would have glugged it and spent the taxi ride windy and needing a piss just to be polite tbh.

RenegadeMasterx · 26/07/2024 15:25

To be honest that was a bit silly, to only have a sip with no intentions of finishing the can, I probably would've been pissed off with that aswell 😕

LuckySantangelo35 · 26/07/2024 15:25

littlebopeepp234 · 26/07/2024 15:23

What after op had had her mouth around the can and drank from it? Would you normally think it’s acceptable to eat or drink someone else’s left overs?

@Wishimaywishimight

yeah I don’t eat and drink things that have had other peoples gobs on them.

Just tell us it's a reverse so we can all go about our day...
