Friend had a go at me over a can of Diet Coke

Last Saturday friend had a few people around, she lives in the country so taxi/uber is impossible so all those drinking stayed over.

In the morning there was still some stuff out from the night before, including cans of Diet Coke, I opened one and had a sip, put it down not really thinking and said my goodbyes, my friend said “aren’t you taking that with you?” I responded “no I’m good thanks” and she retorted “what I’m absolute waste” - awkward silence, I grabbed the can, mumbled sorry and left.

Shes now messaged me to apologised. I’m just so annoyed that she spoke to me like a child.

How rude to open her can for one sip and then leave it there, wasted. I'd be annoyed too. Just don't waste other people's money in future.

Is this a reverse? You left a random full can of coke out ready to get knocked over? It’s like a toddler taking one bite of a banana and leaving it on the side.

Except a toddler is still learning and has no concept of waste.

Are you a srot of person that comes up to a buffet, bites into a bitd of food and puts the rest on the counter for others to clean up?

BippityBopper · 26/07/2024 15:53

I don't see that as her having a go at you and, as many others have said, that is a waste.

Also, she apologised so you definitely move on as you're actually the one who was more in the wrong. I would've responded saying that you hadn't considered the waste at the time, but she was right and then thank her for the apology.

I missed this in your OP the first time I read it, @coldayscientist - and even before I clocked it, I thought your behaviour was pretty thoughtless, UHT this makes it downright rude. Your friend was absolutely correct - opening the can just for ONE sip was wasteful, and she had every right to comment, especially as you then dumped the nearly full can for her to clear up whilst you swanned off home!

MultiplaLight · 26/07/2024 15:51

One sip is very wasteful, your friend was correct.

tigger1001 · 26/07/2024 15:51

I have to say I agree with her.

Were you just going to leave the opened almost full can for her to deal with?

Its bad enough, but what she signed up for, that drunk people leave a mess to be cleaned up. But you weren't drunk. And thought nothing of adding to her tidy up by going to leave an almost full can of juice.

Both wasteful and ignorant. I certainly wouldn't have been apologising to you - the apology should have been from you to her.

What a non event.

Why would I ask? It was leftover on the buffet. If you go to a buffet or bbq etc and the host lays out food and drink on the table for guests do you ask every single time if it’s ok to have something?

No, but nor do I take one bite of it and then put it back.

Which is what you did.

peerie · 26/07/2024 15:50

Can you really not see her point of view?

Persiancouscous · 26/07/2024 15:47

She was correct, only because its leftover doesn't mean you can be so wasteful, it's not like she was going to throw the can in the bin unopened.

alwaysmovingforwards · 26/07/2024 15:45

Well it was a small act, but the fact you did it and you’re struggling to understand your friends reaction actually speaks volumes about your sense of entitlement and lack of self awareness.

At least this thread is giving you an insight into the sort of person you are and a sense of what’s said about you when you’re not in the room.

I guess whilst others are laughing and sharing their heads, and least you can use it as a learning experience I guess 😂😂😂😂

Nicemam · 26/07/2024 15:45

She was right. Having hosted many a pre drinks in my time. The absolute carnage I'd come down to in the morning to clean up was unreal. She's probably pissed off anyway she's got loads of mess to tackle, and then you open a can of pop, take 1 sip and leave it, meaning now it's wasted as you've put your mouth on it. That is a bit crap, just take it with you, don't leave it for her to have to put a way and tidy up

AtrociousCircumstance · 26/07/2024 15:45

This is a minor matter, but she was right.

Shockvote · 26/07/2024 15:43

She’s right though isn’t she? Open a whole can for a sip? That would drive me round the bend.

While it's fine to help yourself at the time of the party, the following day you may as well have opened her cupboards and messed with her food.

Even if in a tired, hungover state you didn't think to check it was ok, surely you can see how rude it would be to just create more rubbish AND to waste her drink?

Leafygreen84 · 26/07/2024 15:41

She is right.

Cas112 · 26/07/2024 15:40

Well it is a waste and I think her response is warranted 😂

Moro93 · 26/07/2024 15:40

She didn’t speak to you like a child. You acted like a child, first wasting a can that someone else could have had, expecting someone else to dispose of it for you, then why did you mumble ‘sorry’ and take it with you? That makes you seem even more like a scolded child.

The only way you wouldn’t be unreasonable in this situation is if you were the one who bought those cans, then you could do what you like with them. But you’d still be unreasonable expecting someone else to dispose of it after you.

Coconutter24 · 26/07/2024 15:40

Sounds like the friend is a better friend than you, you mumbled sorry after being rude and yet she’s the one messaging you with an actual apology?!?!

NasiDagang · 26/07/2024 15:39

School holidays is causing so many bored and entitled children to be on Mumsnet. Are you a child OP?

Itiswhysofew · 26/07/2024 15:39

I agree with your friend, and I'd be surprised if someone actually did that.

I probably wouldn't have said anything thoughGrin

Was she hungover and cranky?

ZoeCM · 26/07/2024 15:39

She's right. It was a waste.

FitAt50 · 26/07/2024 15:38

Wishimaywishimight · 26/07/2024 14:15

How is it a waste? Surely she could have poured the remainder into a glass?

Maybe the friend was not thirsty at that time. It's a total waste.
