Friend had a go at me over a can of Diet Coke

Last Saturday friend had a few people around, she lives in the country so taxi/uber is impossible so all those drinking stayed over.

In the morning there was still some stuff out from the night before, including cans of Diet Coke, I opened one and had a sip, put it down not really thinking and said my goodbyes, my friend said “aren’t you taking that with you?” I responded “no I’m good thanks” and she retorted “what I’m absolute waste” - awkward silence, I grabbed the can, mumbled sorry and left.

Shes now messaged me to apologised. I’m just so annoyed that she spoke to me like a child.

Your friend was completely correct. You're really REALLY entitled.

Technonan · 28/07/2024 13:54

I think OP expected everyone to jump in going, 'Ridiculous, she was unreasonable etc etc.'

Now people are pointing out that the OP's behaviour was unreasobale and the friend was quite justified in being annoyed, the OP is having hissy fits.

Don't ask the question if you aren't prepared to accept the answer.

VeryHappyBunny · 28/07/2024 13:20

This thread is another one where the OP puts forward their point/situation/etc and are surprised when 90+% of everyone else disagrees with them. They keep coming back trying to defend themselves and even more people disagree. They come on here to have their actions validated and it backfires, spectacularly.

Captainobvious35 · 28/07/2024 09:11

Haha OP you have embarrassed yourself with this thread. Just accept you’re an inconsiderate friend, instead of getting defensive and making rude comments to people that have answered your question. You sound like a petulant child.

Pigs can eat anything that's in front of them.

I know this. It is no coincidence that big crime groups like the Mafia had/have pig farms. When someone disappears without trace this is where they end up. There literally is no trace.

Sometimes the pig muck and slurry has been searched through looking for any traces of human bodies, pacemakers, metal implants and the like, but generally there is nothing to find. A pig's digestion is very efficient. But I do still like them.

Yep, this. I doubt a five year old would open a can of drink just to take one sip and then leave the rest.

My 5 year old knows to put things in the bin when he’s finished them too, not leave them on the side for someone else to clean up after him.

I’m just so annoyed that she spoke to me like a child.

It sounds like she was annoyed that you behaved like one. 🙄

I have never read Animal Farm and so, in that respect, I too, am pig ignorant. There a loads of classics I have never read, hopefully I will soon have a bit more time and I can rectify this.

However, I still stand by what I say that they are intelligent animals and I rather like them.

You appear to have missed the symbolism in Animal Farm. Pigs are scum, and they should be treated as scum.

Let's clarify a few things for you @coldayscientist because I'm not sure you're fully grasping what happened.

  1. Your friend didn't, I'll repeat that, didn't 'have a go at you over a can of coke'. What they did do was point out that you were being very wasteful to open a can and only take a small portion of the drink in the can (as there is no closure mechanism on a can like there would be on a bottle).
  2. You were, and I'll repeat that too, were being very wasteful in what you did before leaving.
  3. Why didn't you bring the can with you and dispose of it in the nearest recycling bin when you left the house? Why was it the responsibility of the host to continue to clean up after you when you could have easily removed you and the can out of the situation?
  4. You didn't bring a gift (bottle of wine/bunch of flowers/cake/anything) for the host? You don't have to meet your restrictive list of criteria in order to be polite and grateful to your host and you (and clearly as you point out, neither were your friends) polite in this respect to your host. Would it really have been too much of a stretch for you to do this?

I think I'll step away from this thread as I'm completely on your host's side on this and I really wouldn't have apologised to you, I'd be waiting for an apology!

Well said. The OP is literally I oblivious to her rude and disrespectful behaviour and continues with it in the comments. Imagine being that ignorant when it comes to manners

Please don't say this, pigs are really intelligent and better behaved.

It’s like a spoilt pre-teen wrote this post. Thank god my friends have better manners.

Seriously 🤣

@Sethera

she probably didn’t want to do that seeing as OP’s has had her gob on it. I don’t want to eat or drink things that has other people’s spit in.

GreatScruff · 27/07/2024 12:20

By that token, the friend could have drunk the leftovers. She could have decanted it into a bottle to preserve the fizz

No, the sound of you opening the can is the sound of you buying a whole can.

arethereanyleftatall · 27/07/2024 10:16

The op has a two options from this thread.

  1. Learn from it.
  1. Don't learn from it.

The people in her life will make their own choices about the type of behaviour they want from friends. Too late in life I made a decision to remove all the takers from my life, and I'm happier for it. I am hoping I've brought my girls up to be more assertive with takers sooner.

ShouldhavebeencalledAppollo · 27/07/2024 10:02

I think the Op isn't happy having realised that people feel she is bad mannered. And possibly quite a few of her friends are. Which is what tipped the host over the edge.

Not sure how old Op is as they say 'People my age don't take gifts for the host'. But my daughter of 20 would always take something for the host when their friends get together. As her friends do when she hosts them.

For me it's not even finishing the drink. It's opening it then leaving it on the side for the host to clean up. After she hosted and had them all stay over. The attitude of "I don't want it so you clear it up" is so rude. And really shows what Op thinks of her friend.

RoastLambs · 27/07/2024 09:51

I think the OP started this thread in relatively good faith but now has gone in to defence and attack mode so it's all become a bit pointless.

She will keep being who she is, loving sheep and drinking a sip of coke, and the people around her will make their own choices.

CountessWindyBottom · 27/07/2024 09:40

It’s the ‘no I’m good thanks’ comment that is so galling.

The host politely challenged the OP by giving her an ‘out’ and a reminder about the drink and to take it with her but the clueless and rude OP either doesn’t have the social graces to appreciate what the host is saying or is THAT entitled, ignorant and disrespectful of others that she more or less stated, ‘nahh, I’m good thanks. I only wanted a sip, enjoy the tidy up, byeee’.

You need to do some serious work on yourself. This isn’t so much about the can or coke but your ignorance and the way you treat orhers (which is clearly evident in the thread).

What’s a chuck of food?

Just very telling when someone comes on here to ask a question and then all their replies are just taking swipes at others.

FarmGirl78 · 27/07/2024 09:06

coldayscientist · 26/07/2024 21:11

Aww I love sheep 🐑

This is the post that cemented my thoughts that OP is clearly that nightmare friend who thinks nothing of taking swipes at people and just blunders through life being a self centred diva oblivious to others. No wonder friend apologised for something she didn't need to, it's easier than waiting for the next strike out. That friend you walk on eggshells with because they're childish and don't like the truth.

SausageRoll2020 · 27/07/2024 08:59

InTheRainOnATrain · 26/07/2024 14:17

It was an off the cuff snappy comment after a late night drinking and probably a shit nights sleep that she’s now said sorry for. And tbh she wasn’t wrong because it was a waste. Get over it and reply ‘no problem, thanks for having us’ would be my advice.

This ^

SeeMeRun · 27/07/2024 07:10

Funnily enough, that’s the kind of things my kids do. Many people may have been too polite to say anything, but your friend was correct in her opinion (assuming the can was not bought and paid for by you).
If you wanted literally 1 sip of something you could have easily had a sip of water, why open a whole can.
But the thing that would annoy me most is leaving the can (whether you bought it or not) for me to clean up. And I wouldn’t have apologised.

This. All of it.

As if she didn't have enough mess to clean up after a party.

Instead of staying to help with the clean up (as good friends do and especially those who slept over) you added to the mess by dumping your one sip can of coke down like Lord Muck.
