Sorry, but I totally disagree - Cressy was only cognisant of the risk in the same way people who speed on the roads are aware that if they are caught they will get charged and could, maybe, lose their licence. And if it comes to court a good sob story and lawyer will get them off.

In no way at all did she think that she would charged or sentenced in this way. Mummy and daddy have been there applauding her behaviour, and meeting with the headmaster to remind them how much they were paying in fees, whenever she overstepped. I say this as one such parent (the HM meetings) with parent friends like this (roll eyes).

That said, I still have no compassion. If she believes in the cause so vehemently, if her family support her in her activism, then these are the consequences. She may come out of prison with new awareness of the real world and a new cause.

Redgreenfroggy · 26/07/2024 19:10

Maybe little miss privileged will learn the world does not revolve around her. Plus her vile mother will hopefully get a dose of the real world.

my sympathy is with the people who missed important things or even did not get to say goodbye to loved one or the sick people needed the ambulances that could not get through.

YABU for turning to the Express for news.

I don't get the impression that Mrs Gethin is 'moaning' about her daughter missing her brother's wedding; she's stating a fact, illustrating that like many others inconvenienced by the actions of JSO's action, Cressida too is now unable to take part in something the family would have been looking forward too.

Not saying it makes it any easier for those who did not consent to be inconvenienced as a result of the gantry climbing. But we do need to square with ourselves that our collective over-consumption of fossil fuels is inconveniencing millions of non-consenting men, women and children in the global South to the point of displacement due to famine, flood and conflict. I work with displaced families seeking asylum in the UK on grounds which can be traced back to the climate emergency and anthropogenic climate change. Their whole lives ravaged. No-one asked them if they'd mind finding themselves at the sharp, hot, flooded, hungry, war-torn end of our lifestyle choices.

There is no chance that Cressida did not anticipate arrest and the likelihood of a custodial sentence as a result of her direct action and civil disobedience. It is a critical part of pre-action briefing to ensure participants of protests of this kind are able to proceed, or not, fully informed of the likely legal impact of their actions. Nobody is allowed to proceed without having been fully briefed. These are acts of civil conscientious objection. This is also why there are trained legal observers present at many protests; arrests are expected and it is important to ensure advocacy and detailed documentation of the course of events. Not to try to avoid arrest, as these are often inevitable and planned for, but to ensure accurate representation. Cressida would have been 100% aware that this was a likely outcome, and she did it anyway. So the gleeful ner-ner-neh-ner-ner at the long custodial sentence is neither here nor there.

Well said. I completely agree and welcome an alternative viewpoint to the vindictive tone and selfish disinterest of other posters on here.

Thats exactly what it is ....

Wrong. That is destruction and violence. Not 'peaceful'.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 26/07/2024 18:46

XR, IB and JSO are not imploring Tom on his daily commute to change his habits, but are hoping to influence government policy

This is true, even though Tom on his daily commute is exactly the sort who pays the price they extract

But Tom and millions more like him are the very ones who elect the government, and if they're mostly pissed off by the extremists' actions they're not likely to be very sympathetic to a government seen to be dancing to the tune of XR, JSO and the rest

All of which is why the activists need to carry the greater public with them if they hope to succeed - and so far it's simply not happening

@CautiousLurker, right, really need to know now where everyone is getting the information about the brother's wedding. I haven't managed to find anything to support claims that it's a destination wedding or that it's going to max out on carbon. It's almost as if it's made up to perpetuate a stereotype.

And generally, as for the imperative of ideological purity and hypocrisy-hunting, which is always popular on threads like these; this kind of thinking keeps us all in a position of disempowered grudging. We can't win so what's the point in trying to do better? XR, IB and JSO are not imploring Tom on his daily commute to change his habits, but are hoping to influence government policy. There is literally no point in dismissing each other as hypocrites when we have enormous fish to fry on a global level.

‘Ideological purity’? ‘Hypocrisy-hunting’? ‘Disempowered grudging’?!!!

Do you realise how ridiculous you sound?

She's got more of a sentence than a man who broke into his ex's house, smacked her children awake. Assaulted the male babysitter enough to put him in hospital and then had a very distressed primary age child phone the ex, slapped her and forced her to tell the ex what would happen to them if she didn't get home. It's been non stop light sentences for very violent men because of a lack of prison places. Those in possession of child abuse images don't even get a custodial. But I've now seen three non violent women get much longer sentences. I don't think it's cause to celebrate.

The problem there is that the sentence is too short. Not that this one is too long

Different issue - but totally agree this man should have been locked up indefinitely. No idea why/how they released him,

Ciderisrosier · 26/07/2024 18:23

I can’t take JSO seriously and I don’t know anyone who does. Which is a shame because their message is lost in attention seeking behaviour.

One thing is for sure - her expensive education won’t help her survive this.

If she was a boarder it will have stood her in fairly good stead for prison.

This is even mentioned in Porridge.

Posh prisoner: I'm used to this sort of food, I went to Harrow.
Fletcher: Good advert for public school, it prepares you for the nick.

Not relevant to Cressida's brother's wedding at all, as you well know, but literally responding to your comment @-ing me, suggesting I'm Cressida's mum. So no need for that PA 'stupid Northerner' shit.

Well there’s no need to lower the tone, I’m sure.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 26/07/2024 17:40

I think most young people recognise the danger the planet is in

Maybe, or perhaps - lacking mature judgement and experience - they're just very susceptible to the excitement created by a fashionable cause and want to join it for the SM "likes" from their peers

In fairness, though, at least they're not usually getting paid to spout their ill digested cant, which makes a pleasant change from all those sucking at the climate funding teat in some ridiculous attempt to frighten us all to death

cauliflowercheeseplease · 26/07/2024 17:29

Katie Hopkins has done a video about this, absolutely hilarious!

Okay. But that’s nothing to do with my post, which was responding to someone saying they hoped the wedding would have degradable plates or whatever.

You were responding to my posts… and yes it has everything to do with it. She and her entire family are utter hypocrites, especially expecting people to feel compassion for missing the brother’s extremely un-carbon friendly wedding that beloved Cressy was always planning to attend … despite her position on fossil fuels.

Rfthyhuj · 26/07/2024 17:24

CautiousLurker · 26/07/2024 15:16

Because it shows her utter hypocrisy that she and her ilk will sabotage other people’s weddings, delay people attending them, berate people for reliance on oil/fossil fuels - but she would have gone on to attend her brother’s wedding overseas involving air travel.

Her brother can do what he likes - but for her and her mother to decry prison sentence because she cannot now attend just show the dissonance.

Okay. But that’s nothing to do with my post, which was responding to someone saying they hoped the wedding would have degradable plates or whatever.

@popthepopcorns - I don’t think anyone on here who agrees with Cressida’s sentencing is denying that there is a climate emergency!

Ok, so you clearly support JSO’s actions and believe they shouldn’t face consequences for them. Please explain how you think they are helping to stop oil and deal with the climate emergency?

i don’t think she’s very extraordinary at all tbh (although I guess a criminal record is fairly out of the ordinary)

I meant her action was extraordinary as in out of the ordinary. Extra-ordinary.

I don't think the Mum's statement was a great idea-

I def don't feel any sympathy at all for her.
Funny when it's her that is being disrupted it's different.

The prison sentence is meant to send a message.

I have much more admiration for people who clean rivers and take positive initiatives versus the ones who throw soup at works of art and glue themselves to things and shut down motorways-causing widespread chaos and not doing anything to stop oil.

It felt like they were getting away with a lot and they were getting bolder-I don't think they thought they would face any consequences.

This.

And just to give a personal perspective, I managed to avoid the M25 on one of the days because I heard about the disruption before hitting the motorway. Instead I did a 20 mile detour through 2 small towns, adding to the traffic pollution along with several hundred other cars, just as children were walking to school.

No one died, and I was able to phone ahead and shuffle my patient's appointments. But I added to the traffic pollution that day because of Cressida et al's actions. As someone who thinks we all need to do more to care for the planet, starting with our own personal actions, I'm a bit over being lectured thanks.

'Ecoyob' 'Moans'. Blimey, what dense headlines.

I hope that young woman realises she is on the right side of history. Poor kid.

No one is listening. Of course the protests are desperate! It's a literal planet emergency. I hope JSO and other protest groups are planning something really mega next. Wake up world!

Is she really on the right side of history when she takes holidays and has a family that has weddings that requires a flight?

Sounds like she is a hypocrite to me.
