Why are these protesters always very middle class and from moneyed backgrounds?

AmateurDad · 26/07/2024 23:40

OhHelloMiss · 26/07/2024 11:12

I don't care at all

I work in a prison and see prisoners miss out on things everyday.

She's nobody special

Er, well, she is, because she committed her crime out of concern for the planet…. Which is somewhat uncommon…

Izzynohopanda · 26/07/2024 23:27

I hadn’t realised that this wasn’t Cressida first offence, so it’s not like she was unaware of what could happen. I guess she thought it was a jolly jape, and people like her don’t get jailed.

IllMetByMoonlight · 26/07/2024 22:30

CautiousLurker · 26/07/2024 22:21

No idea why I warranted the patronising TedTalk. I don’t need to be lecture on JSO activities as I am neither stupid nor naive. I’ve been a peaceful protestor myself in the past.

Cressida and her colleagues had all received multiple sentences previously. All resulted in suspended sentences, fines and community service. Of course she and her confederates had no idea a 4 or 5 year sentence would be handed down. Their experience has taught them that feigning contrition, flashing their virtue or, in her case, her superior education and musical talent would serve as mitigating factors. The presiding Judge was very clear he was having none of it.

I apologise. I thought your 19:24 post was in response to my previous post. But my three paragraphs in response to your three paragraphs (even if they weren't aimed at me) hardly qualify as a "patronising TedTalk", do they?

CautiousLurker · 26/07/2024 22:29

Grandmasswagbag · 26/07/2024 22:12

I haven't read much about this other than the protestors had been jailed. 4 years !!?? I was thinking 4 months would be harsh. I'm completely on the fence about these guys. Yes on a human level they are annoying, but also in 10 years time we will be looking back wondering why no one listened to them. How can they go to prison for 4 years when actual violent criminals would serve the same/less?

80%+ of the population agree that climate matters need tackling urgently. JSO has done bugger all to move this up the political agenda - all they’ve done is alienate people who agree/support what they are campaigning for. They’ve distracted government from the actual issue by making public order and policing of these protests a front page headline.

People will not look back on these people and think ‘ah, they had it right. What heroes. Why didn’t we listen?’ Because we already appreciate the message. And blocking the motorway, impacting people’s health and livelihoods has done nothing to affect climate change.

Until China et al change their behaviours, until we (as a nation) stop buying their goods and importing them, anything we do here in the UK is largely tinkering around the edges.

I wonder what her nickname in prison will be? Maybe Dick (Cressida dick) or Olive (oil).

Maybe Eggy (egg and cress sarnie).

CautiousLurker · 26/07/2024 22:21

IllMetByMoonlight · 26/07/2024 21:14

Cautious, why are you so adamant that this sentence has come as some kind of unexpected, unpleasant surprise to Cressida? It really didn't. When statements reference 'injustice' it doesn't mean that the sentence itself was unexpected.

Just in the years since the gantry-climb, JSO activists have been arrested, worn tags, faced deportation, spent time as remand prisoners (including CG herself), and served lengthy custodial sentences. In a hardening political climate, and in the face of new public order legislation, activists were aware of new precedents for long sentences being set as well as the maximum sentence length.

JSO isn't some kind of shady, secretive outfit: anyone can sign up for an introductory zoom call via a link on the very public website, where, incidentally, they also publish details of activists' arrests, court appearances and sentences alongside campaigning successes such as acquittals, releases from prison and, most importantly, policy change.

Do you think her brothers wedding will be targeted? If so, that’s a little unfair on them.

There’s a lot of people on TikTok saying they will. They know which country/city and are trying to get more details. Might be hot air.

Anewuser · 26/07/2024 11:21

It was her brother’s speech that was even worse.

The hypocrisy that she would have flown to be at his wedding.

Please could someone of the 15% give their opinion because I was sure this would be 100% agreeing with OP.

So she’s achieved her goal then? Reduction of oil usage.

dottiehens · 26/07/2024 22:04

Pootles34 · 26/07/2024 17:00

The fact that her daughter is going to prison for four years, and her main issue is that she's going to miss her son's wedding, is frankly hilarious.

I know this is unbelievable. 😂

Yalta · 26/07/2024 21:27

It will be a culture shock at first but then once out , it will make her a “celebrity” in the JSO organisation

I would bet a million quid that Cressida never wants to hear the word ‘oil’ again after four years in the nick.

By then reality will have sunk in big time and the smug look on her earnest little face will be long gone. Good job mum and dad are loaded as I doubt people will be queuing up to employ her.

dottiehens · 26/07/2024 21:58

Karma got the best of her. I have not sympathy and the mother lacks of self awareness.

Listentogold · 26/07/2024 21:39

Has any man from this group been jailed.
Has he had this abuse against him.
I'm not saying she shouldn't have been jailed.
In fact 4 years isn't long enough now I've read about people
getting delayed going to the hospital, funerals etc.

Yalta · 26/07/2024 21:27

ZoeCM · 26/07/2024 16:05

I actually think that jailing them won’t work as they will wear it as a badge of honour

I disagree. I think Cressida, having grown up in a mansion and been privately educated, is going to get a truly gigantic culture shock in prison. I doubt it'll take long before she's thinking "Oh fuck, I really didn't think this through, did I?"

It will be a culture shock at first but then once out , it will make her a “celebrity” in the JSO organisation

Allfur · 26/07/2024 21:15

Given how active and defensive the vat on private school threads were on mumsnet, I'm surprised there's so much hate for cressida on here

IllMetByMoonlight · 26/07/2024 21:14

CautiousLurker · 26/07/2024 19:24

Sorry, but I totally disagree - Cressy was only cognisant of the risk in the same way people who speed on the roads are aware that if they are caught they will get charged and could, maybe, lose their licence. And if it comes to court a good sob story and lawyer will get them off.

In no way at all did she think that she would charged or sentenced in this way. Mummy and daddy have been there applauding her behaviour, and meeting with the headmaster to remind them how much they were paying in fees, whenever she overstepped. I say this as one such parent (the HM meetings) with parent friends like this (roll eyes).

That said, I still have no compassion. If she believes in the cause so vehemently, if her family support her in her activism, then these are the consequences. She may come out of prison with new awareness of the real world and a new cause.

holju · 26/07/2024 20:22

I don't agree with the methods used by JSO but the gloating on here and in the media over the prison sentence is horrible.

They didn't even receive the maximum they could've. They were repeat offenders. They refused to stop. They aren't above the law. I'll reserve horrible for the people who missed funerals, cancer treatment and all the other stuff suffered at the hands of JSO goons. It was very horrible for them.

UniversalAunt · 26/07/2024 20:39

Has Cressida’s brother spoken up on her behalf?
If so, he has brought himself up for media scrutiny & with that comes the ‘court’ of public opinion.

If he’s not muttered a squeak about the judgement & sentencing, then he is keeping a low & private profile.

Izzynohopanda · 26/07/2024 20:39

commonground · 26/07/2024 16:39

Gosh, what a great statement by the mum. I really feel for her. She mentioned the wedding to paint a picture of a regular family girl and an example of what she will miss.

She is right, btw. No one is listening. We are screwed. If we had another 100 years to effect change we might be OK. But we don't.

And what about all the events, appointments, etc the regular people missed due to her actions. She may be a ‘regular family girl ’ but that doesn’t excuse her actions. If being a ‘regular family person’ was a defence, then most people wouldn’t be in prison.

BeavisMcTavish · 26/07/2024 20:31

popthepopcorns · 26/07/2024 16:29

How unutterably depressing that only 20% of people (even here, on Mumsnet, where the level of education is ostensibly higher than average) have any understanding of the impending climate emergency.

The word 'emergency' isn't hyperbole. We are on the brink of catastrophe.
Insects are disappearing, bird and animal species are becoming extinct, the few remaining forests are still being cleared... people keep buying crap from Shein and driving around cities in SUVs - and this poor girl is the problem?

Bloody hell, wake up!

Oh, do fuck off will you, it’s exactly this kind of ‘I’m more intelligent and insightful than you’ which turns people off the JSO bell ends.

XR, IB and JSO are not imploring Tom on his daily commute to change his habits, but are hoping to influence government policy

This is true, even though Tom on his daily commute is exactly the sort who pays the price they extract

But Tom and millions more like him are the very ones who elect the government, and if they're mostly pissed off by the extremists' actions they're not likely to be very sympathetic to a government seen to be dancing to the tune of XR, JSO and the rest

All of which is why the activists need to carry the greater public with them if they hope to succeed - and so far it's simply not happening

You are right, of course, in that the public elects its leaders and that public backlash is a massive issue. People feel hectored and perceive that someone ‐woe betide them if they're a bit posh or fail the hypocrisy test‐ is 'telling them what to do'. I'm not sure how we get around it ‐it feels a bit hopeless when we're seeing the impact of a heating climate unfold on a global stage but seem to find it so hard to focus on the real obstacles to progress. And it's not JSO, whatever we may think of their campaign strategies.

I honestly think this is going to be one of the greatest tragedies going forward: we'll start reaching tipping points of increasing significance, and it'll be too late when it dawns on us that the climate emergency didn't care whether we felt impinged upon by 'worthy' types suggesting the government stop issuing oil licences, and we were busy slagging off someone's mum on a parenting forum.

Fizbosshoes · 26/07/2024 20:15

I think a 4 year prison sentence seems harsh

However (to me) it seems counter intuitive to create the type of disruption that would have created way more emissions and pollution...in the name of climate change....People taking detours, being stuck for hours potentially with their engines idling, delivery lorries needing to keep food/materials at a certain temp (some of which may have perished/got wasted) .
Same when some prat decides to glue themselves to a train or block a bus lane....the result - probably people taking ubers or cabs...how is that helping the cause...??

While most sensible people are aware of the climate emergency they're also thinking of their kids immediate future ....like next week - they need to go to work to earn money to put a roof over their head and food on the table now, they probably can't afford to take 3 days off to sit in a road or climb a motorway gantry.
