I'm also interested in how 'green' the wedding is. It's a destination wedding isn't it? So all those people, on all those flights...

I thought I’d read that then convinced myself I must be mistaken as, surely, both she and her pious family members wouldn’t dream of using all that oil and fuel flying somewhere?

kirbykirby · 26/07/2024 12:55

Is that her real name? Sounds like a character from Viz!

IllMetByMoonlight · 26/07/2024 12:52

YABU for turning to the Express for news.

I don't get the impression that Mrs Gethin is 'moaning' about her daughter missing her brother's wedding; she's stating a fact, illustrating that like many others inconvenienced by the actions of JSO's action, Cressida too is now unable to take part in something the family would have been looking forward too.

Not saying it makes it any easier for those who did not consent to be inconvenienced as a result of the gantry climbing. But we do need to square with ourselves that our collective over-consumption of fossil fuels is inconveniencing millions of non-consenting men, women and children in the global South to the point of displacement due to famine, flood and conflict. I work with displaced families seeking asylum in the UK on grounds which can be traced back to the climate emergency and anthropogenic climate change. Their whole lives ravaged. No-one asked them if they'd mind finding themselves at the sharp, hot, flooded, hungry, war-torn end of our lifestyle choices.

There is no chance that Cressida did not anticipate arrest and the likelihood of a custodial sentence as a result of her direct action and civil disobedience. It is a critical part of pre-action briefing to ensure participants of protests of this kind are able to proceed, or not, fully informed of the likely legal impact of their actions. Nobody is allowed to proceed without having been fully briefed. These are acts of civil conscientious objection. This is also why there are trained legal observers present at many protests; arrests are expected and it is important to ensure advocacy and detailed documentation of the course of events. Not to try to avoid arrest, as these are often inevitable and planned for, but to ensure accurate representation. Cressida would have been 100% aware that this was a likely outcome, and she did it anyway. So the gleeful ner-ner-neh-ner-ner at the long custodial sentence is neither here nor there.

TinyYellow · 26/07/2024 12:52

I think the sentence given was fair, but I can forgive her mum for being upset that her daughter won’t be at her son’s wedding. It wasn’t the mum that broke the law and I’m sure all of us that are mothers would hope that our children would attend each others weddings. It is possible to condemn someone’s actions at the same time as feeling sympathy for their affected family members.

I’m just interested to know if the wedding is carbon neutral? All fabrics sourced and woven in the UK, the wedding party and guests arriving on foot and via bicycle; catering produce and flowers all sourced from local farmers and delivered to the venue via horse and cart? The venue powered and heated by heat pumps and green energy?

Maybe I am jaded, but I am guessing not.

So no, I couldn’t give a flying f**k that she’ll miss a wedding.

mummydoris2006 · 26/07/2024 12:46

On the 14th Feb 2022 my DH suffered a heart attack on the M25 behind the wheel of a 44 tonne lorry. He managed to get the lorry across 4 lanes of traffic to a standstill without injuring himself or any other driver on the road. The paramedics do not know how he did it and found him out the next day in hospital to shake his hand.
He rang my DM while waiting for the ambulance as he didn't want to worry me! She says shell never forget the panic in his voice that he could hear the sirens but they couldn't find him. Thankfully he's still with us, albeit a lot less healthy than he was.
If Cressida had decided to pull her little stunt that day there's a high chance he wouldn't be here today, I could not care less that she will miss her brother's wedding and would gladly shake the judge's hand that sentenced her to a custodial sentence.

NeverMindTheBackProblems · 26/07/2024 12:43

Good.

FormerlyPathologicallyHappy · 26/07/2024 12:42

It’s ok she can go to his next one.

viques · 26/07/2024 12:40

I am smiling at the unfortunate placing of the advert for toilet paper under
Cressida’s mother and her emotional speech. Who gives a crap indeed?

Did her protest actually go ahead, though? I thought they were sentenced for conspiracy?

I know its been posted but its all explained here including the disruption.

Just Stop Oil Founder & Activists JAILED for combined 21 Years

It went ahead. It caused chaos. The court heard victim statements from someone who missed a cancer appointment so their treatment was delayed. Someone who missed a funeral, someone who missed an exam. A child with SEN who was being taken to school in a taxi missed taking their medication at school which made them volatile and putting the driver/escort at risk.

noblegiraffe · 26/07/2024 12:24

Remember that woman who avoided going to jail for stabbing her boyfriend because she was 'too bright for prison' as she was at Oxford?

There's certainly a precedent for letting bright white girls get away with crime so I can see why the mother might be confused as to why it doesn't apply here.

GiveMeSpanakopita · 26/07/2024 12:22

oh golly gosh how utterly dreadful for poor cressida, those oiks who missed their chemo appointments because ER blocked the road really have nothing to complain about do they

RunningJo · 26/07/2024 12:20

You break the law, you face the consequences.

INeedAnotherName · 26/07/2024 12:16

I did see a comment about people going and spraying orange veg paint all over the brothers wedding too.

Ouch! Surely tomato soup would be more appropriate? But it would be "funny" if people blocked the bride's route to church, especially if she was riding in an old and polluting car 😏

Thelnebriati · 26/07/2024 11:34

I'll just pop this here;
''I think we should let the Just Stop Oil girl out of prison to attend her brother's wedding, but then stage a protest and block the roads.''

Oh! Might be the only road block I’d join in!

User8646382 · 26/07/2024 12:15

Dear little Cressie is about to get the wake up call of her life. I don’t suppose there are many ‘kind’ people in the clink.

AGodawfulsmallaffair · 26/07/2024 12:15

Yeah, boo hoo.

ThreeFeetTall · 26/07/2024 12:14

But it's her mum? Of course prisoners families are upset about them missing family events- I'm sure that applies to all prisoners? She's not responsible for her adult daughters actions

Nobodywouldknow · 26/07/2024 12:11

What a dimwit. She will presumably regret her actions in about 5 years time when her litany of criminal convictions stops her ever getting a real job. As for flying to the wedding, smdh. What about your carbon footprint, Cressie?

Kitkatcatflap · 26/07/2024 12:09

I winced when I read the 'she will miss her brother's wedding'. Also, the mother saying that Cressida grew up knowing right from wrong and has a strong moral compass. That she (Cressida) tried the political route but when nothing happend she had to do something - break the law, cause hours and hours of delays, wasting police time and tax payers money.

So cringe.

FrippEnos · 26/07/2024 12:09

We all know what will happen.
She will put a request in , turn the water works on and get a day release and still be able to go.
