To be really sick of supermarkets treating paying customers like scum

Sainsbury's traps you in the self service pen of shame until you scan your receipt like a good little girl

Tesco won't take the security tags off your wine until you've not only paid but they've examined your receipt in detail to make sure your wine is paid for - sort of a performance so you remember your place

Waitrose makes a bit song and dance about doing the rescan of self scanning shops (I don't do self scanning because why would I sign up for this extra work?)

Just in Lidl and my wine set off the security alarm even though I've had the tags taken off and the security guard chased me out the door to try to get me to show him inside my bags (er no fuck off pal)

Aldi staff try to look in your shopping bags as you queue

Does anywhere NOT get a kick out of treating their profit drivers like filth any more?

I will probably just have to live off UHPs from the local Greggs at this rate

me too! but not for years.

Where?

but this poster is saying they actually stopped them being installed

Several towns in the SW. A family member's local overground in SE London.

OptimismvsRealism · 25/07/2024 14:40

Really. How do you think scanning your little receipt like a good girl good girl can I have a biscuit stops theft?

If it's not to stop theft, what's their reason for doing it?

whichfan · 27/07/2024 15:15

Oh it's you again. You lead a very hateful life OP - you don't like old people, bikes, queuing and now supermarkets.

and the rest

Seems. Seems very unhappy. Even when away on holiday the OP is bitching (about Britain that time)

In fact one of the threads was entirely about how utterly unhappy she is.

Well if you dwell on stuff like this…

Nearest Gail’s is 10 miles
independent bakers in the same town
wenzels 7 miles

butchers, 7 miles but you have to pay £3.50 to park

supermarket is 3 miles

Needmorelego · 27/07/2024 14:45

@Gogogo12345 oh everywhere has Greggs.... usually several branches.
Except they don't sell loaves of bread anymore.
(can't comment on the other 2)

Well Gails and Wenzels def sell bread as do our independent bakers Not surprised about the greggs though. Only ever seen school kids and workmen in it

Needmorelego · 27/07/2024 14:46

@mrandmrsrobinson why?
What's Boots done to you?

@Sunshineandpool many average medium sized towns don't have anything as fancy as an actual bakery to buy a nicer loaf of bread from.
It's the supermarket or convenience/corner shops as the only options.
Although Morrisons do some really nice fresh bread.

Really? I live in a smallish/ mefium town We have 4 independent bakeries plus Wenzels Greggs and Gails

As well as at least 3 butchers, 3 farm shops and a greengrocer

Needmorelego · 27/07/2024 13:31

@S0livagant my mums town has a monthly farmers market and a food fair a couple of times a year.
People complain about it because it's "far too expensive" 🤣🤣🤣

Ours isn't for what you get, non upf bread and fruit and veg that is fresh and tastes of something. I save by what I don't buy at the supermarket, I mostly stick to basic ingredients.

@S0livagant lucky for you 🙂

We have a strong culture of shopping small and local around here. Plenty of allotment growers giving away and swapping produce too. Eggs at farm gates. Farmers market. I could potentially only go to the supermarket fortnightly if it got too unfriendly.

Many do though. Our small town has three bakeries, the next nearest has two. We have a local butcher as well, there's another two a 15 minute drive away, then another 25 minutes away just off the top of my head.

I call bull shit on this

you managed to stop ticket barriers being installed

entirely reasonable and widespread measure for ensuring tickets have been purchased… across the world.

TunnocksOrDeath · 27/07/2024 09:11

I had no idea what scanning a receipt in the pen of shame even was till reading this thread. In our Sainsbury's you use the zapper as you go round, or scan at the end, then you pay, and you leave. If Sainsburys has paid for some weird extra measures to be installed in a particular store, it means that that store has higher than usual issue with theft. I quite like it if the beeper goes off when I'm leaving, it usually means there's a tag left on something and it can be removed straight away, rather than discovering it at home and having to make an extra journey back to have it removed. Its perfectly obvious why they would ask to see a receipt for that, so it doesn't bother me at all.

WickedSerious · 27/07/2024 08:45

WithOneLook · 26/07/2024 07:17

Er.....yes.....Sainsbury's. Not because it was a big deal aside the fact I needed to leave QUICKLY. They've installed one way gates INTO the store, gates were closed to the manned tills and I tried to get out through the self service area to the toilets and didn't have a receipt as I'd not bought anything. I had to ask the staff member on the self serve to let me out. Not an issue that bothers me day-to-day but was that day and I imagine will be equally fun when we get to potty training stage.

Our Tesco installed these gates recently, now we have to cut through the pretend you work here checkouts if we haven't bought anything.

LlynTegid · 27/07/2024 08:37

You should not blame the supermarkets.

You should blame the thieves, and the previous government for decriminalising shop theft in all but name.

whichfan · 27/07/2024 08:08

yoteyak · 26/07/2024 22:35

Not true nobody complains. Some of us complained when our local station (or rather the private company that stole it from us with government connivance) wanted to treat us like criminals in this way by installing ticket barriers.

We campaigned successfully and managed to defeat the proposal using planning laws. We still are thus treated in a civilised manner when we arrive home on a train, rather than being dealt with as though we are all fare-dodgers or criminals and forced into interminable queues like in many other less-civilised localities.

Supermarkets could learn from this. They won't, of course, driven as they are exclusively by profit rather than any inkling of public service. Oh for the days of my youth before local shops were forced out of business by criminal gangs of tescos, lidls, sainsburieds and other supermarket mafias!

Needmorelego · 26/07/2024 23:35

@Sunshineandpool what do you mean by supermarkets don't make money on deliveries?
I order £50 of food from Iceland to be delivered that's the same £50 as if I had paid in store.
(I have to pay a bit more to cover the picking, bags and delivery but the £50 on food is £50 regardless of how I purchase it)
I actually buy more by doing home delivery because the reason I do it is because I can't physically carry £50 worth of shopping home.
If I go in store I buy a lot less because I can only buy what I can carry.

Wideskye · 26/07/2024 23:27

I use the local butcher and the greengrocer at the market. I have my milk delivered in milk bottles. I use the local co op, Lidl and Waitrose.
I always go to a till that has a human.
Nice chit chat. Never come across a member of staff that is rude.
Treat people as you want to be treated.

Sunshineandpool · 26/07/2024 23:14

Needmorelego · 26/07/2024 18:14

@S0livagant surely the "enough" is doing home delivery.
If you don't like the way staff in shops do their jobs - then don't go in the shop.
Quite frankly with the amount of shopping lifting and aggressive behaviour towards retail staff I think in a few years physical shops won't be the norm - everything will have to be ordered.
Pretty much like "the old days" when you stood at the counter, asked for what you wanted and they handed it to you. You didn't pick it off the shelf and place it in a trolley.
We (society) have gone in a circle of how we purchase products.

I doubt it. They don't make money on deliveries do they?
