Sickening behaviour. Surely tasering the man is enough.
He is on the floor tasered so you give him some kickings to the head?

Hope this is properly investigated.
Greater Manchester Police have an awful reputation.

I hope the female police officer who had her nose broken is ok?

Me too! Wouldn’t like to imagine the absolute terror if the thugs who caused all of this in the first place, managed to get hold of a firearm!

@eggplant16

Bless you

Not condoning what's happened and we won't know what has gone on unless they do an independent review but I do I wonder how much trauma that police officer has been through to react like that

So you are condoning it then?

I do wonder if Farage is going to be asked his view - given what 2 of his MPs think

Reform UK MPs have emphatically leapt to the defence of Manchester police after an incident at the airport yesterday sparked protests.
Footage posted online yesterday showed a male officer kicking a man who was being pinned to the ground before stamping on his head.
Police say the incident unfolded after “three officers were subject to a violent assault" in which one officer's nose was broken.
However the treatment of the suspect lying on the ground has sparked fury, with many Labour MPs demanding an urgent investigation.
Reform UK’s Richard Tice has come out to back the police amid the furore, saying that the footage is in fact “reassuring” rather than “distressing”.
He told TalkTV: “I’ve only just seen this footage, but based on what I’ve heard and seen this is not distressing, this is reassuring!”
“The simple answer is that if the police had had to use tasers, which at least two officers if not three clearly had, then there is a serious issue going on.
“Police officers don’t use tasers unless they are genuinely concerned for the safety of members of public and themselves, and bearing in mind these are weapons-carrying officers, who are there to prevent acts of terrorism, making split-second judgements.
“They have rightly concluded that safety is the better option. They don’t know if these people have grenades under their bodies!”
He was backed by fellow Reform UK MP Lee Anderson, who added: “The vast majority of decent Brits would applaud this type of policing. We are sick of the namby pamby approach”.
“Time to back our boys in blue.”

Meanwhile - it seems one of the brothers of one of the victims works for the police. The person who was kicked in the head has a cyst on his brain.

hmm @Gummybear23 it’s fine to watch a 12 second clip and make judgements, but did you also read this:

”During our response, three officers were assaulted. One female officer suffered a broken nose and the other officers were forced to the ground and suffered injuries which required hospital treatment.”

Do you know what it takes to subdue an unruly suspect who has attacked multiple officers and hospitalised one?

Perhaps some of the keyboard protesters who weirdly open a thread to get everyone piling in (excuse the allusion) could ask themselves what preceded this footage, and what does it take to subdue someone who has been that violent and belligerent in the lead up?

I come from a family of coppers. We've had one or two family members in the job since the sixties.

None of them think that this is permissible, justifiable or excusable, whatever preceded the clip.

I’d love to see similar outrage against the man who stabbed the soldier.

Are you kidding.
Not comparable in the slightest.
This thread is about police officers who have a responsibility to the public. Not act with brutality and unreasonable force.

What the hell has that got to do with this thread? This is a police officer's actions being discussed, not some random member of the public!

MrTiddlesTheCat · 25/07/2024 17:54

Why are people assuming the man on the floor broke the police officers nose? The police statement doesn't say she was punched or that the man on the floor was responsible. The two men being assualted were charged with affray, not assaulting a police officer.

Perhaps wait for the full story before using that as a justification for police brutality.

AnnieSnap · 25/07/2024 17:50

Naunet · 25/07/2024 16:51

What are you talking about? Are you suggesting we wouldn’t be hearing about it if he’d broken a males nose?!

We wouldn’t be hearing that it was a “male” Officer’s nose!

AnnieSnap · 25/07/2024 17:48

Natbro · 25/07/2024 16:45

F* around and find out 😄 if you behave yourself and comply this would not happen. Only themselves to blame... unfortunately the police officer will probably lose his job over this though!

This is rubbish. Officers assaulting (including sexually assaulting), pushing around, being verbally abusive to innocent people is frightening common. Maybe take a look at the evidence for that. I really can’t be bothered to waste my time educating you.

StressedAndDepressed1 · 25/07/2024 17:34

There's a reason they emphasise that it was a female officer who had their nose broken, not just an officer

And that is......?

StressedAndDepressed1 · 25/07/2024 17:34

eggplant16 · 25/07/2024 17:10

I think its done for effect. People like to think of some poor lassie with a broken nose.

eggplant16 · 25/07/2024 17:25

I suppose I'm middle class , older than many here. I have also been going about my business in Manchester and seen some appalling behaviour by the police. One of the most troubling was female.

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 25/07/2024 17:20

Now the middle class world of mumsnet may not like it, but these police will deal with scum, day in day out throughout their careers. Thieves, rapists, child abusers, murders, wife beaters.

As is increasingly becoming clear, quite a few police are themselves violent thugs, rapists and abusers. You don't need to be a 'middle class Mumsnetter' to understand that, or to know that dealing with scum doesn't mean you should be sinking to their level.

Resilience · 25/07/2024 17:15

I'm an ex police officer and I can't see an obvious justification for this. Granted I never worked firearms (though worked with them quite regularly). All my training was about delivering physical blows to the centre mass of the body and deliberately avoiding the head. There will be occasions where it is justified to deliberately target the head, but these are rare and IMHO difficult to apply to a situation where it appears that someone is already down on the floor and incapacitated through Taser.

The stakes were always going to be higher because it was in an airport. Most officers would rather be under investigation for inappropriate use of force on an individual than risk not taking action and find they've failed to prevent a mass casualty situation in an airport. Add that to the fact that en route the officers were probably hearing about how violent the suspect was being towards the officers already in attendance and that one of them had already been injured. Then when they get there the suspect apparently continued to resist to the point of being tasered. Most people would stop being aggressive to police in an airport environment way before this point. All of which are indicative of an individual who is very determined to see out his end goal (which police have to consider may be terrorism) or someone who is intoxicated or having some sort of mental health episode (risk to the public will still override this in an airport until the situation is under control). So I can see how adrenaline overtook judgment, even for a firearms cop, but it is not ok unless there's a huge piece of information we're missing.

There will always be people who defend the police no matter what. When Sarah Everard was killed, there were people out defending his colleagues, the ones who ‘jokingly’ called him The Rapist. People will defend the police because they want to believe they live in a world where if you’re good, nothing bad will happen to you, and it’s just a few bad apples etc. It’s basically the same mentality as the Not All Men brigade.

Disgusting.

I think people perceive it as worse because she's a female. Every single post has mentioned "the female police officer". If it was a man I don't think people would say "broke the nose of a male police officer". They'd just say police officer.

Naunet · 25/07/2024 16:56

HRTQueen · 25/07/2024 16:35

I am not shocked at people defending the police

I know if the family were white and appeared to be middle class the police response wouldn't be excused (and police would treat them differently)

There is absolutely no excuse for this behaviour police have a role to keep the peace

I have seen the footage, and it looks horrible. But, a female PC did end up with a broken nose, and other witnesses say he was trying to grab a firearm.

Perhaps best to wait until it’s investigated properly.🤷‍♀️

In the video you can quite clearly see the man is restrained on the floor. He is then kicked in the head and they stamp on his head. Allegedly someone else (a "suspect") was also assaulted.

The use of force was, in this case, completely disproportionate. If they felt threatened, they should have used their tasers. They didn't, because he had an officer restraining him. Therefore he did not have ANY reason to act as he did. At the least, it's s.18 GBH. At the worst, it's attempted murder.

Naunet · 25/07/2024 16:51

eggplant16 · 25/07/2024 16:46

Sick of hearing about the female with the broken nose tbh. Either they work on an equal basis or they don't.

He will loose his job because he used extreme violence when it was not needed

Rightly so
