Travelled to friend's house for dinner, just strawberries for desert - AIBU to think it's low effort?

On the weekend my partner and I travelled to a friend's house for dinner. The journey was over an hour by train.

The main course was sausages with nice sides (potato salad, tomato salad, another salad). That was nice.

But desert was just strawberries with some pouring cream.

We had a nice time, but AIBU to feel that the desert was very low effort and unexciting, and should have been more exciting than strawberries given the journey?

When my friend came to mine, I did a 3-course meal, feeling I should make a big effort because of her long journey.

This is so weird. So glad I don’t have friends like you.

Please don’t blame other women for the OPs gross entitlement.

I stand by my comment.

What did you contribute to the meal other than your presence? That's the real question here...

saveforthat · 24/07/2024 19:54

If they are Cheddar strawberries YABU as this is peak strawberry season and they are the food of the Gods.

What were you expecting.. crepes suzette?

Made by the table with a wheelie trolley and portable gas burner?

Trixiefirecracker · 24/07/2024 19:40

My attitude is you should be grateful for everything that you are offered. The thought of running to Mumsnet to complain about some strawberries being too basic is extraordinary to me. Be grateful for what you are given, be doubly grateful that someone likes you enough to prepare food for you and wants your company.

Magnastorm · 24/07/2024 19:35

Years ago, I went to a friend's house for dinner, and they served up pasta with an utterly rank sauce.

I ate it, thanked them and didn't bitch about it behind their backs, due to not being a complete twat.

BBQs are different. I don't really like them because I don't want to eat sausages and burgers, but I know in advance the food will be basic so I make sure I eat before and after.

If I was invited for dinner then served half a BBQ (no mention of bread) then I'd be very disappointed and would need to cook when I got home.

I just really don't like sausages and don't think of them as a meal at all. Same with burgers.

I eat a huge variety of food, and none of it is what I call freezer food. If you like chicken nuggets etc then you do you, but it's not really the kind of thing to serve up when you've invited people for dinner!

I wouldn't do pasta either, but suggested it as a better alternative because there are lots of really good quick pasta recipes.

I do like strawberries though!

Edited

Well, good job you're not invited here.

What does freezer food and chicken nuggets have to do with anything? It was sausages, 3 different types of salad and fresh fruit. Literally the opposite of freezer food.

Have you never been to a barbeque? Sausages and salads are pretty standard summer fare here. I wouldn't thank you for a quick pasta dish - but neither would I take to MN to complain if I was served one.

I would have been delighted with the meal served to OP - but then I'm not an entitled twit.

I think your both unreasonable. Yes op sounds lazy to be honest (don't come me all, it is) and if i invited someone for dinner and they came all that way I'd serve better food options. As for you op putting your mate on mumsnet ... not nice. I think this rant was best for the train journey home !!

It's not lazy to think about dessert, go out and buy it, prepare and serve it.

I travelled three hours for a salad. We thought it was the starter but that was it! Not even an interesting one. We did the proverbial 'stopping at McDonalds' on the way home.
But no I think strawberries and cream is a totally appropriate summer dessert.

If you think this is bad you should read the recent thread about the woman whose hosts didn't even have anything to drink including water from what I can remember

You’re one of the only ones who think this is bad.

LouH1981 · 24/07/2024 16:46

I love strawberries and cream. Not cheap either depending on how many was served. I’d be happy with that. Nice of her to invite you over.

DancingLions · 24/07/2024 16:36

It's been an eye opener thats for sure. If this thread is representative then I'm glad I'm not on the dinner party circuit!

Usually with my friends it's bring a bottle (or two) and snacks 😂 or occasionally a takeaway gets ordered.

I like the idea of dinner parties but sounds like an absolute minefield as well as being a huge effort and expense.

I recently drove my daughter a long trip to see a family member. I stayed at a Premier inn so not to put them out (they had a baby several months earlier) but they invited us to have dinner there. This was planned in advance - they checked we would be OK with the main course. But there was no dessert at all. I was pretty stumped - it felt unwelcoming. Strawberries and cream would have been lovely!

Jesus!!

Unwelcoming because you didn't get a dessert? Really???

The more I read on here the more I realise there is a reason I'm not a "people person" - some are really that self obsessed to the point they moan and judge on the perceieved quality of food they had cooked for them and the lack of dessert.

Are people really that self absorbed?

Sparrowball · 24/07/2024 15:53

J97King · 24/07/2024 15:45

No we didn't. We were asked to come meet the baby. They offered to make us food and checked in advance what we eat. We made a huge effort to get there - different part of the country. We stayed in a hotel. Mum is super organised. Mini co-op practically next door. They just don't do dessert apparently.

Not everyone has dessert. I hope you've recovered from the shop bought pasta sauce and your cake being banished to the cupboard.

I'll keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

drivinmecrazy · 24/07/2024 15:52

Well, I've served strawberries at plenty of dinner parties.

Favourite one is strawberries with a dash of brandy and black pepper.
Even been known to put a can of squirty cream on the table for a bit of retro fun!

Don't knock it till you've tried it. The pepper and brandy really bring out the flavour.

You're welcome.

Probably invited themselves too.

A baby that's only months old and no dessert? Maybe you should report them to social services?

🙄🙄🙄🙄

J97King · 24/07/2024 15:38

Even I could buy a dessert from the supermarket. I actually brought a cake and they put it in the cupboard!

Iwasafool · 24/07/2024 15:32

Had to go out to pick up some dry cleaning and I went into Sainsbury's and bought strawberries and a pot of cream. I blame this thread.
