Travelled to friend's house for dinner, just strawberries for desert - AIBU to think it's low effort?

On the weekend my partner and I travelled to a friend's house for dinner. The journey was over an hour by train.

The main course was sausages with nice sides (potato salad, tomato salad, another salad). That was nice.

But desert was just strawberries with some pouring cream.

We had a nice time, but AIBU to feel that the desert was very low effort and unexciting, and should have been more exciting than strawberries given the journey?

When my friend came to mine, I did a 3-course meal, feeling I should make a big effort because of her long journey.

I'm not meaning to say I ever hope for super impressive food. I just find a bowl of strawberries very unexciting.

I'm curious as to what you'd find acceptable. Do you mean a cooked dessert such as Baked Alaska?

ninetieseyebrows · 24/07/2024 01:03

Dry and sandy were they?

What a shit friend you are, I really hope this is a wind up, if not @SquidgeyB - don't invite again

Summerflames · 24/07/2024 01:02

Fuck me, is this a wind up???

You sound so rude OP. If I travelled to see my mate and got given sandwiches I'd be happy, I'm there for the friendship not the food!

Well I had friends over at the weekend and made sausages with salads and strawberries and cream.....feeling quite hurt at this post!!

Wonder if op was your visitor....😮

Oh me, I have a friend coming round on Friday - DP is away so it will just be us “girls” and we’re going to order in pizza. I do have some olives at least.

rosyvalentine · 24/07/2024 01:01

I'd be delighted with that dessert. I love strawberries and cream. Much better than some sugary or processed rubbish! And perfect for summer. But I'm not a big fan of sweet desserts to be fair.

TayceOnToast · 24/07/2024 00:59

This is hilarious

Maybe you’re pissed off because you’re putting too much effort in when you host, not the other way round

Next time your friends come round stick a pizza in the oven and crack open a bottle of wine. You’ll probably be more fun.

Did the invitation specify dinner @Carefreebie (noting username) or food and drinks?
Anyway an hour for a lovely evening with friends is nothing and food is a bonus. Did you get a maccie d on the way home?

Oh well, god forbid your friend should fail to provide you with an ‘exciting’ dessert

Canonlythinkofthisone · 24/07/2024 00:56

If I was your friend, and I read this quite outing post.
I'd tell my ungrateful spoilt ex friend (that's you btw) not to come back.

Coldbeerneverbrokemyheart · 24/07/2024 00:56

Yabu. You go for the company, I’m sure you will cope with your palate not being excited for one course 🙄

You’re just saying the same thing another way. Why do you expect your friend to produce exciting food?

TinDogTavern · 24/07/2024 00:56

You travelled a whole hour? To see people you like? Who prepared a two course meal for you? And both courses were nice?

The BASTARDS. Go No Contact immediately.

AllTipAndNoIceberg · 24/07/2024 00:55

You’re incredibly unreasonable. Strawberries in summer are classic and lovely, simple and unprocessed — but more importantly, it doesn’t matter because you’re supposed to be visiting for the company Confused

redalex261 · 24/07/2024 00:55

I’m just glad not to be doing the dishes…

Overtired345 · 24/07/2024 00:55

YABU. That dessert sounds lovely.

phoenixrosehere · 24/07/2024 00:54

YABU

What is wrong with strawberries and cream?
It’s a nice, simple cool dessert especially considering how warm it was.

BellinghamsBall · 24/07/2024 00:48

Maybe they thought you were going for the company and evening out rather than haute cuisine

Next time just go to a restaurant, because you certainly aren't too bothered about your friend.

SnowFrogJelly · 24/07/2024 00:53

What were you expecting.. crepes suzette?

Freakwave897 · 24/07/2024 00:53

This is a wind up surely?

It really doesn’t matter what she served or how low or high effort it was.

Good manners dictate that you are grateful for her hospitality.

You are there primarily for her company not the quality of the food.

Besides which, strawberries and cream is a perfectly good desert.

Alwaystimeforacupoftea · 24/07/2024 00:52

I think that's fine, I'd prefer that to a very sweet dessert but I buy in everything and never have dinner parties so may not be the best person to ask. I go out a lot though!

SwanSong1 · 24/07/2024 00:52

Get some real problems CakeBiscuit

ZiriForGood · 24/07/2024 00:51

No reason to spoil nice strawberries by baking them into a cake.
