Travelled to friend's house for dinner, just strawberries for desert - AIBU to think it's low effort?

On the weekend my partner and I travelled to a friend's house for dinner. The journey was over an hour by train.

The main course was sausages with nice sides (potato salad, tomato salad, another salad). That was nice.

But desert was just strawberries with some pouring cream.

We had a nice time, but AIBU to feel that the desert was very low effort and unexciting, and should have been more exciting than strawberries given the journey?

When my friend came to mine, I did a 3-course meal, feeling I should make a big effort because of her long journey.

I'd be going for the company, not the food.

Maybe next time take a dessert with you?

COL is hitting a lot of people

Bet your friend didn't realise she'd invited Gordon bloody Ramsay !!

It comes across as though the thing that's bothering you is you feel you have to produce a three course meal, and other people just don't feel the pressure.

The dinner party pressure is very 20th century. I think you need to reflect on why this is a big deal for you, why you want other people - presumably the woman - to slave over a more difficult meal just to impress you.

Strawberries and cream is one of my favourite desserts. I can’t fathom someone feeling let down by them. You are just very strange @Carefreebie

Blackboxbetty · 24/07/2024 06:06

I started reading this thread and thought OP must be on the wind up. But no, there are other people on here who really do judge what they're served for dinner.

I visit my friends for the company. Whatever I'm fed is a bonus.

Gillypie23 · 24/07/2024 05:57

Get over yourself.

RoseMarigoldViolet · 24/07/2024 05:56

This is just awful that you would say this. Surely you went there for the company of your friend?

WhereIsMyLight · 24/07/2024 05:53

Strawberries and cream are the perfect dessert for a warm day in June or July. Especially if the strawberries have been locally grown. We’ve had that several times over the last few weeks. I’d prefer clotted cream to pouring cream but I know clotted cream is more expensive and wouldn’t expect someone to buy expensive stuff to accommodate my preference.

My friend drove 5 hours to see me the other week and I made a spaghetti bolognese. I picked that because most people like spaghetti bolognese and I could make it in advance so I can spend the evening catching up with my friend, who had driven a log way to see me.

Tbh I find the sausage and salad a stranger option. It sounds thrown together.

No issue with strawberries as a dessert

Perhaps it was a fancy chorizo with an array of gourmet salads. Organic strawberries with cream straight from the cow.

I hope the pouring cream was in a jug, and not in a plastic carton 😀🤣

I get quite anxious when "entertaining" and one of the reasons is because of attitudes like this. So many of us are not skilled in the kitchen or have limited budgets. As someone who serves strawberries and cream often as a dessert, this post makes me feel a bit sad.

You travelled a whole hour? To see people you like? Who prepared a two course meal for you? And both courses were nice?

The BASTARDS. Go No Contact immediately.

If you were that bothered why didn’t you eat the bastards ? 😂

MumChp · 24/07/2024 05:21

Next time don't bother to go. Sure you can go to a restaurant in your own town and be happy.

niadainud · 24/07/2024 05:19

It's an unusual way to look at things. So if you'd travelled for several hours you'd expect croque en bouche in the form of a scale model of the Shard, but if your friend just lived round the corner they could get away with Angel Delight? Is that how it works?

PeloMom · 24/07/2024 05:16

Seasonal fruit is a perfect desert especially for dinner (closer to bedtime). What did you expect for that length of a journey?

BettyBardMacDonald · 24/07/2024 05:16

It does sound a bit blah. Something like brownies would have been nice and still simple.

angryoldwoman · 24/07/2024 05:12

You sound high maintenance. Perfectly nice desert. Healthy and tasty.

Shoxfordian · 24/07/2024 05:12

Nothing wrong with strawberries op, lower your expectations

honestyISkind · 24/07/2024 05:00

You sound like hard work. Find friends who also look down on simple, delicious food and stick with them.

pasturesgreen · 24/07/2024 05:00

Wow, with friends like you, OP...Hmm

Wow. DH always tells me I stress too much about dinner for guests and they are coming for the company not for super impressive food.

Sounds like in some cases it really is all about the super impressive food 🤷‍♀️

Right!! Some friend eh

ItsTheGAGGGGGGGG · 24/07/2024 04:52

Sounds very boring tbh may as well have given you a bowl of grapes

LBFseBrom · 24/07/2024 04:27

Strawberries and cream is lovely, nothing wrong with that.

Sausages - depends on the type and the quality. I know there are some top-notch gourmet sausages. Venison sausages for example.

However, going to a friend's house for dinner is more than what you eat, surely? It's an evening with a friend.

It isn't unusual to spend a hour each way travelling for a visit and a train is quicker than a car.

It's a bit mean to moan. Did you have a good time catching up with your friend and were you full up after the meal? Those are the most important things.
