Travelled to friend's house for dinner, just strawberries for desert - AIBU to think it's low effort?

On the weekend my partner and I travelled to a friend's house for dinner. The journey was over an hour by train.

The main course was sausages with nice sides (potato salad, tomato salad, another salad). That was nice.

But desert was just strawberries with some pouring cream.

We had a nice time, but AIBU to feel that the desert was very low effort and unexciting, and should have been more exciting than strawberries given the journey?

When my friend came to mine, I did a 3-course meal, feeling I should make a big effort because of her long journey.

Even if it was a BBQ, I'd hope for burgers, chicken etc as well as sausages and salad? Desserts don't bother me much and I love having fruit salad at someone's house, but usually a few fruit chopped up so a bit more effort.

But strawberries in season are lovely, and some people hate making puddings. If I was like that I'd ask guests to bring dessert. But overall it does sound somewhat low effort food wise.

They could've served cheeses if the pudding (ahem..and main) were modest?
Even from lidls, nothing fancy if there are fiscal issues on their side. That's no effort but still tasty.

Was there enough booze? Was it fun overall, good convo? Was the food you did have tasty and plentiful? Did they have good music? Were the hosts very present, and did everyone feel included? Was their home pleasant?

If yes to most of those I'd let them off. But just know to eat before I go round theirs next time!

Well, that’s very decent of you.

There is nothing about sausages and salads with strawberries and cream after that makes it a kids meal.

Why not? A perfectly balanced meal

babyproblems · 24/07/2024 06:33

I expect the priority for your friend is your company, I think the meal sounds completely nice and lovely between two friends. You sound horribly judgemental and if I was your friend and knew you’d said this I’d be terrified of having you round for as much as a biscuit!!!! I hope not everyone feels like you!

CheeseandOnionCrispFan · 24/07/2024 06:33

As someone who doesn't like puddings generally, I'd have really liked strawberries & cream. Nice, light Summer pudding. Plus, strawberries are a treat - they're expensive to buy enough for 4 people! Much nicer than some heavy, stodgey pudding in my opinion. The first course sounds much worse.

BananaLambo · 24/07/2024 06:32

Strawberries and cream is the perfect summer dessert.

I once went to dinner at my friends and she served poached pear for dessert. It had taken us 78 minutes to get there because a lorry had shed its load on the M6. Which I suppose wasn't my friends fault. But still.

If I was your friend, and I read this quite outing post.
I'd tell my ungrateful spoilt ex friend (that's you btw) not to come back.

Me too.

After sausages and salad, a few straws floating in cream in the icing on a piss-poor cake!
Unless I was told 'dinner' (evening meal) was going to be in effect, a kids meal, I would have eaten beforehand or had food in when I got home
Those food offerings were not 'dinner', or certainly not what I would serve if I had invited a guest.

This

You travelled a whole hour? To see people you like? Who prepared a two course meal for you? And both courses were nice?

The BASTARDS. Go No Contact immediately.

😆

Surely the main reason for going is to spend time with your friends. I'd be fine with that.

ANiceBigCupOfTea · 24/07/2024 06:25

If I go to friends' houses its always about the company, and as an adult there's something really nice about having a meal made for you.
And the fact that a catch up with friends is more about a good laugh and catch up over a glass of wine.

ebadame · 24/07/2024 06:25

It's not a fancy restaurant!!

Boopbeepbeepboop · 24/07/2024 06:24

You didn't go to a restaurant, you went to a friend's house. Presumably, primarily for her company. Get over yourself

KimberleyClark · 24/07/2024 06:23

Nothing wrong with lovely British seasonal strawberries as a summer dessert. I might have served some luxury ice cream with them as well, but they were fine with just cream.

Thevelvelletes · 24/07/2024 06:21

Your friend must hate you for giving you strawberries.

HungryWombat · 24/07/2024 06:21

I'm wanting strawberries and cream now. I'll get some later this week! And yes it was Wimbledon recently wasn't it which makes me think strawberries. We used to have this for a treat pudding when I was little.

Not sure what's wrong with sausages and a selection of sides either.

I'm another one now wondering what friends have been thinking of they've come over for an evening!

Smigglewriggle · 24/07/2024 06:18

If someone cut up and served me fruit I’d genuinely be delighted.

supersop60 · 24/07/2024 06:18

Strawberries 'n' cream is a thing, though, isn't it?
At Wimbledon they charge a small fortune for it, and hundreds of people partake. And I bet they travelled more than an hour...

midgetastic · 24/07/2024 06:13

Kids lunch? No just a proper dinner - it's a home not a tv programme

Greedy people abound

DoAClassicCamel · 24/07/2024 06:12

Maybe if there is a next time you take dessert with you. Alternatively invite her to yours and open a tin of peaches for pudding, see how she likes an unexciting low effort last course.

TheRakesTale · 24/07/2024 06:12

Chucklit · 24/07/2024 01:21

Could've been artic roll or jelly 🤷🏻‍♀️
Give yourself a shake, you're being pretentious

No, the OP is not. They expected an adult meal, not a kid's lunch

Peclet · 24/07/2024 06:11

Seems like a nice summer meal.

COL is real and so perhaps that was a factor.

Perhaps take off the judgey pants and enjoy life a bit more.

TheRakesTale · 24/07/2024 06:11

Monty27 · 24/07/2024 01:19

@Carefreebie it's dessert btw. Not desert. Couldn't resist.

Actually, it is pudding

TheRakesTale · 24/07/2024 06:10

ThePoshUns · 24/07/2024 01:13

I'd be more than happy with strawberries and cream.
What a poor version of a friend you are.
