Travelled to friend's house for dinner, just strawberries for desert - AIBU to think it's low effort?

On the weekend my partner and I travelled to a friend's house for dinner. The journey was over an hour by train.

The main course was sausages with nice sides (potato salad, tomato salad, another salad). That was nice.

But desert was just strawberries with some pouring cream.

We had a nice time, but AIBU to feel that the desert was very low effort and unexciting, and should have been more exciting than strawberries given the journey?

When my friend came to mine, I did a 3-course meal, feeling I should make a big effort because of her long journey.

I actually really dislike strawberries...they are probably one of my least favourite fruits. Raspberries are far nicer than strawberries imo. As for cream...I never seen the appeal...ice cream would be marginally better.

''a bowl of strawberries very unexciting'' just like you! What a bore! Grow up!

Imnotarestaurant · 24/07/2024 09:40

We chose to have strawberries and cream as one of our desserts at our wedding because I think perfectly ripe, in season English strawberries are delicious 😋

Congratulations to you on being a superior human being

@Comedycook

there was nothing wrong with what @midgetastic said!!

soundsys · 24/07/2024 09:38

Strawberries and cream is a great summer dessert! I'd be very happy with that

(I thought you were going to say JUST strawberries - no cream - and then I might have agreed with you a bit more 😁)

Wow. DH always tells me I stress too much about dinner for guests and they are coming for the company not for super impressive food.

Sounds like in some cases it really is all about the super impressive food 🤷‍♀️

@minipie

your DH is right!!

FRIENDS for the company!!

judgemental twats for a critique of the meal.

I'd much rather have real food like strawberries than a shop bought desert full of crap thank you

Congratulations to you on being a superior human being

It's their house, you were guests of theirs.

Their house is not a restaurant or cafe.

Be grateful for what you got instead of whining like a 2 year old.

Londonrach1 · 24/07/2024 09:36

Perfect desert. Yabu. It's what we always go as a family and that my parents and sister for guests. No one ever complained. Glad you not my friend. Id have done pizza and picky bits for main meal. Easy so you can spend longer with friends and chatting

Wishimaywishimight · 24/07/2024 09:35

So the longer the journey, the more elaborate the dessert required?

That's a bit crap imo...I'd be quite disappointed. You can buy such good quality desserts nowadays in the supermarkets. Lovely lemon tarts, cheesecakes, tiramisu....she didn't have to actually make anything necessarily

Hillarious · 24/07/2024 09:33

Were they British strawberries, and had your friend taken the trouble to hull them and then squish them? Squishing is the only way to eat strawberries.

fashionqueen0123 · 24/07/2024 09:33

Well to start with it’s a dessert not a desert! Make the effort to get the spelling right :)

Blimey, I have often done a simple fruit salad for a dinner in the summer. Strawberries and kiwis for example. Would be really hurt to be slagged off on Mumsnet about this.

Have you ever seen the episode of Friday night dinner when the mum serves up fruit salad instead of their usual crumble 😂

Holy F - if I knew my friend was judging me like this…..I wouldn’t want to know them much longer. Gratitude in life is everything and there is an old saying…. we loose what we are not grateful for, like good friends and company (oh and nourishing food). Maybe focus on that OP.

Lalalol · 24/07/2024 09:27

You sound horrific. Surprised you were invited in the first place

MellersSmellers · 24/07/2024 09:24

There could be a whole host of reasons she did a (yes) simple but nice dessert - didn't have time to prepare something more complex, isn't a confident dessert cook, thought you were a good friend who wouldn't judge....Give her some slack

2catsandhappy · 24/07/2024 09:21

Were they homegrown fruit?

Just for the record, if anyone wants to serve me a meal I haven't had to plan, shop, pack, prep, cook, clean up, serve and clear away, I would consider it a banquet and be thrilled, thankful and appreciative.

Did you take flowers or wine?

Words like entitled and snob are whirling through my mind. I bet cold hard cash the next dinner guests @Carefreebie has will be told this story, "...you won't imagine what she served<holds breath><pearl clutch> strawberries and cream!"

TartanJambo · 24/07/2024 09:20

If I had a friend like you, you wouldn't be my friend anymore.
I don't go to people's houses to be fed a nice meal 🙄 I go to see them and enjoy their company. Any effort they go to to cook for me, I appreciate it.

I think it's a generation thing there's an huge sense of entitlement for absolutely everything, it's quite sad really.

Wait, isn’t it supposed to be Millennials and Gen Z who are lazy, rude and entitled? Somehow I don’t think they go around moaning about their friend serving a ‘low effort boring’ dessert.

Dontcallmescarface · 24/07/2024 09:18

Not much of a friend are you?

Bumcake · 24/07/2024 09:17

That’s not a long journey and that is an acceptable dessert. You are a miserable guest.

Whilst I’m being so helpful, the usual expression is ‘strawberries and cream’, no need to add pouring.
