The "baby is too cold!" Comment

Why does it bother me so much? Maybe there's an underlying feeling of not properly knowing my baby's need and someone else has had to step in. BUT I know she's not cold! I have a 7 week old, and there has been a heatwave this weekend, yet when I've come into the room with my in-laws I've repeatedly found baby girl wrapped in a blanket, I've made it clear it's not needed and that she's quite warm in general. I should just ignore it, but does this bother anyone else?

You cannot spoil a newborn. They need you all day every day. You don’t leave them to cry as they can’t yet self settle. The more love the better.
When you’re not holding her where do you put her? It sounds like she could be windy if she doesn’t want to lay down? Will she sit in a little bouncy seat?

Also just wanted to add to @Twelve8Ts comment, it can be VERY normal for newborns to want to be with you 24/7 however for us it was a sign baby was in pain (tension in neck) and slight silent reflux. Every time I put him down he’d cry. It might be worth thinking about

Drives me mad. Awful for their immune systems to be overheated constantly. We always kept my DD cool, she's 3 now and last night she was in the outdoor cold water bath with my DH absolutely loving it. Literally wants to be outside whatever the weather. I would tell my in laws straight that it's downright dangerous to wrap baby up in a blanket in a heatwave!

ColaColaCube · 31/07/2024 13:08

I got told by a distant relative that my son was going to get hypothermia because I wouldn’t put him in his coat in the car seat. I tried to explain coats shouldn’t be used in car seat as there is research it is unsafe.

The worst comments are the “is mummy freezing you!”

BurbageBrook · 31/07/2024 13:05

@Misunderstoodmama you cannot spoil a newborn. It is not possible. In fact you cannot spoil a child of any age with love and affection. Follow your instincts and cuddle your baby... And encourage your idiot DH to do some reading on infant development.

Greenvelvetdress · 31/07/2024 12:58

@Misunderstoodmama I've been using a sling in this weather. I take my t-shirt off and just have my bra on (in the house obviously) and you can just have baby in nappy. Your body against theirs actually regulated their temperature and slings are used loads in really hot countries so your baby should be fine x

Misunderstoodmama · 31/07/2024 12:43

Do you think it's a bad idea to wear a baby sling in the heat?? Because it's really hot - I'm really hot therefore she must be too, but that adds to my question of what to do when I can't put her down?

I had a baby in August 2003 very hot heatwave ! My mum had got baby a shawl that she loved so much and insisted on wrapping him in it , this combined with me not being able to get him to latch on meant he went floppy. Luckily my midwife was just round the corner and came and got him to latch but I can't believe she did that or that I let her! I was young but really don't need blankets in this heat.

IWillBeWaxingAnOwl · 31/07/2024 11:58

@Misunderstoodmama you get things done by having a sling or.carrier - she sleeps cosy on you, you potter.about doing what you want

FlyingHighFlyingLow · 31/07/2024 11:39

I have this. Now 7mo but always why no hat/socks/jumper etc. He's a warm baby! Literally a little radiator and always has been.

My usually lovely and well meaning MIL was very concerned about the socks in particular. Left him with her for a few hours last week as I needed to go to an appointment, came back to baby in just his nappy. She was checking him and he was sweating so just kept taking layers off, she couldn't believe it but she was sensible to go off checking his back/chest etc rather than insisting on covering him up. I know she's actually sensible hence feeling comfortable to leave him with her. She acknowledged he'd probably been like that from the start and apologised 🤣. Genuinely she'd been checking him with a thermometer incase of temp but he was fine, just warm as per.

DragonFly98 · 31/07/2024 11:32

Tell them cold babies cry hot babies die.

Sahara123 · 31/07/2024 11:14

Ergh , nothing changes ! 36 years ago I used to carry mine on my front. I’m a very hot person so they'd get lots of my body heat . I still remember people telling me they needed a hat or whatever, including random strangers !

Misunderstoodmama · 31/07/2024 11:11

Thank you! Just realised I posted this in the wrong place (still getting the hang of the website) thank you happiertimesahead I guess my question is also how do I get anything done😅

Yes this comment is so bloody annoying! Have they met a baby before?? They all love pulling socks off but me being a negligent mother is apparently more likely a scenario

Also babies have bad circulation. Hands and feet feeling cold doesn't mean the baby is cold overall

Hi mamas, so I have an 8 week old baby girl. As a new mama after a tragic stillbirth I am aware and trying not to spoil my baby (but it's too hard not too!) but as a newbie I am questioning everything I'm doing..how much attention I should give to her crys, she's crying unless I'm playing with her, or feeding her, she wants all my attention. My husband says I respond too quickly and that should let her cry a little bit to see if she settles
What advice do you have

Okay, you need to hear this loud and clear YOU CANNOT SPOIL A NEWBORN. They need you to respond to them. Crying is their only method of communication to let you know they are hungry, tired, cold, have done a poo or need a cuddle. My DC's spent most of the first 3 months attached to me - they are not spoilt children because of it. Read up on the fourth trimester.
I am so sorry for your loss and enjoy your baby 💗

They are referring to the saying 'cold babies cry, hot babies die'.
I think the older generations tend to be like this OP. I've rolled my eyes so many times at my parents/ in-laws commenting on my children being 'freeezziiinnggg' 🙄 Ignore them, trust your gut.

Thank you, yes I was but I didn’t want to sound too scary! But very true

Misunderstoodmama · 23/07/2024 23:03

I didn't know they don't cry when they're hot, she has been quieter than usual, that's scary

Ponoka7 · 23/07/2024 23:28

It took me a while to get out of the habit of wanting to wrap my GC up more than they were. We lived in less insulated houses, with inadequate heating etc, so our babies were more covered. It isn't always meant with malice. It was only when Anne Diamond's baby died of SIDs that the message was put out about it being more dangerous to be too hot. There was still the idea that you got a cold because you were cold. Explain it to them and make it clear that it isn't negotiable.

amispeakingintongues · 23/07/2024 23:27

Biffbaff · 23/07/2024 20:30

I get this all the time but via comments to the baby about their feet being cold. Yes, it's because she pulls her socks off! Every time!

ChimneySweepLiverpool · 23/07/2024 23:26

This is so common and so stupid. I don't know why the older generation love to overheat babies that aren't even theirs

Those nosy people should try keep a hat or socks on a baby, an impossible task

Bohranbiddy · 23/07/2024 23:18

My in laws tried that with me when my child was only born, it was the start of a string of put downs which ended up with post natal depression for me and a miserable maternity leave. Nip the nonsense in the bud and stand up for yourself x

Aquamarine1029 · 23/07/2024 23:05

It is FAR more dangerous for a baby to be too hot than too cool. Your in-laws are daft, and I wouldn't be leaving her with them.

Misunderstoodmama · 23/07/2024 23:03

Twelve8Ts · 23/07/2024 22:08

Cold babies cry, overheated babies don’t! I can’t stand seeing babies that are SO wrapped up, there’s no need. I have a 4 month old that has been sleeping in just a vest over the past week.

My 4 month old has been topless throughout the heatwave. He was getting so hot and UK houses seem to be made to trap heat.

I also only swaddled to keep baby still and calm otherwise they get hot.

Sounds like they are being abit controlling.
