The "baby is too cold!" Comment

Why does it bother me so much? Maybe there's an underlying feeling of not properly knowing my baby's need and someone else has had to step in. BUT I know she's not cold! I have a 7 week old, and there has been a heatwave this weekend, yet when I've come into the room with my in-laws I've repeatedly found baby girl wrapped in a blanket, I've made it clear it's not needed and that she's quite warm in general. I should just ignore it, but does this bother anyone else?

Totally agree.

I would be saying babies cry if they’re too hot or too cold .. not one or the other.

I think telling parents that hot babies will cry is dangerous in my opinion.

We know that overheating is a cause of SIDS. Babies die in their sleep because they get too hot and get too unwell to cry for help.

For example, if you was to tell a new mum that hot babies cry, they may think oh I’ll leave them in this baby grow and sleeping bag as @Unknownsecret told me she’ll cry if she’s hot. But research shows babies are at risk of dying in their sleep if too hot, so the advice you gave this new mother could be very dangerous

Totally agree.

Nope definitely not an apology - no need for one. I also didn’t call you stupid, inaccurate and dangerous - I said your comment was stupid, inaccurate and dangerous - and my view still stands 🤷‍♀️ hot babies do cry 🤷‍♀️

@DazedAndConfused321 @Twelve8Ts @ColaColaCube
My point still stands - hot babies DO cry. Parents can very easily interpret this to mean their crying baby must be cold, best put more blankets/clothes on .. when actually they’re already too hot. It’s been pointed out this poster actually meant ‘cold babies cry, hot babies die’ .. but her statement does not say or mean this!

I once saw a mum in a cafe with a screaming baby, and I mean screaming. Her friend asked if the baby’s nappy needed changing - her reply was ‘no it’s Pampers, I put in on this morning so it doesn’t need changing til bedtime’ 😮😮 She interpreted their baby dry/stay dry overnight advertising as the nappy is good for 12 hours! 🥺🥺 Equally, the hot baby statement is misleading and can be misinterpreted 🤷‍♀️

I’ll take that as an apology for being called stupid, inaccurate and dangerous 😊

gingergiraffe · 31/07/2024 15:05

I have some beautiful photos of my two sons born in May and August when a heatwave was on. They are in just a nappy and vest, in the garden under a sunshade in their baby carriers in the shade. Really happpy and comfortable. They wore very few clothes for the first few weeks of their lives. So easy to overdress a baby in this hot weather.

SD1978 · 31/07/2024 14:47

I wouldn't be able to help myself- I'd insist PIL's both need to be securely wrapped in a blanket as well if they are feeling 'the cold' that bad, since the circulation does worsen after a certain age.......

This is so common and so stupid. I don't know why the older generation love to overheat babies that aren't even theirs

Those nosy people should try keep a hat or socks on a baby, an impossible task

I am of the older generation and think the opposite! DD2 has a new baby and I reminded her that 40+ years ago when DD1 was also born during a heatwave that I let her sleep in just a nappy. The response was a photo of new baby wearing ... a cardigan and little hat while lower half was wrapped in a cotton blanket!

yhk · 31/07/2024 14:17

At 8 weeks of age, an infant's brain isn't developed enough to understand that they need to cry to get your attention. Therefore it is impossible to 'spoil' a newborn.

Newborns cry for a reason, whether it be hunger, dirty nappy, comfort or illness. They need to be seen to right away.

The idea of leaving a newborn to cry to see if they settle themselves is illogical and unfair on the newborn.

A load of old bollocks.

Mammma91 · 31/07/2024 14:17

YANBU. It’s 34 degrees in my main room. My in laws walked in and demanded I put socks on my 4 month old. Told no hes too hot. Que a 10 minute long rant about babies getting cold easy. I could’ve screamed. I have a 5 year old .. who I birthed in the middle of a heat wave .. I think we’re quite capable of meeting our own babies needs!!!

Calphurnia6 · 31/07/2024 14:15

Ah yes, the unsolicited and often incorrect advice given to parents of babies. I remember a family member telling me I should breastfeed LESS during a heatwave. I also remember being chastised by a stranger in the park because it was a bit chilly and my son kept pulling his woolly hat off. Eventually I just ignored people and did what I knew was best, but it took a little while to find my flow.

Re your husband. You will not spoil a baby (or toddler or indeed a child of any age) by responding to their cries. I had a few people suggest this to me, but it felt totally against my natural instincts and I have absolutely no regrets in refusing to conform to this line of thinking.

Overheated babies DO cry! Thats a stupid, inaccurate, dangerous comment!

Yes and no. If slightly hot they do cry, but if they get too hot they get lethargic and in some sad cases become extremely unwell / fatal. Where as if a baby is a cold they will let you know about it.

For example a cold sleeping baby will wake upset, where as a baby overheating will become too unwell to wake and cry alerting parents

Iloveeverycat · 31/07/2024 13:49

When my babies were that age sleeping in our room we had a room thermometer. It always felt cold to us at the correct temperature. We used to call our bedroom the fridge.

Dangerous? Overheated newborn babies become more lethargic and less responsive, meaning they are unable too alert you that something is wrong. If they are too cold they will let you know. OP is talking about her baby during these warm summer days, not a cold winters night.
Have you heard the saying ‘Cold babies cry, warm babies die’?

Overheated babies DO cry! Thats a stupid, inaccurate, dangerous comment!

They are more likely to cry when cold, than when hot. This is because they become lethargic when hot.

Unknownsecret · 31/07/2024 13:42

Twelve8Ts · 23/07/2024 22:08

Cold babies cry, overheated babies don’t! I can’t stand seeing babies that are SO wrapped up, there’s no need. I have a 4 month old that has been sleeping in just a vest over the past week.

Overheated babies DO cry! Thats a stupid, inaccurate, dangerous comment!

I didn't know they don't cry when they're hot, she has been quieter than usual, that's scary

Hot babies DO cry … that’s a stupid, inaccurate comment from that poster!

DazedAndConfused321 · 31/07/2024 13:32

I told my mother in law "Cold babies cry, warm babies die" That shut her up. Stand up for your baby!

changedusernameforthis1 · 31/07/2024 13:28

My DM did this with my eldest. I got so annoyed with her constantly telling me he was cold when I knew he wasn't, and then wrapping him up whenever I wasn't around.
Eventually I turned to her one day and said that if she bundled him up once more in this heat, I would bundle her up too. That actually workerd 😂

Twelve8Ts · 31/07/2024 13:26

ColaColaCube · 31/07/2024 13:14

Also just wanted to add to @Twelve8Ts comment, it can be VERY normal for newborns to want to be with you 24/7 however for us it was a sign baby was in pain (tension in neck) and slight silent reflux. Every time I put him down he’d cry. It might be worth thinking about

Yes and could also be tongue tie if not wanting to lay down / has tension in the neck. My second had tongue tie and NEVER wanted to lay down, unless on me, because tongue tied babies take in a lot of air when feeding which leads to lots of discomfort.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 31/07/2024 13:18

No way baby is cold in these temperatures. Better for wake up cold than from overheating. That applies even in winter never mind a hot summer.
