How can I tell if I have an internal monologue?

I learned recently from my teen that ~ 30 to 50% of people don't have an “inner voice.”

I’m sure I do. As I type I hear my voice in my head. But am I just assuming I can? I’m confused. So maybe I am in the minority of people who don’t have an inner monologue. When I read I say it a loud in my head I think.

Please can anyone familiar with this topic elaborate.

Mine never shuts up telling me what to do/reminding me to do things. I have been caught answering it back out loud a few times(angrily) 😂

Inthetropics · 24/07/2024 00:45

I don't have an inner monologue and I have no idea how people who do manage to live with it!

Franjipanl8r · 24/07/2024 00:41

I definitely don’t have this monologue, I think visually like a movie or picture book. When I read I’m pretty slow - thinking in words or conversations would be exhausting for me!

It has blown my mind that not everyone thinks like this. I just assumed inside everyone’s brain was a silent movie of their thoughts!

HollyBerri · 24/07/2024 00:41

if something is annoying me i often think it through as if I am posting in aibu or writing to an agony aunt. I then formulate replies in my head.
Does anyone else do this?i have an inner dialogue- DH doesn’t. He reads out loud and moves his lips when he doesn’t.

GoodieMcTwoshoes · 24/07/2024 00:32

If you can 'hear' it in your head then you have one. I'dve thought most people have one. It narrates to you thoughts about memories, current situations, future plans etc.

Oh I've always wondered about this too. I've constantly got internal chatter going on as well as whatever song is my current earworm. One thing I do a lot is repearedly go over conversations or rehearse future conversations. I'm quite a worrier and something that I worry about is saying the wrong thing. I often wonder what a healthy inner monologue sounds like - mine definitely isn't!

Yes, practicing future conversations. I do this a lot. I'm not good at thinking on the spot or coming up with answers off the hoof so I find myself practicing what I'm going to say often.
I also find that my inner voice is very critical of me and rarely has anything nice to say to me. It will often say nice things about others, but never me.

Not sure about this. I don’t have an internal monologue but I do read an awful lot, for work and pleasure, and writing is a big part of my job. Language is central to my identity but it’s more of an expression of how I think rather than central to the construction of the thought itself if that makes sense.

I have no inner monologue and like reading too.
i’m a pretty chilled person (no gad). I daydream a lot but in pictures and feelings like a movie. When I read it’s like watching a movie not listening to an audio book.

Bungler · 24/07/2024 00:25

I have a particular voice which goes through my head when I’m reading posts on here. Everyone has the same voice. It is a different voice to the voices in my head when I am reading other things. I very rarely post but as I write this I’m also using the mumsnet voice.

OnAndOnAndonAgain · 24/07/2024 00:24

Yes it's constant and has been as long as I remember, can't picture things in my head though without a lot of effort!

thaegumathteth · 24/07/2024 00:22

I don't have an IM that I can hear at all but I kind of see the words all jumbling together. I have anxiety and when it's bad the letters are all crashing into each other.

I am always thinking though and worrrying but as I say I kind of see them.
I can't see things in my minds eye but I know for example what a red apple looks like but I can't envision one? I'm not sure though if I'm describing or a amusing the same thing differently to others iyswim?

I remember being about 7/8 abc my dad was away for a couple of days I was so upset because I couldn't remember what he looked like.

Adatewithmyself · 24/07/2024 00:18

Wow, fascinating!

So those with an inner monologue, do you hear your own voice and the timbre of your actual voice in your head? Like a person speaking in your ear?

I thought i had an inner monologue but now realise I don’t: I’m in the “thought clouds” group.

I also absorb chunks/paragraphs of words, read really fast and work as a writer/editor - mentioning as this is coming up.

My brain has lots of thoughts but I don’t hear my own voice, it’s more of a neutral wondering.

If I think of an upcoming event, I will have a pre-visual of me doing it, eg like “Yorkshire to parents” I’ll imagine driving to Yorkshire. I also “see” a calendar of the year ahead unfolding in my mind (anyone else?!)

Can someone describe what the monologue is like? Is it “and now I’m cleaning my teeth, and now I’m going downstairs” is everything narrated?

Mine never stops from morning to night. Ever.
I talk myself to sleep every night. It's exhausting to be honest!

Do you tell yourself to shut up? I have to listen to the radio

Oh wow, my mind is BLOWN. I didn’t even realise an internal monologue was a thing!! I don’t have one.

Similarly to @SquitMcJit, I absorb the words but don’t necessarily hear them. I know their meaning in my head but there’s no-one narrating this. Writing is also a significant part of my job and I just know when words flow and when they don’t. I can make a voice in my head to read it back, but it doesn’t happen subconsciously. Often I use Word’s Read Aloud function to hear it being read back to me.

If I remember it’s bin night and I need to put the bins out, I see a picture of the bins and have an internal understanding to remember to put the bins out later.

There is absolutely no narrative going on in my mind at other times. The idea that this is normal to everyone is absolutely mind blowing. To me, that just sounds overwhelmingly chaotic.

This is so interesting!

Yep, exactly the same here- thank you for setting it out as I couldn't think of how to explain it!

DH tells me how he has a non stop internal world, and particularly the thing about rehearsing and re-rehearsing conversations 🤯 I get this on a logical level but it sounds pretty tiring.

I wonder if there is a correlation between internal monologues and mental illness or anxiety. I have a constant inner monologue and often worry or feel anxious or paranoid. My partner doesn't have one and doesn't suffer with any of those and is a lot more chilled than me.

I wonder the same thing. I wish my inner monologue would go away sometimes because it’s constant and always worrying.

Turtletumy · 23/07/2024 18:37

I asked a friend about this as she has no internal monologue.
She says she sees things as pictures as opposed to words, I asked what happens when she reads and she says she sees the words in her head rather than hearing them.
As someone with an internal monologue that is always chattering away it was fascinating as she couldn’t imagine having an internal monologue and had no idea that there was such a thing.
I asked her about how she solved a problem as I talk ( and argue ) with myself in my head.
She writes it down 🤷‍♀️

Gosh. Interesting. Mine is like I'm constantly talking to myself.

VivaLaSpag · 23/07/2024 22:44

I hear absolutely nothing, and in fact if I was to sit like that with my eyes shut and didn’t nod off then it’s like my thoughts switch off all together…..but I become hyper aware of my surroundings and physical being. Like I can’t go into myself….I sort of go out!

What if you thought ‘did I put the bins out?’ or ‘oh bloody hell, gbetter set the alarm.’ What do you hear when you think it whilst your eyes are shut?

whiteboardking · 23/07/2024 23:57

Fascinating. I need this work out what I actually have

OperationGoldenDawn · 23/07/2024 23:57

sometimes the voices just happen, its like your doing x and then its yea so to speak

ClickClack300 · 23/07/2024 23:56

Zanatdy · 23/07/2024 18:24

i read that in my head and I’m also reading this in my head as a I type so I’m an inner voice person. How odd people type and don’t speak it in their head, well odd to me, not odd in general

It is odd in general though. Anyone that can read a book in silence has an internal monologue.

Rfthyhuj · 23/07/2024 23:55

Orangeandgold · 23/07/2024 22:39

I cane across this stat a few years ago.

It’s not about reading in your head. It’s about having an inner voice that has a life of its own.

If you are sitting in silence, with nothing. Your eyes closed. Do you end up having a conversation in your head or do you hear absolutely nothing?

I wish my inner voice could be quiet sometimes. I always wondered if it was my conscious- then realised I just overthink.

I can do both? Just sat in silence, eyes closed. I can hear nothing and think nothing or I can think to myself ‘well…’

Fascinating discussion.

This is so, so mind blowing. So if you think ‘this person on Mumsnet is being unreasonable’, how do you think it if you don’t hear in your head ‘yeah I think that’s unreasonable?’

Emotionalsupporthamster · 23/07/2024 23:53

But it’s not a monologue if it’s not as if you’re hearing thoughts in words. It’s more a shifting set of fuzzy clouds that are thoughts (for me).

Rfthyhuj · 23/07/2024 23:50

SquitMcJit · 23/07/2024 21:56

I don’t have an inner monologue and didn’t realise for a long time that others do. I’m thinking lots of random things all the time, but I don’t hear a voice narrating anything.

When I read I’m reading really fast (I didn’t realise that until someone tested me and said I couldn’t be reading and taking it in). I just sort of absorb the words - if I consciously think about it and slow down and sound it out then it’s very slow and not as enjoyable.

I write in my work and again don’t hear a voice sounding it out. I’m a natural proof-reader and my eye can just see things in the page (I will now obviously have made loads of mistakes in this post after saying that…)

Surely thinking the thoughts is an inner monologue? The monologue is your thoughts.

greenwoodentablelegs · 23/07/2024 20:16

No internal monologue and no anxiety here!

recently my brain has been completely empty, due to meditation and cutting out stressors. I have to think to think of things. It’s quite nice

But you do think, so how do you not have an internal monologue? Even to think ‘I have no internal monologue’, must mean you think it and therefore ‘hear’ yourself speaking that thought in your head?

Userxyd · 23/07/2024 23:33

@Nursingadvice I hear my own voice mostly, reading out my own words like now as I'm typing. Although sometimes I'll take the opposite stance and ask myself a question perhaps to verify how I feel about something, and then both voices are my own discussing contrasting sides. Sometimes it's spontaneous thoughts being aired in my brain, other times I kind of know what I'm about to say, so there's clearly more background non verbal thinking informing the narrating voice in my head.
