To worry for Kamala Harris - woman, half black, half Asian, married to a Jewish man

I really really hope her and her family have the strongest mental resilience for the racism, misogyny and anti-semitism which will come towards her and them, just for the crime of running for president.

Yes she’s been a bit of a wallflower and we haven’t seen much of her whilst VP but maybe that will change now she’s out on her own. She’s had a successful career as a lawyer and seems nice.

Personally I’m going to avoid listening/watching American politics in the run up to the election as I think I’d be too anxious. Many people seem to treat politics like a football rivalry these days. But if she were to win, it would be so inspiring for so many girls around the world.

Agree but watching Trump try and debate against her would be hilarious. He wouldn’t stand a chance!

I can't wait - Trump is now the old slow guy who can't string a sentence together.

I hope he's poohing himself, now that he doesn't have Biden to make him feel better about himself.

Women come into their own when they are freed from the shackles of men getting in their way. I hope Kamala is that woman.

Ive just heard the name Gavin Newsom as a good match as her running mate. Only trouble is he is also in California and they tend to want a greater geographic spread between the candidate and running mate. Interesting times though...

Reproductive rights are a key ballot issue this time. Roe vs Wade has divided the country. Trump has a string of sexual abuse allegations and now a adjudication against him, showing he doesn't respect women. Plus there's more lurking in the Epstein files to come out. It would be politically savvy of her to focus on reaching the female vote by making the connection.

This. A lot of women, particularly younger women, will vote for her.

Shaketherombooga · 22/07/2024 18:46

She’s been a DA and Vice -President son reckon is pretty robust!

Parker231 · 22/07/2024 18:45

MrsSkylerWhite · 22/07/2024 12:21

She is no wallflower! She’s a highly effective prosecutor.

Trump will refuse to debate against her because he knows she’d wipe the floor with him.

She’ll be well able to cope with the misogyny and racism that comes with being a very effective operator in the public eye.

Agree but watching Trump try and debate against her would be hilarious. He wouldn’t stand a chance!

Nancy Pelosi has just endorsed Kamala Harris - a pivotal moment, she is very influential.

An odd comment given that she was elected (and not hired) to many of the prominent offices she had held in her career (District Attorney of California, Attorney General of California, US Senator).

Her being appointed VP is an outlier in an impressive career.

I’m not even a fan of her but yes she is well qualified.

There’s always an excuse for racists to claim a certain minority isn’t competent, unless that minority happens to be someone like Candace owens or Suella Braverman who dance for racists basically.

A significant part of racism is making the bar so much higher for people of colour and coming down on them so much harder if they make any mistake.

Obama had to be damn near flawless and then we got sloppy Trump 😑

Heard Nigel Farage on LBC this morning saying he didn't think people would vote for a "black African woman"

He's such a fucking revolting specimen, worse than his NF name sakes

Edited

Tbh it's a fact that the majority of people who wont vote for her is due to her being a woman and being black. He's just confirming the reality of the situation. Unpleasant, yes. But it's factually true. Not necessarily saying he wouldn't vote for her because of that, but knows some Americans won't.

daisychain01 · 22/07/2024 18:42

GrannyRose15 · 22/07/2024 17:16

This isn’t being racist. It is saying that alot of Americans are racist misogynists. What do you think? Will half of Americans vote for this woman?

Nigel Farage not racist?

Give me strength....

She’s a terrible candidate. People like her in public life undermine the achievements of truly talented people from non white backgrounds, through being diversity hires.

And yet when Obama ran for office the African-American population of America came out in their millions to vote for him.

The trouble is the people who voted for Obama probably reconciled themselves that "oh well, at least he's a man". That's not to take away from Obama as a person because I admire him greatly, to break through the embedded prejudice he has had all his life.

KH has being a woman and being black as two sticks to beat her with and hold her back.

Repulsive and unthinkable in 21st century, but it's the way things are in US.

It's a tragedy that an educated, capable woman is held back because of who she is, not based on her capabilities.

i think she's been in the background because she wasn't clear on her role and where she could add value. As normal the limelight, the attention and the power is with the white males. I hope now she has the opportunity to blossom, to grow in stature and build her brand.

I wish her well and am watching intently over the coming months to see how things go for her.

Mayorq · 22/07/2024 18:37

Now she's been called a crazy cat lady who isn't qualified to be president because she never had kids by trumps running mate on that preppy nazi tuckers show.

So she's definitely been the victim misogynistic abuse today

Rebusa · 22/07/2024 18:34

And shut up about “diversity hire” the same people who trot this out say nothing of the many incompetent and useless white men and women in senior positions.

Look at the state of trump for example?! You think a black man with children here and there from multiple women, and various ex wives and accusations of sexual assault could’ve got as far as him?

So much evidence to show being male, white, straight or rich/well-connected or all of these (like trump) increase your chances of progression and hiring across all industries but yet there’s all this focus on so called “diversity hires not being qualified” 🙄

Rebusa · 22/07/2024 18:30

Bucees · 22/07/2024 12:35

she hasn’t been the victim of racism or misogyny so far, so there’s no reason to suppose that will change.

I would put money on the both of these being completely incorrect
She most likely has been the victim of racism or misogyny as she is not white or male
and no reason to suppose that will change I think you are very naive if you dont think she will get more abuse and hate by standing

I would love for her to win!

This. Absolute nonsense to say she’s not faced misogynoir or sexism. I mean for goodness sake even Michelle Obama had that and she wasn’t even running herself .

@GrannyRose15 "Many black Americans refer to themselves as African Americans. Don’t know whether she does but this is what is meant by the term"

The ones who aren't African American don't.

I means it’s crazy shes half Indian/half Jamaican which makes ger biracial! Not an African woman

Krampers · 22/07/2024 18:09

ilovemoney · 22/07/2024 17:17

She’s very mediocre, her sex and race have advantaged her in her career above her capabilities. If she were white and male she just wouldn’t be where she is. She isn’t a good speaker and seems to regularly get her arse handed to her. She can’t keep staff and is rumoured to be a bully. Just saying.

I take it you have the sane sentiment for any POC in a highly ranked position? You think that about your black physician right?

Echobelly · 22/07/2024 18:00

The fact is, Trump is now the 'stale, old' candidate - the line of attack he's been using against Biden. The GOP might have cause to regret that now.

WildLemur · 22/07/2024 17:54

I like her. I don't think she's the best possible candidate (in a world where Biden had kept his word and not tried to run this cycle, I don't think she's have won the primary) but she's definitely an improvement on Biden.

I also think there's a lot to be said for having a woman as the candidate in the context of reproductive rights, which should be a central issue for the Dems.

StripedPiggy · 22/07/2024 17:45

Harris seems like a decent person and, although I am not optimistic about her chances, I wish her luck.

Assuming she will be the Democrat candidate, that gives the Republicans a dilemma to tackle. She ticks so many identity boxes (female, black, Indian, married to a Jew) that it will be very difficult for Trump to attack her with anything like the same ferocity or brutality that he would use against a white man. If he does go hard at her, he will be accused of misogyny, bullying, racism, antisemitism etc etc.

He probably won’t care about allegations of racism, because few Black people who live in key swing states will vote for him anyway. But he should care about appearing blatantly misogynistic, because he needs the votes of moderate white women in middle America if he wants to win.

NerdWhoEatsMedlar · 22/07/2024 17:35

She has seen a lot of abuse and is presumably ready to put up with more.
Apparently she was even an man once Hmm

In 2020 I led a study on gendered abuse and disinfo against women political candidates. We found 336k pieces of abuse & disinfo targeting 13 candidates; 78% of that targeted Kamala Harris. After Biden’s endorsement, here are some narratives and tropes we should look out for: (1/)

And of course she would not be able to stand for president if she hadn’t been born in America.

Whenwillitgetwarm · 22/07/2024 12:45

I thought she was an American of half black, half Indian parentage? …Goes of to check…just checked. She’s definitely half black, half Indian and an American. Not African.

Maybe someone needs to show Farage how to use an Atlas?

Many black Americans refer to themselves as African Americans. Don’t know whether she does but this is what is meant by the term.

Dweetfidilove · 22/07/2024 17:23

I wish on everything holy and unholy that Michelle Obama has no presidential ambitions, as the office doesn't deserve her.
