Too similar sibling names

My daughter is Charlotte and i am expecting my second, another girl, due in October. Charlotte's middle name is Pearl and the new baby's would be Opal. I really like the name Colette and I think it goes really well with Charlotte with the similar structure but different soundings. I also like the names Chloe and Nicole but I would still strongly prefer Colette over them. Is it too similar?

They're far too similar. And having the same initial letter just for the sake of it is very twee and, if I'm being brutally honest as you posted in AIBU, about as classy as the Rooneys and their brood of Ks.

Ditch the C and pick a girl's name that isn't almost identical to her sister's.

Dollydoo15 · 20/07/2024 08:23

Not keen on Collette sorry. Prefer
Camilla
Claudia
Catherine
Cressida

IncompleteSenten · 20/07/2024 08:22

They're a bit similar yes and some people can be a bit unkind and mocking about same letter for all family members theme. I knew a family where the parents were both J and they gave their sons J names too and some people laughed at them and were sneery about it which I thought was unnecessary and said more about those mocking then it did about the J family tbh.

It sounds like you really want to use the name so use it. What other people think shouldn't stop you.

Where are posters implying the names just 'look' similar?
People are saying they're too similar, and by that it means in both looks AND sounds. People have said that when you're shouting upstairs it'll be difficult to know who you're shouting to.
That reasoning is not about how the name just looks.

I can't imagine circumstances under which I need to "shout upstairs". I was brought up in a house where, if you needed to speak to someone, you would go and knock on their room's door. So, how the names sound when shouted would not be a consideration for me whatsoever.

ricecrispiecakes · 20/07/2024 08:20

They're way too similar.

The same initial thing really reminds of big Christian fundamentalist families where everyone's name begins with the same letter - it just seems very cult-like to me 😂

timoteigirl · 20/07/2024 08:20

I think the middle names similarity doesn't matter as you hardly ever need to say them after announcing the name. Colette and Charlotte are very similar but there are sibling names in existence that are way more similar than those two. Have you considered Nicolette?

I personally like Colette more than Charlotte which reminds me of puddings.

BTW Colette is much better than Coleen.

Bluebirdover · 20/07/2024 08:19

Both lovely names, but too similar in my opinion.

MyBluntSloth · 20/07/2024 08:00

We think it makes a lot of sense to start with the same letter and we also both love C starting names

It makes no sense whatsoever.

You want to call her Colette which is obvious from your thread so why even bother to start a thread just so you can argue if someone points out potential reasons why you shouldn't.

Charlotte and Colette aren't that similar. As a child I would be more pissed off with Pearl or Opal as my middle name as I think they are awful but again your kids your choice.

Gillyyy · 20/07/2024 08:18

I personally think Charlotte and Colette are far too similar. I think if you are going for the same first initial the feel of the name needs to be a bit different, while still in keeping with the first sibling.

Charlotte Pearl & Clementine Opal (Lottie & Clemmie)

Charlotte Pearl & Cordelia Opal

Charlotte Pearl & Coralie Opal

Charlotte Pearl & Cressida Opal (Lottie & Cressie)

SkyBlueCloudyLakes · 20/07/2024 08:16

I love both of these names! I don't understand why people are saying they sound similar. Yes, they both start with C but that's it. Thousands of families have children with names starting with same letter as their siblings. And the girls being siblings, isn't it lovely to have names that have a similar structure to them. And yes, they will be able to tell their names apart when you call them (as long as they want to listen xD). But obviously there's no right or wrong here. Just do what you want to do. Big thumbs up from me tho (oh for the middle names as well, love them).

thisoldcity · 20/07/2024 08:15

I think Colette is a lovely name!

BTW people on here love to hate on baby name choice so please take what people say with a pinch of salt.
I've seen my own child's name talked about on one of the worst name threads 😂🙄 and my daughters name is actually lovely & we have had nothing but compliments on it irl & it very much suits her.
Most people on here seem to veer towards names like Catherine, Emily, Mary etc etc.

How ridiculous to make such a sweeping statement. People aren't 'hating' on the baby name choice FFS, the names sound way too similar, and that's the only reason people are advising the OP against using them together.

No sorry we want something classy and elegant!

I can see you're thinking Coleen Rooney here 😂

HowIrresponsible · 20/07/2024 08:12

Don't do it. My mum gave me a name with the same initial as her. By the time I was old enough to get post it was constantly her opening my post as she often didn't notice Ms vs Mrs.

Once she even took my poll card by accident (before the days of photo id) and voted in my name therefore I was turned away from the polling station and not allowed to vote.

Colette is also a bit naff compared to Charlotte.

There are plenty of nicer names.

I am listening to advice there seems to be a mix of opinions here. I am also considering Annette but DH would prefer something starting with C

Camilla. Totally different and really pretty

Coleen is hardly and different to Colette!
Are you being genuine?

BurntOrangeAutumn · 20/07/2024 08:09

I think they're both lovely names & compliment each other nicely - love the middle names too.
I don't think they sound too similar.
Go for it & congratulations! Good luck with the birth mama 💐

Not sure why you asked for opinions as you aren’t listening to any advice. You seem determined to go ahead with Colette whatever.

Not everyone tells me they are too similar its about half/ half. I feel like the consensus here is it looks similar but doesnt sound similar but i would like more perspectives before deciding

They are too similar and a bit of a tongue twister to say together.

Charlotte and Chloe
Charlotte and Claudia
Charlotte and Cleo
Charlotte and Caroline
Charlotte and Cordelia
Charlotte and Cora
Charlotte and Cosette
Charlotte and Cayetanna

It doesn't make sense. At all. How on earth does it make sense?

It just looks like you loved Charlotte and you try to use a copycat name as Charlotte is so great. And the middle names of Pearl and then Opal are a little bit daft. They are individuals. Treat them as such. also name wise.

Crystallizedring · 20/07/2024 08:03

Well you can't have Nicole if you want them both to start with letter C. I think Chloe would be better though. Otherwise they're going to sound too similar
