Quotes to makes it aibu worthy but, I've ditched my husband and my young kids (8mnth + 3yr) tonight to go out for a couple of drinks tonight and feel like maybe I'm strange.

I mean I'll still be out even if the consensus is that it is strange, but does anyone without childcare just go out by themselves for a few a drinks every few weeks since they can't do it as a couple and they don't have a friendship group yet.

Fwiw we just moved to this area in February but I was a lone fish before then to tbf.

Good for you.
Just put your phone, maybe notepad, paper, pen whatever on the table to make it look as if you're busy. Otherwise you'll be swamped by men thinking it odd that you're alone and doing their best to make sure you aren't!

Tarkan · 20/07/2024 18:44

I take myself out places alone all the time. Had dinner and drinks by myself last night then met up with a friend and my DH for more drinks later.

I went to a gig last weekend by myself too and had a mini solo pub crawl before and after it as well. It was honestly one of the best days of my life.

mondaytosunday · 20/07/2024 18:42

I go out to the movies or theatre alone. Lunch etc. Do you mean you are going to the pub? I could do that during the day but not sure of an evening, especially a Friday or Saturday night.

5128gap · 20/07/2024 18:34

I'd go to a film, concert, gig even a meal alone if I had to, but I wouldn't just go to sit in a pub. Probably because I see them as a functional building in which to meet my friends rather than a destination that offers anything itself. Also men are a nuisance and id rather watch saturday telly than listen to 'you been stood up?' 'you can sit with us darlin' on repeat.

Alarae · 20/07/2024 18:25

I've taken it upon myself to go to the theatre on my own. Just because I don't have anyone to go with at the time, doesn't mean I should miss out!

You never talk to the person next to you in the theatre anyway, so makes no difference.

Maddy70 · 20/07/2024 18:14

I go out fairly often by myself. I prefer it with other people but its still nice
Have fun

This will be an unpopular reply but I love 'Spoons for this. Order on the app. No one bothers you. Totally normal. Easy,

The local 'Spoons' is my occasional treat for a cooked breakfast. Wouldn't go there in the evening as it's a tad rough to put it politely. Theatre, gigs, cinema are fun on your own. You're going for a performance not to talk to other people. I've been on lots of holidays alone. I used to eat at lunchtime mostly and have snacks and drinks on my balcony at dinner time depending on where I stayed. Happy memories of eating my way through Venice, slices of pizza and ice-creams as I walked along. I enjoy people watching so am always happy doing that.

FloydWasACat · 20/07/2024 17:37

I do it, I am in a very friendly pub and I have some solid mates. Do it x

WigglyVonWaggly · 20/07/2024 17:33

I’ve never been for a drink by myself but I regularly go to the cinema on my own. It’s always got other people who’ve gone on their own. I’d happily tuck myself away in a quiet country pub for a drink - it’s just that my locals are all busy and loud so not relaxing! Nothing at all odd about doing things alone if they suit you.

GreyCarpet · 20/07/2024 17:31

Yep. Love going out for a few beers and a gig on my own.

Mairzydotes · 20/07/2024 17:28

Back in the day we'd all just turn up at the pub and see who was out .

Now I wish I could just go to the pub by myself. I don't get the opportunity to go otherwise. I'd only choose certain pubs .

I go for coffee and things during the day alone.

PassingStranger · 20/07/2024 17:16

Of course people go put alone, some people go on holiday alone.

Hollowvoice · 20/07/2024 17:09

I love taking myself and a book off to the pub, should do it more often!

YouAndMeAndThem · 20/07/2024 17:08

I probably wouldn't just go out and sit in a bar with a wine alone but would think nothing of going for a coffee or a meal! Not sure why it's different 🤔

Letsgodancing · 20/07/2024 17:07

Do you have any nice hotels in your town? Most have bars and non residents can drink until 10 or 11pm. It's usually more relaxed atmosphere too

Elsvieta · 20/07/2024 16:45

I LOVE reading alone in pubs. Not strange at all. Some people seem to think it's weird that a woman should dare to carve out a little space and peace and quiet for herself, but to hell with them.

Garlickest · 19/07/2024 23:08

When travelling, it's not a bad idea to pick out a cafe/bar - or a couple - that suits you and has a good atmosphere, then make it kind of a home base. The staff look out for you, regulars get to know you a bit; you get your own space and a supportive environment.

Lentilweaver · 19/07/2024 23:01

I go on solo holidays and city breaks too, and I have been married a very long time. Perhaps that's why I have stayed married, because I can go away by myself!

I take my Kindle and prop myself up at a bar or in a restaurant quite regularly, especially when travelling for work.

Have done for many years because when ai was single in my 20s and working crazy shifts I realised I wouldn't get to do anything otherwise. Since then I've been in several solo holidays, lots of city breaks in the UK, the theatre, cinema, fancy restaurants, nice bars, dive bars and everything in between.

Same here (though often with a paper book or newspaper). I just do what I want, when I'm ready 🙂 I chat to people some times, others not. I used to go clubbing by myself because I love dancing and all my friends had "grown out of it".

WorriedMama12 · 19/07/2024 22:55

I go out myself to a coffee shop or sometimes to the cinema, that's about it.

LadyChilli · 19/07/2024 22:53

Love51 · 19/07/2024 21:33

I don't but it sounds quite luxurious! Enjoy!

God yes, utterly decadent. There's a bar near me that does really nice wines and lots of snacks like olives, hummous, cheeses. I fancy going there with a book in the near future. I might just be inspired by this thread!

Katbum · 19/07/2024 22:46

yes. Drinks, theatre, exhibitions, cinema, walks, hobbies…I like my own company.

Tanefan · 19/07/2024 22:46

SummerInSun · 19/07/2024 22:46

I don't go out at night, but DH and I always try to give each other at least an hour or so lost weekends to go to a cafe alone and chill. As PP have said, read, people watch, whatever. The main thing is that you have found a way to relax and your partner is understanding about facilitating that, as hoped you are to him. As long as it's reciprocal and both partners get alone time (and you aren't deliberately leaving at the hardest times but when things are generally under control at home), sounds fine to me.

PandaWorld · 19/07/2024 22:42

I wouldn't go out if I had an issue with doing anything alone.
I wouldn't feel comfortable going to a bar or holiday alone but I always shop, go to coffee shops on my own and if there's something I really want to see, the cinema too.
