To not understand why my mum ( or anyone ) needs to sunbathe topless ?

I'm staying with mum and my two kids at a holiday cottage. It's private so no one can see, but I still don't get why she or anyone feels the need to sunbathe topless ? I would just never do it and it makes me a bit uncomfortable to be around people who sunbathe topless.

I get it I get it, not everyone is like me.

But why do your boobs need to be brown ?

She also insists on wearing a bikini at almost 70. Ok fine, I don't wear a bikini and I'm not even 40 yet. I do think, good for you but I do think one pieces are just more classy. Same with having everything on display.

I realise I sound mean spirited don't I ? Or just uptight ? But isn't more, less and more classy in general ? Interested in opinions !

She raised me so I'm surprised I am not more on display myself but I'm pretty private about my body and always have been.

They are just bags of fat, it’s healthy to see other bodies of all shapes and sizes.

LegendInMyOwnLunchtime · 19/07/2024 10:14

I prefer to sunbathe and swim naked if circumstances allow.

Absolutely about the freedom.

SpilltheTea · 19/07/2024 10:11

It's just the human body OP, calm down.
That being said, getting your tits out with your grandchildren around is bloody weird.

FoxtrotSkarloey · 19/07/2024 10:11

I would have said leave her be. Personally I don't see the need, if you're worried about strap marks, just take the straps down.

But now I have DC it's trickier. I'm trying to distill in them that privates and private, and that includes boobs for girls, and that as they grow up, they can't run round with no clothes on. And then they see adult women topless on the beach.

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 19/07/2024 10:11

I'm always quite envious of the way men can swan around in just a pair of shorts if they want. I don't see why their nipples can be on display and mine can't, really.

Having said that, I cover up from neck to knee, put a hat on and sit in the shade at the first sign of any sun.

RitaFromThePitCanteen · 19/07/2024 10:09

My partner sunbathes topless. He's a man though so he's automatically allowed more freedom.

It's only social conditioning that makes you think women's bodies are obscene and men's aren't. Society isn't always right about everything, you know.

I've just developed flexural psoriasis in the crease under one breast and I suspect that I'm about to manifest it in my underarms.

I wish I had enough privacy to sunbathe without a top to try and get sun to these areas (I'd need to tape up my breast and put my arms above my head).

MissUltraViolet · 19/07/2024 10:09

There was a thread the other day about whether it was appropriate for a mum to wear a thong bikini in front of her children and the majority said nooo, the kids would hate it, be embarassed etc.

This post people are saying it's fine for grandma to have her boobs out in front of the grandchildren.

Never change, MN!

OhmygodDont · 19/07/2024 10:09

Currently making the most of the sun in my garden boobs out. All the local kids are at school and neighbours at work. My garden my boobs 🤷🏻‍♀️

MrHarleyQuin · 19/07/2024 10:07

I enjoy the sun but lie in the shade and I don't tan my boobs.

tuttuttutt · 19/07/2024 10:07

I wouldn't inflict my tits on my children at any age. I still have flashbacks of my parents naked bodies as a child.

MrHarleyQuin · 19/07/2024 10:06

Compare the relatively sane comments on this thread to the absolute meltdown the other days some people had at the suggestion of a 41 year old wearing a thong bikini.

DinnaeFashYersel · 19/07/2024 10:05

Ageist and sexist.

Runbunny · 19/07/2024 10:04

I'm not a fan of top less sunbathing, tbh not sure aboutbsunbathing at all, but you're wrong about 2 piece v 1 piece swim suits.

Happyinarcon · 19/07/2024 10:03

I would dislike this, it would make me and my kids feel uncomfortable. It’s great if other cultures are fine with it but that’s precisely what makes them other cultures. Whatever people do in private is their own affair but I would choose not to be an audience. People are constantly being told to put up boundaries they are comfortable with but at the same time being told their boundaries are silly.

Namechanged11111 · 19/07/2024 10:02

My mum goes topless and I don’t get it either.

She can be the only topless woman on the beach at times.

She holidays with two other couples and her dh. I asked her once if she would walk downstairs with her boobs out when they were stood in her kitchen, she said absolutely not!!

So why is it okay in a foreign country 🤷🏼‍♀️

ContentSolitude · 19/07/2024 09:58

I'm more surprised that people still sunbathe in this day and age, with all the sun safety awareness.

Ws2210 · 19/07/2024 09:56

I'd be worried about melanoma on my tits

Cinocino · 19/07/2024 09:47

As for the bikini. I just think a one piece looks better on most people, most of the time. It's my preference.

But you don’t get a preference for what other people think of we and feel comfortable in! It’s not about your preference.

It's not up to you though is it? I personally don't wear a traditional bikini anymore (I'm 43 and a bit overweight but not "plus size"), it's really just my body insecurity and I know that's my issue. I would never force my views on anyone else.
I wear a tankini if I want to be by the pool all day on holiday because it's more practical for toilet trips.

Also young children don't think anything about boobs apart from possibly food so I don't think your DC would even notice. If it was a teenage boy I would say grandma should cover up (her boobs not stop wearing a bikini) or it would be a bit embarrassing

Abhannmor · 19/07/2024 09:54

I'd be more worried about actinic keratosis to be honest. Or , worse again, melanoma. Are some parts of the body more sensitive? A lot of elderly people seem to have sun damage around the temple or ankles for example. Not much danger of it this year I suppose ....

ToBeOrNotToBee · 19/07/2024 09:53

Honestly, the feeling of sun and a warm breeze against your skin is wonderful. Especially our breasts when they're rarely free from some restrictive clothing or another.
Men are very happy to whip off their tops, no reason why we shouldn't be able to as well.
I go topless on holiday whenever I can. If I had the privacy of my a non-overlooked garden, on a day like today, I'd be topless too.

Tel12 · 19/07/2024 09:52

I'm with you op, no need for everything to be on display. Guess you may need to rethink your holiday plans in the future.

LostTheMarble · 19/07/2024 09:51

They’re just boobs, probably the ones that fed you as a baby. Thought if you have teens with you I can see how they’d be uncomfortable. The bikini thing is silly though, there’s no age limit on them. Would you feel uncomfortable with a man being topless in this heat, or wear a body suit whatever his age?

Meadowfinch · 19/07/2024 09:51

OP, certainly a bit uptight 😀I'm British, 61 and I occasionally sunbathe topless, discreetly in my garden. Not because I want to be brown but because I like the feeling of sun and fresh air on my skin.

I wouldn't do it in front of my teen ds but I think you should leave your dm to it. It's her holiday too.

aghak · 19/07/2024 09:31

Well I mean I don't love it as a spectator tbh. I'm not sure my kids need to see it either but they're still small. But I think as they get older I may have to rethink or am I just being uptight and silly ?

It's just not something I want to do myself and I'm not sure I want my kids to see.

A spectator would mean you are choosing to look.
