AIBU to not be expected to answer emails at the weekend?

Awkward conversation with landlord today. An email was sent on a Friday whilst I was at work. I replied on Monday morning. My landlord seems to think that I should be picking up emails at the weekend. I've firmly said that isn't possible, but now I'm wondering if I'm being unreasonable. I have said that a text message if there is anything urgent would be better as I can quickly respond after work. AIBU to think that I should be able to enjoy my weekend without interference?

Being accommodating and polite is great, but that still doesn't mean being obliged to constantly monitor all comms just in case the landlord sends a message. It definitely doesn't entitle the landlord to scold his tenant.

well i suspect the “scolding” aspect of the OP’s post was somewhat hyperbolic

when i was renting and then when i was a landlord, i very much viewed my relationship and interaction with my landlord and then my tenant as a “you scratch my back and i”ll scratch yours”

Hence i always had a very good relationship with my LL and we both benefited a great deal from that and likewise i had a very good relationship with my tenant and we both benefit a great deal from that.

And sometimes, gasp, that involved going over and above was was contractually required

I hope your LL doesn't respond to your emails until the next working day

That is all

I'm not sure you understand what a Landlord-Tenant relationship is. The Tenant is paying for a service, so the Landlord has a legal duty of care meaning they need to be available if an emergency arises with the property. Guidance says 24-48 hours (just checked). The Tenant does not have that legal responsibility because the Landlord can access the premises if it is a true emergency and the Tenant is not available (e.g. water leaking to flat below while Tenant is absent). This was clearly not an actual emergency. If the Landlord takes a few days to respond about repainting the flat or extending the lease that's reasonable, but they must still respond in an emergency.

It seems a lot stay too attached to their phones. It is not instant messenger. People are entitled to have digital detox and not be constantly checking emails. That includes text and phone calls. We don't have to be in call for others unless paid heavily for privilege.

Didn't see email until logged on Monday morning. Wind neck in. Chippy ffs.

you kind of do given your response to fairly reasonable poster

StJanetof · 18/07/2024 23:47

Personal emails? Why wouldn’t you check them at the weekend?

I agree that text would probably be quicker but I don’t put time constraints on my personal emails.

I don’t understand why you would want it hanging over you all weekend that you had to send this email (10 minutes after their office opens?!) on Monday morning. I would have sent a reply on Saturday or Sunday which they could then pick up whenever they chose. Just because an office closes over the weekend doesn’t mean no one has access to urgent emails.

You honestly sound so chippy about this it’s bizarre to read.

Just because their office was closed it does not mean that someone wasn't checking their emails that evening or was still working late into the evening.

I don't understand what working hours have to do with when to answer personal emails? You seem oddly fixated on things which are not at all related.

Email is asynchronous and shouldn't be used for anything that needs an urgent response. A text would have been much more appropriate. I would also not respond well to a landlord scolding me about my response times, they do not own your time and it was not an emergency, extremely unprofessional of him to complain.

That said, I'm amazed you don't check email. Mine comes to my phone so it's just dealt with as and when, I'd have that kind of minor message dealt with on the way out of the door from work.

InvestinITMN · 18/07/2024 07:25

did you landlord say this to you re responding over the weekend over the phone op or in an email?

TheKneesOfTheBees · 18/07/2024 07:25

YANBU. Email is not an immediate way of getting a response. I think you're perfectly reasonable not to email when the person wasn't there anyway! If people want an immediate answer then I'd say text or WhatsApp have more expectation of a quick response, but many people have jobs that makes it impossible to reply straight away, so even with that there may be a few hours' delay.

InvestinITMN · 17/07/2024 18:42

trades people are notoriously booked up

added to which, whilst might not be essential in the sense the property is going to fall down, it may be essential in order to maintenance of property and they won’t want a problem to get worse

sounds like the kind of responsive LL that many would welcome

I don't think "many would welcome" a ticking off for not responding to an email, as if they were children.

The landlord should (and could) have called if it was so urgent, but the truth is, it wasn't. Tradespeople aren't usually around on a weekend either.

cloudy477654 · 17/07/2024 20:55

I don't reply to work emails on the weekend but why doesn't your landlord have your personal email?

KatiesMumWoof · 17/07/2024 20:53

Oh & neither my Dad nor my boss would get away with it either, but I'd be less rude telling them to Fuck iff!

KatiesMumWoof · 17/07/2024 20:51

he may die of old age first if he emails me.

He'd also be asked when he adopted me or employed me! He's not my Dad nor my boss so WTAF does he think he has the right to dictate when I reply to emails.

its 2024, but a phone still has the capacity to make a phone call or text.

hes a nob.

LadyCrumpet · 17/07/2024 20:46

Yanbu op. I only do 'life admin' during work hours. I'm lucky that I have a job where I can do that though.

Choochoo21 · 17/07/2024 20:44

I always check my emails at the weekend but I wouldn’t check them multiple times.

I could check them Saturday morning and then not check again until Sunday evening.
So anything urgent may not get answered.

An email should be used if it’s something that is a week or more away but anything that’s needed the same day or next couple of days should be a text/phone call.

Bananaadramaa · 17/07/2024 20:39

I might have missed it but did you read or see the email from landlord on Friday or over the weekend?

If no then tbh I don’t think YABU.

If your landlord has your number they should text or call if trying to book in a tradesman for the next week. I’m trying to be on my phone less especially at weekends and I don’t check my emails at all really on Saturday/Sunday but I do answer texts or calls.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 17/07/2024 20:39

Your landlord likely doesn't have a rule about not replying to emails at a weekend so if you'd messaged on Friday night, 3am on Saturday or Sunday lunch time he could have dealt with it then. Most people check personal emails on a regular basis rather than only during the working week.
