To NOT support England ???

Shaketherombooga · 15/07/2024 11:49

I’m not English. I have lived in England for a very long time. I do not support the England football team, I frequently support their opposition!

Colleague has taken the England loss hard, and said ‘ I bet you’re glad they lost’ - I replied that I was essentially a neutral but thought Spain deserved the win.

Hes gone off in a big old rant about how if I live here I should be supporting England teams etc.
I think he should have a wee lie down and chill out!

YABU - you SHOULD support the team of a country you’ve made a life in - even if you are from a former colony of that country

YANBU - of course you don’t have to support a national team that’s not yours

The whole of Europe? Really? I doubt it. I quite like to support opponents of Man City being a Man Utd fan but the extent of your hatred is stupid. Get a grip.

You're totally making stuff up there though. 'the extent of your hatred '. Sorry but no. Up for the other team does not in any way equate to hatred.

I think Ireland doesn't really feel like it has something to prove on the world stage. Ireland is well liked generally, with a booming economy, a stable government and a good reputation. Not being able to play hurling against Italy for example isn't really something that's thought about.

The GAA is really a fantastic example of sport played for pure passion, there is no monetary gain for players, it's just all about the game.

👏👏

No, it's not. I always pick someone. Is it only bigotry if I don't pick England?

Read the post you responded to? We’re talking about the newspaper headlines and the general xenophobia towards the English. That is more than banter and you know it.
To be clear…We weren’t talking about who you support. As has been said multiple times on this thread, no one cares about you or anyone else not supporting England.

The Nationalist is a niche publication. It's not one of our proper newspapers. The clue is in the name btw.

Probably extra pissed off by the election result. Haha 😂

*The newspaper not you.

"I'm keeping up just fine. You're rude, and not making a huge amount of sense. It's almost like you're going out of your way to be insulting. I'm not sure what you're hoping to achieve tbh."

It's almost like you're twisting posts and attempting to reflect your own intentions on to other people.

Well you can both say what you like but when your own fans are storming your own national stadium I think it’s fair to say their reputation is in tatters. That’s why the whole of Europe was rooting for Spain. That and the fact they were by far the best, most deserving team.

Of course it was. Google "The Nationalist" newspaper. There's banter and then there is hate. I think they crossed that line.

I'm just reading some of the posting styles/replies and I'm wondering if we have some sock puppetry going on. OP if that's the case then it's even more pathetic than I first thought.

As PP said before it's actually a testament to "the English" that this thread hasn't been deleted and that people are willing to actually pipe up and defend themselves.

You are being a obtuse. There is normal football banter and then there was that. I have to say bigotry rather than racism as English isn't a race. Google the article. I imagine there would be a massive uproar if it been an English newspaper. I didn't mind Paddy Powers adverts though. It was light hearted. The Irish seemed better in that regard.

"What are you on about?"

Seriously, if you're having trouble keeping up then just try rereading, it's so entitled to expect people to keep going back over and explaining themselves to you.

"Well you do seem to have been pissing about on MN all day."

Do I? Considering you haven't been able to keep track of anything you've said to me, I'm surprised you've come to that conclusion. But as I said, I'm not the one making unbelievable claims and using it to bash other people.

England fans are renowned for causing trouble everywhere they go. They even did it at Wembley in the last euros.

And you clearly know as much about Scottish politics as you know about football.

The behaviour has significantly improved in the last few years. There has been big efforts made to improve it. Most of the trouble at this tournament was from opposite fans attacking English fans whose reputation proceeds them. Funny you are talking of incidents from years ago.

Makes me laugh seeing Scots pretend their fans don't get drunk and piss about.

DanielGault · 15/07/2024 21:42

Come on, you know it’s more than that. Don’t pretend it isn’t.

That's crap. The vast majority of people pick someone they're up for in a football match. Bigotry my arse.

Of course it was. Google "The Nationalist" newspaper. There's banter and then there is hate. I think they crossed that line.

To be fair the Irish have been fairly good natured really about it all. Some of the Scots however....

Have you seen some of the headlines on some of your papers? Damn well looks like bigotry and xenophobia towards English people. Don't call it banter.

How is our reputation in tatters?

So is your independence hope and if you get independence Spain will veto your EU membership. 🤣 Remember that.

I'm not the one who seems to have lost track of time @Shaketherombooga you've been on here all day posting remarkably consistently since this morning. Do you actually have a life?

"Likewise!"

Yes @DanielGault but I haven't claimed to be at work arguing with a "colleague" who was later sent home for pouting about a football match have I?

Well you do seem to have been pissing about on MN all day.
