To find the Ambani wedding distasteful

I know everyone can do what they like , it's their money . But such an extravagant event in a place where a large proportion of the population live in slum conditions is rather unsettling.? Plus the bride is stunning but the groom unfortunately does not come across as an individual with a lot

of intelligence . Before I get flamed , he and his family are encouraging the public to view them and I guess are expecting admiration.

Why pay guests to attend? It’s very odd. Maybe at that level of wealth everything is transactional? Would love to see the prenup.

The amount of casual racism in this thread, disguised as faux concern is what's really disgusting and tacky.

It's not racism to call out excessive spending by the super rich on extravagant events when a country has an enormous amount of poverty which these billionaire families could do more to alleviate.

There was similar concern/ criticism around the King's coronation, even on Mumsnet.

People can see when societies (be it India or the UK) are unequal and are calling it out which is positive.

Anyone being a billionaire is grotesque and distasteful. There’s really no need for them at all. No one needs to be that rich.

I am skint but at least I don’t have to attend a party with Boris Johnson and Kim Kardashian. I am thankful for that. Every cloud has a silver lining!

Garlickest · 15/07/2024 00:38

Would I attend an extravagant billionaire wedding? Hell, yes! (Not that it's ever gonna happen 😂) If my expenses were paid? Repeat 'Hell, Yes!' again until bored.

Do I find conspicuous consumption on this scale distasteful? Yes. But I damn well wouldn't say so as a guest, it'd be very bad manners.

I like Khloe K's dress/lehenga. And several of the others. This one's nice - it had great gold swags in the back of the skirt. Just off to wrap myself in an assortment of old party shawls and pretend ...

They have paid people to attend as guests. It's so weird. Weddings are usually attended by family and friends only.

Whenwillitgetwarm · 15/07/2024 00:12

For me it’s not a question of western v eastern etc it’s just a question of different.

I’m sure their wedding provided lots of jobs which is great and better than hoarding it all. .

The Indian caste system is waaaaaay more entrenched and pervasive than the UK. If your culture and religion tells you
reincarnation is real then you will believe those who are poorest must have done something in a past life to suffer and must work through this to have a better next life, and that you are living your best life because you deserve it.

EurJumper · 15/07/2024 00:03

The Ambani wedding is pretty OTT, but I also find all the Royal weddings, processions, 'tours' to Commonwealth countries etc very gratuitous and tacky. The Ambani's are not seeking my taxes to have their party - so they can have it as far as I'm concerned.

And until all British billionaires and Royalty make it their personal mission to solve poverty in the UK (and beyond tbh, considering the legacy of colonialism) - I don't see why it's on the Ambani family to fix India.

No it isn’t. I began my career working for an investment company that was heavily Indian based. I very quickly realised that class was all important. It is, frankly, despicable. People look down on others because of the caste they were born into. It’s reprehensible.

Sure, you and Britain in general are so enlightened 🤣 compared to these “despicable” backward societies 🤣

have you ever come across the role of the British empire in entrenching the caste system and making it much worse than it was? Read up on that

You've just essentially described the UK....
In my town there are many, many homes £8mil+ with their own Helipad.
There are also many, many people so poor that they're quite literally living in tents. Some who have houses, can’t afford electricity! I was one of them for 2 years (using a propane camping stove for meals) and counting pennies for a pint of milk.

(Yet everyone says our town is posh! Ha...)

You know that you don’t have to shoehorn equivalence if you don’t know what you’re talking about.

It doesn’t make you sound smart, just very silly.

India is nothing like the UK, trust me. Homeless kids shitting in front of me as I went to get my train as there is no toilet for them and never has been. Kids with cancer on the street BEGGING for treatment days from death. Kids with brains tumours, even treatable illnesses just die, it’s bloody awful.

Knitgoodwoman · 14/07/2024 23:39

I agree op. I was shocked and appalled at the poverty in India, it broke my heart to see kids who needed basic treatment left homeless on the street. Yet India have this wealth and a space programme? If you’re a kid and you get cancer or a brain tumour and you live in a poor village, you can’t afford the £200 treatment and you die. That’s it, the government and all these wealthy people just leave you to die.

Onebaldandonehairy · 14/07/2024 23:36

Although you could consider the fact that there must be some trickle down, so it must benefit the local economy.

Onebaldandonehairy · 14/07/2024 23:35

Courtney looked like she was having a blast, Kim looked really uneasy and a bit vulnerable. It felt a bit of an uncomfortable watch. Even if you don't consider the massive amounts of money being pissed up the wall.

Unfortunately money can’t buy class.

And they paid celebrities to attend. Giving trashy a whole new meaning.

I was at the Taj once when they were hosting an amazing wedding
The flowers and scent were so beautiful that as I wandered the hotel at 4 am with jet lag the staff invited me in to see
It lasted 3 days. We were invited in to part of it- the opulence was unbelievable

oh how tacky! We aren’t that tacky, we are progressive, we are so so culturally advanced, our royal weddings are much cheaper ( 🤣) etc etc

to a person living in an Indian slum even UK middle class lifestyle with holiday in Turkish all inclusive is unimaginable level of wealth.

Not at all. Many people have made exactly the same comparison with the Royal weddings. Tacky doesn’t have cultural or geographic limitations.

Femme2804 · 14/07/2024 23:19

Cmon people. Its culture. Even normal indian wedding its usually 7 days. The minimum are 3 days. That for normal culture wedding. They are wealthy family of course they will be extravagant. You talk Like royal wedding here not extravagant.

the beide and groom both from billionaire family and been dating since university. The groom used to be thin but he is sick with something i dont know what and the meds makes him gained weight Significantly but the bride still with him despite so many people think she is gold digger but she isn’t. She is from billionaire family aswell.

so i dont think its tacky. Its extravagant because indian wedding are also like that. Ita their culture to have such extravagant wedding.

blueshoes · 14/07/2024 23:18

I cannot think of anything worse for the guests than to attend a wedding that lasts from March to July. One day is bad enough.

All that money but the venues looked tacky.

MrsSkylerWhite · 14/07/2024 23:08

HTAF do Blair and his wife justify this to themselves?
Sickening.

DodoTired · 14/07/2024 23:07

Oh come on. It’s happening in totally different country, how is that your business??

have you protested royal weddings, coronation etc?
Do you shop on high street (which pays peanuts to sweatshop workers in countries like that)
