To find the Ambani wedding distasteful

I know everyone can do what they like , it's their money . But such an extravagant event in a place where a large proportion of the population live in slum conditions is rather unsettling.? Plus the bride is stunning but the groom unfortunately does not come across as an individual with a lot

of intelligence . Before I get flamed , he and his family are encouraging the public to view them and I guess are expecting admiration.

I am of Indian origin. Can only speak for myself, but I don't think being horrified at this excessively vulgar display of wealth is racist. I am. Many Indians are. Even in a country where it is custom to invite everyone you have ever met to your wedding.

Many Indians are also appalled by inequality- we aren't completely callous as people think we are- but it's a huge problem to solve, beyond the power of any one person. Some progress has been made- millions have been lifted out of poverty- but nowhere nearly enough because of the scale of the issue.

I also don't think it's cultural appropriation for people to dress in Indian clothes, though Kim K looked beyond tacky and inappropriate. ( but that's her brand).

Other points that people have raised: the space programme, the caste system, and so on are fairly complex and need a whole new thread!

Extravagant events happen in India every day.

Indian weddings do tend to go on for a long time, there are lots of different ceremonies.

You do invite many people not just family and close friends.

The Ambani family do have philanthropic interests as do many other rich families.

Foreigners wearing Indian clothes is appreciated and often encouraged.

I know people who were at the wedding.

There's plenty of child poverty in this country yet every day, every Saturday, people have tacky, expensive weddings
The hypocrisy on this thread is breathtaking, as is the barely-disguised racism

Oh dear. Comments like these are so stupid.

howrudeforme · 15/07/2024 06:42

Hindu weddings are a programme of events.my cousin’s wedding was about two weeks. Many of the guests were not Asian but wore Asian clothes.

these are off the scale wealthy people and in many cultures it’s deemed fine to show off your wealth. Of course they’d pay for high profile guests and the dress code was traditional south Asian attire. The Royal weddings are rammed full of high profile people who have probably never met the bride and groom. It’s about contacts and maintaining your place in society.

but agree, it’s not a great look.

Chickenuggetsticks · 15/07/2024 06:37

I just want to point out that in regards to the space program India has launched multiple meteorological satellites that predict cyclones etc. this enables weather warnings. If you haven’t been in the middle of nowhere during a monsoon you don’t know how important that is for communities to protect life, property and livestock. Also technology progress tends to filter down and benefit more people over time. It is never a bad thing, look at the Industrial Revolution in the west.

On the wedding, I mean yeah it’s rich people doing rich people shit. I haven’t stopped flying because I could be donating to a homeless charity with my holiday money instead. Indian weddings also tend to be community affairs, friends, family, neighbours and business partners etc will be invited. A bog standard non wealthy Indian wedding can involve 500+ people. It’s not just a wedding, it’s a networking event. Yeah it’s over the top but a lot of people will also be making a lot of money working on this. You have to invited everyone who has ever invited you to their kids wedding. To exclude anyone is a serious snub.

I also don’t think many Indian people care if non Indian guests wear traditional Indian clothes. They are likely to appreciate the effort and recognise it’s a chance for people to get dressed up.

@DodoTired you are about the only responder her who has any decency. You have hit the nail completely on the head.
Anything to have a racist dig, it will be taken, under the guise of some moral outrage by we in the west. Who apparently are the only arbiters of taste...

TargetPractice11 · 15/07/2024 06:33

Imagine paying someone to attend your wedding. I'm embarrassed for them.

JamSandle · 14/07/2024 22:49

Unfair world. Makes me sick.

And how much do you redistribute your wealth?
What do you spend your cash on?
It isn't any of my business, though is it? I don't pass judgement on your spending, you have novright to critcise that of others

OneTC · 15/07/2024 06:27

I don't know anything about the people but when you complained he was getting married in India I assumed it was a destination wedding but you were actually complaining about an Indian couple getting married in India Grin

StaunchMomma · 14/07/2024 22:31

100% agree.

The level of child poverty and homelessness in India is huge.

Being so indulgent and wasteful in the face of that is both shocking and depressing.

Tulipsareredvioletsarebue · 15/07/2024 06:21

OP picked on a wedding, but let's face it, the display of wealth for show is everywhere- anyoen criticised Made in Chelsea, or my Sweet Sixteen (the ridiculous programme where rich kids were having their birthday organised by rich parents- Henry Cavill's girlfriend was on it at one point), do you criticise Mpappé for his collection of luxurious cars when he does not even have a driving license and is chauffered around, or in general astronomical contracts of football players or many other sportsmen.
We have built a culture where spending excessively is a sport people watch for pleasure.

Soozikinzii · 14/07/2024 21:18

Obscene . To see such extravagance . O for the days when the Mega rich paid for hospitals schools and libraries !

It still happens. Bill Gates Foundation? John Caudwell?

Gingerdancedbackwards · 15/07/2024 06:14

Look, people in this country get themselves into thousands of pounds of debt to have their 'fairytale' wedding. You have engagement parties, hen/stag events, bridal showers, etc.
Then you invite people unwanted, but are family so you have to, or their are friends of the parents.
You have flowers, favours, meals etc.
People even forgo property deposits to spend £10000000s on a wedding.
So what if its 20k or 2650 mill? None of anyone's fucking business. At least she looked stunning and not like a meringue

This thread is just to have a pop at another culture, isn't it?

zeddybrek · 15/07/2024 00:33

They have paid people to attend as guests. It's so weird. Weddings are usually attended by family and friends only.

If this is what people can afford- I know quite a few people who invited colleagues who had big weddings for a few hundred people and it was not just aunties and uncled who attended. Weddings for very wealthy people are 'usually' a bit different from your cousin. A friend who got married to an Indian man had hundreds at her wedding whom neither her nor her husband have ever heard of, it was a totally different world.

CelesteCunningham · 14/07/2024 21:21

I mean. Rich and powerful people having an extravagant wedding in an unequal society isn't a new thing, is it?

But how much did that cost? And did it last months? No one begrudges them a fancy wedding. It’s the scale of it. It’s just obscene.

IreneGoodnight · 15/07/2024 05:23

Some serious cultural appropriation going on amongst the foreign guests but presumably they're all too stinking rich to care what anyone thinks about it.

I was looking for someone to shout that- because it is such a stupid argument.

There are beautiful garments from all over the world that people would love to put on. If someone gave me a chance to put on a hanbok or a kimono I would nto hesitate for a second. It's not always about appropriation, but experiencing a culture and fashion.

itsmylife7 · 15/07/2024 06:02

I suppose the planes flying the guests to India don't cause any climate issues.

Sporadica · 15/07/2024 05:53

LunaNorth · 14/07/2024 21:07

It’s bloody ridiculous. Wtf is Tony Blair doing there?

He's having discussions with key Indian politicians on "the applications of Artificial Intelligence in areas of governance, education, health and politics, and ways to leverage the same to enhance incomes." 😀

Elderflower14 · 15/07/2024 05:48

Think what that money could have been spent on!!!!

Onthemaintrunkline · 15/07/2024 05:47

C0untBinFace · 15/07/2024 05:10

Vulgar as my nan would say

Your Nan’s right! Vulgar sums it up perfectly and all the toadying hangers on.

Yes there are aspects of over the topness in British Royal weddings, but nothing compared to this distasteful show.

Toddlerteaplease · 15/07/2024 05:40

Couldn't agree more! But it's old they've put on events for 'underprivileged' people. Which I think makes it even more distasteful.

HollyFern1110 · 14/07/2024 22:49

None of it will make the marriage any happier, stronger or successful.

I can’t get my head around the concept of a wedding celebration that lasts from March to July. Wouldn’t you get really bored?

At what point do they consumate? After the last table has been cleared and the washing up is done?
