To find the Ambani wedding distasteful

I know everyone can do what they like , it's their money . But such an extravagant event in a place where a large proportion of the population live in slum conditions is rather unsettling.? Plus the bride is stunning but the groom unfortunately does not come across as an individual with a lot

of intelligence . Before I get flamed , he and his family are encouraging the public to view them and I guess are expecting admiration.

They should do what they want with their own money and life. All who are disliking it aeem to have been soaking up the coverage of it....

Maybe not doing that would be the most obvious way to show its not accepted.

The scale of poverty in India is orders of magnitude greater than here. This wedding almost unimaginable in its spending.

You simply can't make an equivalence to your average British wedding and its relationship to poverty here.

Exactly.

However poverty is a relative concept and dc in the UK who are in poverty is at 4.7 million when measured against the society they participate in.
That’s a lot for our small country.

The principle remains the same no matter the figures involved.

He always does. 😂

There's plenty of child poverty in this country yet every day, every Saturday, people have tacky, expensive weddings
The hypocrisy on this thread is breathtaking, as is the barely-disguised racism

She looked like she was trying to out-bride the bride with her outfit…🙄

No chance of that! Her’s was prob £1-£2k max, some of the brides outfits were priceless.

Drfosters · 15/07/2024 07:34

Just remember though that that money it cost didn’t disappear into thin air- the money they spend paid suppliers. I’m all for rich people spending their money rather than hoarding it!

but yes it was just a crazy wedding- hope they never split up!

Boris and Carrie Johnson there too.

But there are often multiple parts to a wedding in India (or at least Hindu & Sihk) People like to compare the wealth against the poverty in India but completely ignore the same comparison in other countries like the USA. What have the Ambanis done for the poor is like saying what have the Kardashians done for Skid Row.

I don’t love the crazy displays of wealth but I also don’t like double standards.

Edited

And there are very lavish, multi stage weddings in India regularly. These don't shock.
I have been to Indian weddings and honestly, this is a red herring.

It's not double standards: this couple are very deliberately trying to spend as outrageously as possible.

Some serious cultural appropriation going on amongst the foreign guests but presumably they're all too stinking rich to care what anyone thinks about it.

I imagine that there was a dress code. Anyone wearing western clothing would stand out like a sore thumb and ruin the photos.

Oh dear. Comments like these are so stupid.

Oh yes? Why is that. Please do explain your logic. Because when you havexa discussion, or challenge in a conversation as an adult, the equivalent of 'so there' jusy doesn't wash

I think it's being deliberately obtuse to not see the difference between the usual weddings of wealthy and powerful people and this one. It happening in India is neither here nor there, and comparisons to royal or other celebrity weddings are just trying too hard.

We expect expensive garments, abundant food, the odd celebrity performer, massive guest lists and multi-stage celebrations. These types of weddings happen all the time.

This wedding is deliberately seeking out to be noticed by the whole world for it's spending and obscene display of wealth. A bit like an informal guiness world record of wedding spending attempt. It's completely different and deliberately seeking to shock.

I am no Tory supporter, but the Sunak- Murty wedding was very simple by Indian billionaire standards!

India must have the most unequal society worldwide . Unbelievable that there can be so much decadence and such absolute poverty side by side and that none of those people in attendance appears to have a conscience .Shame on them all.

I agree that some of the decadence seemed a bit much, but then so does that of many UK weddings, and since we also have an unequal society it's perhaps unwise to point fingers

We also don't have the Hindu beliefs around cause, effect and reincarnation and how they relates to poverty, which may be worth bearing in mind ...

The wedding is expensive yet looks so cheap. It was obviously an arranged marriage to keep the wealth between them as i can guarantee that the bride would not marry such an unattractive groom. Quite sad that they have to pay celebs to attend. They’re probably quiet p1ssed off at the Donald trump event as they wanted to be the hot topic in every media outlet.

Actually this is not true. The groom has a medical condition for which he is on steroids. He has gained a lot of weight because of this. When he got together with the bride, he was slim. He has been with her over seven years.
Say what you like about the wedding, but this is not true.

Even Indians are laughing at this! The pre wedding, the pre pre wedding, the blah blah😂

They’ve been getting married since March. As in, that’s when the wedding started.

That’s a fuckton of vol-au-vents.

🤣🤣🤣🤣

StayHomePeo · 15/07/2024 07:06

I would like to BoJo having a conversation with Shah Rukh Khan though 😂😂

Poolstream · 15/07/2024 07:06

I find it all fascinating.
The clothing is so beautiful and colourful.

I can’t judge because I don’t know much about Indian culture and weddings.
At least the wedding supported the local economy unlike many celebrities who pick castles abroad or similar.

StayHomePeo · 15/07/2024 07:05

I will start off by saying yes I do find it distasteful but….

you can easily compare it to the likes of the kardashians having endless parties for their kids that won’t even remember it, hiring private islands during Covid, having lavish weddings in Paris.

one thing I will say about the Ambanis is that they do have hospitals, support centres etc (and make money from oil so kind of negates it haha) but unlike say, the royal family, they actively do things for the community over just appearing at a charity in a nice dress and smiling and calling that support.

Mumbai is a weird place which seems to swing between utter poverty and extravagant immeasurable wealth. I think lots on the west maybe just haven’t seen it before.

Also, how well do you know the groom to judge his intelligence?

Rehne · 15/07/2024 06:59

I’m half Indian. Indian weddings are supposed to be big but with people you know and love. I cringe for the Ambani’s. Inviting all these celebs they must barely know…screams insecurity.
