I was a little bit shocked to see them gathering round him putting themselves in the line of fire like that. Would that happen in this country? Never seen anything like it before and not sure how I feel about it.

Imagine having to risk your life to protect someone who thinks it is worth less than his shoes and a photo op.

@EsmaCannonball
i cannot stand the bloke & all his 'fight fight fight' & fist waving was his usual bollocks, but the shoes was a pretty standard 'in shock' response.

i wouldn't incur a broken fingernail to protect him, let alone my life.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 15/07/2024 07:09

What was happening with Trumps shoes? I missed something.

They got knocked off in the drama and he refused to leave until he’d put them back on.

1clavdivs · 15/07/2024 07:12

DP is a bodyguard and yes he'd protect the principal. He does have bullet proof vests if it's high risk.

AmelieTaylor · 15/07/2024 07:11

Lellochip · 14/07/2024 19:06

It's how they protect their target, though I was just thinking what a terrible job they did, didn't cover him well at all. Someone could've quite easily got in a few more shots while he was doing his little victory first pumps, shoddy bodyguarding!

@Lellochip

dont blame them, he was behaving like the idiot he is.

Just wait until you hear what a firefighter does OP.

Yes, and the female bodyguard was quite short so she didn’t cover his head. But she protected his body.

Yes, and even at one point was putting her hand up to try and protect his head.

Trump is tall isn’t he, over 6ft. I imagine he’s taller than quite a few of the male protection officers. I felt sorry for them because they’re trying to cover him and get him off stage and he’s wanting to do fist pumps and shout at the crowd. He wasn’t exactly cooperating with them which must be frustrating. I know they had heard that the shooter was down but I’m sure the officers were concerned about a second shooter possibility. They’re risking their lives and Trump is increasing that risk at that point.

No thank you, I am quite happy to let the thread stand.

I suspect that post is to try to invite comments like echobelly and EsmaCannonball on protecting Trump. People go great lengths to make sure they carry on insulting and vilifying him. It is disgraceful and says more about people commenting like this than anything else.

Edited

I don’t like Trump, but in no way have I used this thread to criticise him personally.

Honestly I am quite taken aback by the venom in some of the replies here. I’m assuming most of mumsnet don’t employ their own bodyguards or make their living as one, I’m surprised by the level of defensiveness and scorn about what I consider to be an interesting topic of discussion. But whatever.

This doesn’t make sense. What a weird post. 😂 Not knowing what a bodyguard’s job is.

It's their job, no-one is forcing them to do something they don't want to do.

Exactly, it's not like they're conscripted.

I should think the people on his detail probably support him politically.

Not necessarily, they are professionals and their job is to protect whoever they are assigned to. They don't assign secret service agents based on political affiliation.

They will put their lives on the line eg for a serial killer if they assigned to get him to a court safely.

I don't see what how you feel about it and to do with anything. That's the job of the US secret service and they know the job requirements before they applied. And yes I would expect the PMs security to do everything to protect and save him same way a soldier will put his life on the line to fight for his or her country.

Police officers etc work within safety parameters designed to protect them. Obviously they can be in dangerous situations and can be killed or injured even with procedures in place to try to prevent this.

It is not at all the same as taking a bullet for a politician who has chosen to put themselves in the public eye ( and whatever they claim, top politicians are in it for their own ends, not altruism).

It also doesn't mean that they need psychiatric help 😂

And the ones who throw themselves in front of the politician are also working within safety parameters designed to protect them. Doesn't mean they always will, but they have more layers of security than ones who are further out.

petermaddog · 15/07/2024 01:11

the 20yr old took his dads gun, still stupid but big boy so his loss

Do you feel the same about police officers, firefighters, soldiers and the coastguard? Do you feel the same about people who jump in rivers to save dogs or drowning people?

They have no idea who they are saving, the chances are the rescuees are just as much of a muppet as Trump or half our politicians, but they do it anyway, because that’s what they sign up for.

They don’t need psychiatric help. They just think a little differently to you, and see honour in something you don’t really value very much. Horses for courses, but I’m sure as hell glad that some people think that way, because I’m a selfish arse and wouldn’t piss on most people of they were on fire. So the world is a better place for having them in it, than for having the likes of you and me.

It was jarring to see women protection officers putting themselves in harm's way given Trump's attitude to women's bodily autonomy on a personal and national level. Also jarring that he put his close protection at additional risk by delaying to get a good picture.
The focus should have been on quickly obeying his protection officers' advice to get to a place of safety (car) first to allow first responders to treat the injured.

RubyWinehouse · 15/07/2024 00:41

Echobelly · 14/07/2024 18:46

Yes, the same would happen here, as has been said, that is their job. But fortunately it has not been tested and of course, very fortunately, we live in a country where it is incredibly difficult to get hold of guns as opposed to a country full of them.

Must suck to know you might have to give up your life for a vile human being like Trump though, so more credit to them!

Why is he vile? Under his presidency there was pretty much world peace

People prepared to die for a public figure or an office need psychiatric help.
Literally, "They are worth more than me", my life is worth less than theirs".
Sad .

There's all sorts of people out there.
And some people would get so much pleasure and pride out of having such an important job.

There's of course a chance that they could be harmed, it could even happen to them on their very first day. But I would say that their risk of death is reduced in other ways due to the lifestyle and job too, safe vehicles, medics nearby, being very well trained in assessing threats etc, being prepared to handle stressful situations,If they were caught up in a random supermarket shooting they'd probably have a better chance than most.

A photographer risked his life just to get the perfect picture. And I would bet he'd love to experience something else equally dangerous/exciting if he could get another amazing shot. So they often put rewards over risk.

Security guards at schools etc over there are at risk every single day and probably don't get much credit or acknowledgement ever unless something happens.

Might they be wearing bullet proof vests?

As was Donal Trump I imagine, hence the shot to his head.

It might help but it certainly isn't 100% certainty.

People fight wars to defend democracy or to defend ideals. People have always given their lives for causes that are bigger or more important than themselves. Why is that sad? Each individual is not the most important thing in the world!

I was surprised by how many of them were women. There was the obvious women in front of him but when they get him into the car you can see at least four, possibly more of them were.

Ummmmm…care to explain why?
