Is it just me who feels that this use of the name Karen to imply unreasonable/stroppy/mean/spiteful behaviour has become Bullying?
And yes I am called Karen🤗 but whenever I see the name, along with Kevin, Sharon or Nigel used to describe ‘bad’ or ‘typical’ behaviour I feel rather sad.
I don’t think I’m generally difficult, to be honest I’m too lazy🤣🤣 & a big fan of live & let live. So the frequent references to ‘ Karen’ being nasty/mean/horrible are hard to hear & each time I do that sadness grows & I step that little bit further away to protect me.
so

AIBU it’s just a joke get over it
YANBU it is hard to constantly hear that your name means you’re mean

Somewhat lighthearted but writing this out makes me realise it really does hurt.

As long as big pop stars use it (looking at you Beyonce), I think unfortunately it will continue to be around.
It's horribly misogynistic and I'm horrified at the amount of women who join in and use it.

seedsandseeds · 14/07/2024 11:55

American community to describe a certain type of entitled white suburban woman.

Yeah, that's not racism. White people hold the power. Next.

Are you really telling someone who experiences racism how to call out racism

oh my you couldn’t make this up …

Jewish people in Israel are repeatedly being told how they should retaliate against a terrorist attack that killed hundreds.

Just because someone has experienced some sort of attack or oppression it does not mean that their retaliatory behaviour can be without scrutiny.

So no racism should not be 'called out' out by using a misogynistic slur.

HRTQueen · 14/07/2024 11:37

For you yourself it may not call out racism

but why is it for you to tell others how to call out a particular type of behaviour that is racist

It been a term used to call this behaviour out some may really dislike it but so what the point is is calling out a type of behaviour that many people have to deal with often

ChristmasFluff · 14/07/2024 11:15

Och, it's dying out anyway. It has already stopped being in the slightest bit funny, and shows up the person using it as an out-of-touch saddo, late to jump on the bandwagon. I give it 2 years and it'll be all over and there'll be a new insult to try to push women back in their box.

It isn't calling out racism.
I'm not sure what you think you are standing up for here. No one is saying racism is OK, of course it's abhorrent. But you don't call out racism by shitting on other people and experiencing racism doesn't give you the right to do that.
And stop with the snide you couldn't make this up type comments.

@jamaftercream So if you're experiencing racism then call the perpetrators racists.

Your use of "Karen" doesn't give you the moral high ground you think it does

Bc the insult Karen originated in the African American community to describe a certain type of entitled white suburban woman.

It has grown far beyond that as a means of belittling and silencing women and should be retired.

Exactly. The people pretending Karen is only used about racism know very well that's not the case. In fact the racism I see on Facebook tends to be by men and oddly they don't get called names.

seedsandseeds · 14/07/2024 02:53

JamSandle · 13/07/2024 23:13

It's sexist, ageist and has racial undertones. I'm not a fan.

It's not racist.

Yes OP I agree. I call it out as misogyny whenever I come across it.

I also love Outnumbered so will always be a Karen fan.

Karentoo · 14/07/2024 02:53

jamaftercream · 14/07/2024 02:09

It’a not about you, it’s about me experiencing racist abuse and calling the racist Karen or Ken to answer back.

Why is your upset more important than mine, who has actually experienced the abuse from the racist?

My upset is absolutely not more important than yours, but it is not a competition. None of that answers why you are using the name Karen.
It's appalling that you or anyone else is experiencing racism, but call the perpetrators what they are - racists, nasty fuckers, there's lots of retaliatory insults that woukd fit the bill. What does calling them Karen achieve?

downtownlights · 14/07/2024 02:52

Karentoo · 14/07/2024 02:04

What has the name Karen (or Ken) got to do with being racist. It's pretty upsetting having my name associated with being racist. I'm not downplaying racism at all, but why Karen?
Incidently I've never heard or seen the name Ken associated with racism, or anything else derogatory.

It's a misogynistic insult used mostly to silence women. It's absolutely time that people got called out for using it

This!!

abracadabra1980 · 14/07/2024 02:49

I think it should be retired, and also negative references to ginger hair. It's a form of bullying and I'm neither called Karen, nor am I a red head.

MrsTerryPratchett · 14/07/2024 02:41

My male manager called someone a Karen in my hearing the other day. I typically like his sense of humour but this time, "no, don't ever use that misogynistic phrase in my presence".

Agist, sexist bullshit.

I’m not surprised your post has been completely ignored by posters unfortunately.

I have been the recipient of racial abuse and I have called the perpetrators Karen or Ken.

It’s not a term I use otherwise or on social media. But if someone is racist to me, all bets are off.

I think it was one thing when it was used to describe deranged white people calling the police because a black person was out in public etc. But it seems to have extended to every time a middle aged woman expresses an opinion.

It interested me to see how it quickly it was removed on a thread earlier. MN lets some incredibly racist stuff stand but this and other silly insults are quick to be dealt with.

Laura36TTC · 14/07/2024 01:06

It gives me the ICK when I hear/see it being used as an insult.

The 3 Karen’s I know IRL are all lovely and must be annoyed at the misuse of their name

yikesanotherbooboo · 14/07/2024 01:06

It is absolutely horrible and cringeworthy. I find it particularly jarring when a woman uses the term to , let's face it. Put down another female.

Saschka · 14/07/2024 01:06

There was a post earlier this evening from a woman calling her MIL a Karen for wanting to hold her grandchild. It’s completely lost any meaning it may once have had, and now just means “woman over 40 who I don’t like”.

3catsandcounting · 13/07/2024 23:29

@hedgeoffressian I'm 61, know lots of Karen's of my age, and still stand by my observation of more women than men using the name as an insult.

Yes there are a lot of women from what I've seen using that name as an insult.

resipsa · 14/07/2024 01:00

YAdefinitelyNBU. It's my name and over the last few years I have gone from saying my name without thinking to feeling awkward for no good reason. I too judge anyone who quotes 'for the Karens' or 'calm down Karen' to refer to anyone who does something with which they disagree.

wtfissummer · 14/07/2024 00:57

Opine · 14/07/2024 00:25

@StSwithinsDay I am in a few minority groups. I really have far greater things to contend with.

@Catsmere Its a descriptor for a certain type of woman not any woman.

It's a "descriptor" for women who are called Karen. Thats it

LemonTreeGrove · 14/07/2024 00:52

People who use misogynistic words have always tried to excuse it by claiming women deserve it because they behave in a negative way that men don't.

It's amazing that in 2024 there are still people who believe women are inferior to men and deserve to be called names to shame them for it.

Maybe they'll move into the modern world one day, although they probably don't have the brain cells to do so.
