Wearing a skimpy bikini around teenage son

I'm late 40's and have recently lost alot of weight. I have treated myself to some new bikinis for an upcoming beach holiday and some are thong styles. I did originally buy the thong ones for when me and DH go away later in the year alone. But every holiday I go on abroad there is so many people younger and older than me showing all their bums! When I was a teen it was rare, but not anymore. Just not sure I'm brave enough or if it would be a massive no with adult/teen children! Wwyd?

Going against the grain here: Wear the thong! Or wear whatever you like. It’s your body.

People will judge (as is made abundantly clear in this thread). Let them.

Teenagers are likely to feel embarrassed about pretty much whatever you do. Let them.

It’s not your job to regulate other people’s feelings.

You’ll be showing your teen that you are strong minded, sure of yourself and body confident. These are great qualities to embody and role model.

It’s OK to feel attractive and to be a mother. The two are not mutually exclusive.

And, as an aside, just return from SE Asia where the vast majority of people of all ages were wearing thongs. Most people just don’t care (unlike on MN!!)

Your dad made his own pants? 😂

He did. My childhood was.....different 😂

AngelinaFibres · 10/07/2024 07:52

The Love Island women are chosen for the programme because they look a certain way ( and are all early 20s and undamaged by the ravages of pregnancy). Sadly in real life the women wearing thong bikinis and those scrunch bum leggings tend to have the flat, dropped bum of normal people. That never looks quite so good in a ' LOOK AT MY BUUUUUUM' kind of way.

UggyPow · 10/07/2024 07:51

Wow, this thread is nasty.
So glad I spent most of my youth experiencing other cultures & didn't get so hung up on the cut of a bikini.
What would all these people say if a man was making these comments about his partner?
Everyone bring so judgemental, critical etc. seriously
Wear what you feel comfortable in, wear what makes you feel good, enjoy feeling good about yourself

My parents did this in front of me and my 2 younger brothers well into our teens in the 70s. Believe me the ' cool with our bodies' thing is not having the effect you think it is. My father used to walk around the garden in the tiniest pants he could . He made them himself because he couldn't buy them in the shops. He had a sunbathing-naked area in the garden. We used to shout loudly that we were coming into the garden so he'd cover his genitals. It's the same as when you realise your forty-something parents are having sex. They're just things that teens don't want to know or see.

Maria1979 · 10/07/2024 07:47

My boys would scream murder if I put a thong on. Seriously can't you just take pride on your own and not go flaunting your bum. I get quite disgusted with seeing all those bums out and I think Im not the only one. It screams "look at me" and at 40 I think you should have passed that stage. And I'm not jeallous, I "could" get away with wearing one as I'm fit but I would not want to 1. Embarass my children 2. Having men looking at my bum 3. Making other people uncomfortable who might not fancy seeing a bum while eating their ice cream.

My son's have been used to seeing me with it all hanging out since they were born so they wouldn't bat an eyelid, even now as adults.
My daughter's have been used to seeing their dad naked from the day they were born and they wouldn't bat an eyelid even now at him being naked.
Do what you're comfortable with.

My mum went topless every family holiday as did most people in the med where we holidayed.

We survived including my teen brother.

Obviously your DS has the choice to take himself elsewhere if he's uncomfortable but it's your body.

I think the trend for thong bikinis is awful, whatever your figure and whether you have teenage kids to embarrass or not. They just look horrendous. Not classy.

I agree with this. It comes directly from porn culture. Why on earth take your inspiration from that?

CharlotteRumpling · 10/07/2024 07:46

I don't even think Hailey Bieber looks good in a thong, as posted upthread. I just don't like the look. It's very, very naff.

OhshutupBeryl · 10/07/2024 07:30

What a crock of shit.

So erudite

lovemycbf · 10/07/2024 07:43

Totally inappropriate around your son
Save the bikinis for holidays without your son as mine would literally die of embarrassment

user675654 · 10/07/2024 07:33

I’m in holiday at the moment with my two teen sons 17 and 19. They both just looked confused and says they couldn’t care less. That said, at 50 I wouldn’t wear one anyway and the only people wearing them here are the early 20s Russians.

Peonies12 · 10/07/2024 07:31

Definitely a no from me. But I think it’s nice to keep some things private and special for your partner and not show everyone at the beach / hotel.

CatrionaBalfour · 10/07/2024 07:30

Loving the comments on thongs, so funny!

CatrionaBalfour · 10/07/2024 07:30

Crumpleton · 10/07/2024 07:26

I've never seen the point in thong anything, well having said that I think some call flip flop type footwear thongs, but to me no one's arse crack needs flossing.

Edited

😂

Sondheimisademigod · 10/07/2024 06:46

Oh come off it. Nobody has a 'good body' after 40. Nature sees to that. Connective tissue and collegen are decreasing, few bits are tight.
Madonna still looks ridiculous, despite her 'toned' body.
People are not spouting bile; they are showing that they have class, whereas those who think it's ok for any middle-aged body to be on display in public, clearly are demonstrating they don't. Because class means you consider the effects of your actions on others. So thise who think they can do or say what they want, when they want, are entirely classless

What a crock of shit.

CrimpNStraighten · 10/07/2024 07:29

Well done on the weight loss.

I am sure you have a great bum. Do your teens really need to see it though?

Why not just ask them? I wouldn’t wear this but if I did I might chat to my teens. But we are very close and open about stuff.

CatrionaBalfour · 10/07/2024 07:29

cryinglaughing · 10/07/2024 07:04

Nope.
Even the most toned buttocks look faintly ridiculous.
They should be consigned to the annals of naff fashion!

Don't do it, to your son, or yourself.

Oops! I misread "annals" ! 😇😊

SummerTimeIsTheBest · 10/07/2024 07:28

As a teenage girl I would have been mortified to see my mum prancing around in a thong 😂 Forget the fact he’s a boy, it’s a thong!! Leave it until it’s just you and DH.

crostini · 10/07/2024 07:27

God people are so uptight on here.

It's the beach.... it's hot. You wear as little as possible to be comfortable. Full swimming costumes sticking to your wet stomach or bum is uncomfortable. The beach is the perfect place to wear a thong.

They are fine for whatever age. I like by the sea and the majority of people wear thong bikini from 20s to much, much older.

Crumpleton · 10/07/2024 07:26

OneBadKitty · 10/07/2024 07:24

Thongs look horrible on everyone. I don't wish to see anybody's bum cheeks on full display on the beach or round the pool, even if they are young, pert and brown. It's just not nice.

Icarus40 · 10/07/2024 07:20

I think it's less about what you look like and more about the message it gives off. To me a thong bikini says 'I feel confident and sexy '. I don't think any teen would want to be privy to that from their mum??

Mongrelsrbeautiful · 10/07/2024 07:17

Sorry OP its a firm no. My 13yo wouldn't bat an eyelid in the house, but out in public he'd just die of humiliation and probably refuse to be seen with me. That aside, they are very 1980's ( I'm older than you) and incredibly naff and try hard. Also cause thrush, in holiday conditions.
