Wearing a skimpy bikini around teenage son

I'm late 40's and have recently lost alot of weight. I have treated myself to some new bikinis for an upcoming beach holiday and some are thong styles. I did originally buy the thong ones for when me and DH go away later in the year alone. But every holiday I go on abroad there is so many people younger and older than me showing all their bums! When I was a teen it was rare, but not anymore. Just not sure I'm brave enough or if it would be a massive no with adult/teen children! Wwyd?

Again, I don't think OP is going to embarass her child to make a point (then again, she doesn't, she already said she is going to wear something else), but the thing is, kids are embarassed by so many things. I remember being embarassed by my mom laughing loudly and my dad wearing colorful shirts with wild prints. When I grew up I realized that's just how they are, living life, being happy and embracing themselves. And it's great they've never listened to me whining about how "silly" they are. I was the silly one, not them.

So to answer your question, I'm drawing a line where I see fit. Depending on the subject and circumstances it could be various things and various behaviours. However, for me bikini doesn't fall into the "immediate no" category either way.

It's not about a fashion choice. It's about a teenage boy being forced to view his middle-aged mother in a sexualised fashion - because that is what this arse-baring trend is about.

palomatoast · 10/07/2024 09:14

I have no problem with nudity but I absolutely hate those thong bikinis. On a nudist beach you'll see men and women of all ages and sizes with their saggy tits, bums and bushes out, not a care in the world. That's real body confidence and real equality.

That's a world of difference from women wearing something that looks extremely uncomfortable and straight out of a strip club with all of their hair painfully waxed off their bodies. Meanwhile the men are hanging out in board shorts and ogling the 17 year olds in their stripper gear. Yeah...there's nothing to celebrate here.

Floss might tangle them up and accidentally whip them off. Could be an unexpected win!

True but bleeding from the rectum on holiday is not 🤣

Silverstag · 10/07/2024 09:13

I think be saying thong bikini we are picturing a g string up the crack type bikini when in reality she means a cheeky bikini when more cheek is showing. On the last few holidays I've been on these have been predominantly what I've seen worn at the beach and nobody cares. To be honest full bum coverage was in the minority and generally worn by the over 60's and I felt like I stood out more for my big bikini bottoms than I would in a skimpier pair. Take the bikini and see how you feel when there. I really don't think your son should have a problem if it's the norm on the beach. A thong however is rarely seen and I would say that would be going too far on a family trip.

Then where do you draw the line?

It's really not a big deal to wear a swimsuit with an arse in it, I find it weird that people would be happy to embarrass their kids to make some kind of "point."

I’m going to have dinner tonight wearing a basque and stockings because apparently according to some on here any items of clothing are acceptable in front of family if you feel good in them.

Great and more power to you. In fact, many people in my office enjoy wearing corset waists on occasion, comes in handy with a lot of styles, haha.

I think children's opinion about their parents' wardrobe might be taken under consideration but this is not a must. After all, a parent is still their own person first and a parent second. As others said, not every choice, especially personal/style-related one should be centred around the kid. It could be, but it doesn't need to.

OakTree16 · 10/07/2024 09:05

Nope. My ds is 12 and I have quite a nice figure but I’m doing high waisted bikinis on holiday (I love that style anyway). I would never wear a thong one Infront or him, or just ever really…

Not quite the same as wearing a bikini on a beach holiday though is it.

Beezknees · 10/07/2024 08:59

Well, I actually do value my child's opinion.

I have no problem with thong bikinis as a whole, but I would not wear one in front of my DS if it made him feel uncomfortable.

But why would you PURPOSELY do it? I think it's a really immature mindset to say fuck it I'll do what I want and never mind what my child thinks.

strawberryteacake · 10/07/2024 09:02

Realistically, nobody wants to see your flabby arse-cheeks. It is poor parenting to subject a teenage boy to that sight.

Beezknees · 10/07/2024 09:01

LuckySantangelo35 · 10/07/2024 08:58

@Beezknees

she isn’t purposely doing it though, she’s just wearing a bikini that she likes. Believe it or not, not every single choice a mother makes is centred on her offspring!

I wouldn't unnecessarily embarrass my child if I could avoid it.

HarrytheHobbit · 10/07/2024 09:00

Nay, nay and thrice nay.

willWillSmithsmith · 10/07/2024 09:00

I’d feel just as uncomfortable if it was my son’s very lovely gf. As another pp said, it’s for the spectator not the wearer as they don’t get to see their own peachy derrière.

Thong bikinis seem very statement to me and that statement is look at meeee! Fine if it’s aimed at your partner but not for anyone else thank you.

Of course I’m sure there are lots of people who very much enjoy getting an eyeful of all the female bums on display (but I’m not one of them).

"Purposely" isn't exatly the right word here, because you're hardly wearing something in order to spite your kids. At least OP certainly doesn't.
However, when you want to wear the clothes that you know would make you feel good about yourself, there is nothing wrong with it. This one would be on purpose, yes, and purposely making yourself feel great with a nice item you enjoy wearing isn't a crime. People would have opinions either way, I don't see why it should matter in the context of socially acceptable clothes (and bikini is socially acceptable, whether you like it or not).

This, 100%. Why aren’t men wearing this crap?

Men wear shorts with nothing else (self conscious men will wear a tshirt too). Some men wear speedos but tend to get the piss taken out of them for it even though they are far more practical.
Women generally have to keep their top half covered though some choose to go topless. We can wear board shorts with bikini tops/swimsuits, just bikinis or just swimsuits. We can wear a swimsuits with swim leggings if we choose. We have so much more choice. My personal choice is whatever easiest to get off if I need a wee. So normally a bikini. And my body is not banging, I just put comfort before anything else.

Edingril · 10/07/2024 08:57

KathrynWheel · 10/07/2024 08:43

It's not "people" wearing them though. It's Women. I personally think they look awful but if you want to wear one go ahead. I'm not "shaming other women" or "pulling them down" but I am for equality. People can only buy what's available to them, unless they can make their own beachwear. My point is, why aren't these thongs designed and produced for men? they must be desperate to wear them too.

Those tiny ones mem wear look just as bad except thankfully there is less backside on show, if I am sat eating my fish and chips last thing I want to see it bits hanging around or out from men or women

I am beginning to be very suspicious of this neo-liberal Western mindset that women showing as much of their bodies as possible is women's empowerment. If so, why are the men not doing it? Why is Kanye West wearing huge baggy clothes while dragging his wife around in a thong?

Indeed. All we have here is the age old message, that if you have the sort of body men might admire, show it to them so they can enjoy it. The repackaging of this as 'empowerment' to square the inevitable conflict with feminism is very manipulative.

AhBiscuits · 10/07/2024 08:56

When it's normal for men to show their entire arses to the world then I'll consider it too.

MagnoliatheMagnificent · 10/07/2024 08:55

I don't like seeing the bottoms! Nope.
A few years ago my friend was on a beach holiday wearing a thong bikini and ended up doing CPR on a lady on the beach. I wasn't even there but I'm scarred by the image!! Who knows what the other people on the beach thought. Keep your pants on (and not the thong ones!)
