War in Ukraine

blackcherryconserve · 08/07/2024 14:58

In today's news Russia has bombed a children's hospital in Kiev. Where is the uproar at a loss of life of 40 and increasing as I write?
I am wondering why Stop The War coalition group never demonstrates against Russia's brutal invasion of Ukraine on a regular basis and they do on Israel/Gaza.
There is no subject heading on MN to discuss the ongoing war, unlike Conflict in the Middle East? Why is that? Are Ukrainian lives lesser than others?

I’m sorry about the children’s hospital, but what a fucking cheek of a thread. Other than maybe Farage, this country has 100% backed Ukraine, despite us having no cultural ties. The war is in the press daily, Putin is criticised daily with sanctions on his cronies.

We’ve taken in thousands of Ukrainian’s, have given Ukraine billions when we ourselves are in a financial hole, and you’re jealous because people are marching in support of Gazan’s?

There is no ‘Homes for Gaza’ scheme, no billions for arms etc. At least 40,000 civilians dead. Maybe Ukraine and Gaza should do a swap in regard to the UK’s affections. Would you like that? Thought not.

And why can’t you go and march? Is anyone stopping you?

What a spiteful thread,

Edited

I absolutely agree with you on this but Mumsnet is full of hypocrites - no capacity to see the full picture

But we expect Israel to throw down its arms while the western world appears to be appeasing Russian aggression. Have we learned nothing from history?

No one is appeasing Russia. That is insane!

Aussieland · 18/08/2024 08:14

blackcherryconserve · 08/07/2024 15:17

But demonstrations will reach Putin's ears.
I don't agree that our demonstrations over one war where we have limited ability to change things prevents us from demonstrating against another, especially when that war is on Europe's borders.

Putin doesn’t care about demonstrations. Zero shits given what we all think.

Russia/Ukraine is a clear aggressor/defender situation. The UK is supporting Ukraine. Protests will not change anything.

Israel/Gaza is much more complex. The “goodies” and “baddies” are interwoven and the people suffering are overwhelmingly civilians.

The protests are aiming to demonstrate to the government to encourage supporting the Gazan people (not Hamas which is very different) and getting any remaining surviving hostages released (not supporting Israel without question).

I don't understand why Ukraine has invaded the Kursk region in Russia.
Two wrongs don't make a right.

And why poke the bear ?

Poke the bear? You mean appease a dictator?

Because they hope it will put pressure on Putin to end the invasion. I don't think it will but Ukraine are in a difficult position and want any leverage they can get.

Notice how Russia are headline news straight away but so much that Israel has done goes unreported? The media wants you to hate Russia and back Israel. You could march in support of Ukraine, there's absolutely nothing stopping you is there?

My feelings towards russia are mine. I don't need the "media" to tell me what to think

Everything that Israel does as far as Gaza is concerned is reported everywhere, not least on Mumsnet
This particular strike by Russia is the first one reported in detail for ages. Because it was deliberately on a children's hospital!

putin couldn’t care less what we think.

I am currently in a country where most of those around me are Russian. The animosity is palpable and very unpleasant.

wtfissummer · 09/07/2024 19:44

It's good that posts about Ukraine are not relegated to a sub topic

The CITME section is just the same few posters, posting the same things for pages and pages

I'd hate Ukraine topics to end up
Like that

OhmygodDont · 08/07/2024 20:50

HappierTimesAhead · 08/07/2024 20:47

Why?

Probably because then it would never be on the main boards so unless people where looking for it it would never be seen.

HappierTimesAhead · 08/07/2024 20:47

nomoretoriesforme · 08/07/2024 20:47

As far as I remember , it was offered to create an entire board for Ukraine but it was refused by main posters on Ukraine thread. They didn't want that.

Why?

Showmetheelf56 · 08/07/2024 16:52

There is an ENTIRE BOARD dedicated to the Conflict in the Middle East, yet people are having a go at the OP for asking why there isn't a single thread on this latest Russian atrocity. "Go the the Ukraine chat thread" really doesn't cut it. There is huge hypocrisy here.

sprigatito · 08/07/2024 18:57

Our government isn't arming or funding Russia. That's the difference in terms of public protests. We are protesting our own government's craven and disgusting collusion in appalling and illegal atrocities.

I find it hard to understand your insinuation that the UK hasn't shown sufficient support for, and outrage on behalf of, Ukrainians. I think we have pulled out all the stops, personally - but for the reasons given, large-scale public protests against Russia aren't part of that response.

Mummy2024 · 08/07/2024 18:52

Of course we arnt appeasing putin.... Ukraine Is still being supported financially and in other ways by the UK and it's also a risk to ourselves as we are now considered proxy partners in it. No ones asking for the help for ukraine to stop though are they....

I think it's not on actually to say because we arnt protesting something he won't see and doesn't affect him means we're appeasing him. He doesn't care what we think or want he hates us....

That almost always happens so people can hide the whole topic and don’t have to see any threads.

And the reason there were so many was because of differences of opinion over blame and the U.K. position. Ukraine is different in that nobody really believes that the blame lies anywhere but wholly Russia and the U.K. are already sanctioning Russia and providing support to Ukraine. Arguably not enough support but I doubt that there is that much nuance on the Middle East threads.

I’s be surprised if in 18months there are more than a couple of long running threads on Israel/Gaza. War fatigue will set in there too.

HappierTimesAhead · 08/07/2024 18:06

You think it's tedious? I'm sure the Ukrainian people are finding it a bit more than tedious. Wars go on for a long time

Indeed they do, so you can’t really Expect it outrage and front cover news to continue every day forever, unless it directly affects your country.

As someone else said the reason Gaza/Isreal hits the papers still is because there is arguments over which side is right or wrong within certain actions. Everyone agrees Putin shouldn’t invade, the end. Now it’s just supplying arms and cash till one side gives up.

midgetastic · 08/07/2024 18:09

I think there is more general agreement who is the aggressor in the Ukraine conflict and perhaps a feeling that the uk government and the population are pretty well aligned and that the current uk actions including sanctions for example are appropriate

Whereas with the other conflict - there is a lot of differences of opinion with many people surprised that there is no action against Israel

Perhaps also the deaths in the Ukraine war have been mostly troops as opposed to mostly civilians?

OP is ignoring these direct answers.

It's almost like they're not actually interested in Ukraine, and the only point of the original post was to criticise the gaza protest marches.

Wow. Did you miss the point that I have Ukrainian ancestry?

I am very invested in the huge loss of life at the hands of the Russians. I have noted the threads on Chat but that doesn't prevent me from pursuing this one or is that not allowed?
