To feel quite upset - just got told by a stranger to get out of his fucking way

Was walking badk from the shops this morning and swerved to avoid a puddle on one side and another walker approaching me on th other side.

Whilst doing this, I was pretty much neck and neck with a guy who told me off for walking in front of him. I apologised and said I hadn’t meant to but wanted to avoid the puddle and the other guy. He then said, ‘avoid me!’ and then ‘get out of my fucking way’.

i know this is a tiny thing in the grand scheme of things but it upset me. I’ve never ever had this. It was like road rage, but between walkers.

I understand I shouldn’t have been in his way and walked in front of him and changed direction, but I explained why I did it and I didn’t deserve for him to speak to me so rudely. I said to him that he’d been very rude and he just strode off without saying anything.

Obviously he thinks he’s completely in the right, and maybe he’s also having a bad day, but it gives him no right at all to speak to me like that.

but then they would have started their own thread about being upset because someone use the word "fuck" 😂

"fuck off" is a personal attack, get off my" fucking" way just someone swearing... 😂

Both pretty much the same

We used to have a mantra as cabin crew regarding rude customers -
someone has to live with him, luckily not us, we’ve only got to spend a short amount of time with them!
it comes in quite useful in everyday life too! It doesn’t matter whether you stepped in front of him or not. You didn’t do it on purpose and you apologised. He’s just an impatient, rude man who’s going to give himself a heart attack one day if he over reacts to simple situations all the time! Let it go over you.

Very good advice.
He's such an important person, he shouldn't have to look where he's going or use his eyes to stop a blockage on the pavement that people will have to walk around. He's on a par with the President, everyone should make way for him and not delay his magnificent progress for a single second.

I know how you feel, I was once in the park with DC and eldest was attempting and failing to climb a tree, just hugging it really. An agressive drunk came up and started shouting right in my face (with spittal) that my very small DC was damaging a tree. I grabbed the DC and exited asap, but was really shaken by the unexpected aggressive shouting, and it stayed with me for a while after, worrying about what could have happened.

But people are right, feel what you feel and try to forget about it. He probably has a horrible life if he treats people like that.

No wonder he swore if you suddenly veered in front of him. I've sworn at thoughtless idiots who do this too especially if I have heavy bags and I become unbalanced.

Put this out of your head but learn from it so you don't do it again. Always check behind you if you need to change direction even if ambling along (I hope you aren't a driver btw). Just think if he was coming up fast he could have accidentally bumped you into oncoming traffic and you'd end up really hurt (seen it happen).

Weird how I've got through life never swearing at other pedestrians

Isthisreasonable · 06/07/2024 13:17

He was obviously in a hurry to get to his penis enlargement appointment. Don't give him headspace.

Let's not pretend that men and women behaving in the same way doesn't solicit two very different emotional responses.

which is the problem of the one responding, not the problem of the "swearer"

Many of us manage not to have emotional responses on non-events, don't insult us all, thank you.

I have to tell my 6 year old to watch where they're walking and be mindful of others. My 8 year old has gotten the memo. How old are you OP?

Rude.

IMustDoMoreExercise · 06/07/2024 13:09

Just feel sad for him. He must have such a miserable life to behave like that.

Just be happy that you are not like that.

Greenlittecat · 06/07/2024 13:05

What a bully! He obviously has deeper issues but that doesn't mean the way he treated you was right. I'm sorry.

If this ever happens with me I just smile and stop for them. Takes 2 seconds, doesn't need to be a big deal.

Try not to give it another thought OP ❤

I went into his path fairly suddenly, yes, as I was also trying to avoid roadworks and a puddle, and another walker coming our way from the r opposite direction, so I didn’t really know where to go and just thought I would quickly go in front of him, but I know I judged that badly now.

It happens! If you had walked in front of me in that way, and apologised, I would be absolutely fine with it. It’s such a tiny thing and the weather is shocking today we are just trying to get by aren’t we???!!!!

I’m sure you have had many occasions of waiting for the other person. We all do it, it happens. Completely out of order for that wanker to behave as he did.

i hope the rest of your weekend is wanker free. I can’t guarantee it will be puddle free!

IMBCRound2 · 06/07/2024 12:08

I had someone punch me in the head once after we did the whole stepping into each others way trying to avoid each other…. Just turned around and punched me.

walker rage is right

That is truly shocking. I know people on here are saying she should have have told him to eff off but if he’s that verbally aggressive who’s to say he wouldn’t be physically too.

It’s not nice way to behave and shows him up to be an ignorant jerk, which is why I keep those impatient thoughts to myself in similar situations.

crockofshite · 06/07/2024 12:45

It's a 'man' thing

Some of them are just cunts.

It's not you, it's them

Be thankful you don't have to wake up next to it.

theveryhungrybum · 06/07/2024 12:43

Men are programmed by society to take up space - they are loud, large and spread themselves out. Women are programmed to not take up space, and to make accommodations for everyone around us.
Take up space, and don't feel bad about it.

Haha always one on these posts hiding behind their keyboards anonymously acting the fool. Fingers crossed your 6 and 8 year old don’t take it after you 🤡

I don't think the pp was saying that. Obviously women can be ignorant as well. I think she was alluding to the fact that alot of women encounter men behaving a way they would not do so to other men. And yes I have been run into by many a pushchair, they're usually the same candidates who fling their dcs out into the road in a disgusting dangerous attempt to stop traffic!

Like meercats? Wow! I've never seen this. That's awful. I think I'd have to say something if I did.

Epicaricacy · 06/07/2024 12:35

I still think his reaction was completely unnecessary and out of proportion to what I did though.

I think your own reaction is the one completely out of proportion. He didn't even call you a "fucking something", he just said to get out of his fucking way. He used a swear word. Is that REALLY such a massive deal?

Do you always react so strongly when you hear the word "fuck"?

You don't have to swear, I am not a big fan of swearing but come on, get a grip. It's such a non-event, how can you make it such a big deal?

Liv999 · 06/07/2024 12:31

RisingSunn · 06/07/2024 12:27

Acapulco12 · 06/07/2024 12:21

Yes, in a way, but he shouldn’t get away with saying it to everyone else!

It shouldn’t just give him free rein to just say it to certain people because he knows he won’t get a big physical/verbal reaction from them.

He needs to behave respectfully to everyone, not just those bigger and more powerful than him. This is something we all know and something we teach kids from when they’re really young. It’s basic human decency.

Yes I’d like to think we all teach human decency to our children.

But the fact remains, he was fortunate he didn’t react like this with the wrong person.

It’s not just about size. There are people from both genders and sizes that would not take that kind of verbal abuse on the chin. That is my point.

fieldsofbutterflies · 06/07/2024 12:26

Let's be honest, he wouldn't have said it to a bloke - some men just like the fact that they can shout at women and intimidate them.

I remember being out with a couple of the dogs I walk, and we met a man with his collie. All the dogs were off the lead and it was on a wet, muddy path in a wet, muddy field. The dogs met and were having a play, and one of mine shook and got some mud on this man's trousers - he had a right go at me for it.

He went all red in the face and was properly shouting - I somehow got up the courage to ask him why he felt that shouting at a lone female was an appropriate way to behave. He went even redder and just walked off muttering to himself, lol.

I've seen him a few times since (small area) and he just looks the other way every time!
