To feel quite upset - just got told by a stranger to get out of his fucking way

Was walking badk from the shops this morning and swerved to avoid a puddle on one side and another walker approaching me on th other side.

Whilst doing this, I was pretty much neck and neck with a guy who told me off for walking in front of him. I apologised and said I hadn’t meant to but wanted to avoid the puddle and the other guy. He then said, ‘avoid me!’ and then ‘get out of my fucking way’.

i know this is a tiny thing in the grand scheme of things but it upset me. I’ve never ever had this. It was like road rage, but between walkers.

I understand I shouldn’t have been in his way and walked in front of him and changed direction, but I explained why I did it and I didn’t deserve for him to speak to me so rudely. I said to him that he’d been very rude and he just strode off without saying anything.

Obviously he thinks he’s completely in the right, and maybe he’s also having a bad day, but it gives him no right at all to speak to me like that.

Okay he probably shouldn’t have sworn at you. But I would definitely have sworn under my breath if someone did that to me.

completely oblivious people do my head in, I know I am sometimes too (so I’m sure people get mad at me too), but whenever I’m in homebargins (and 99% of the time it’s home bargins 😂) people just stop in the middle of an aisle, or they swing their basket or trolley round, or they basically walk into me, and it always seems like they have no idea you’re there. And I always mutter under my breath 😂 and I can’t help but think, do you have no awareness of what is around you, or do you have so much self importance. It happens in car parks too, people just wander out. It baffles me honestly. Vast majority of the time I’m constantly checking where people are, so I don’t walk into them or whatever 😂

What bit did you not read? She admitted cutting someone up, she apologised to the man. It was his disgusting manners that the op is talking about.

StormingNorman · 06/07/2024 14:25

You basically cut someone up. It’s annoying. Get over it now.

Hb7x3 · 06/07/2024 14:23

Swearing isn't always aggressive, violent and harmful.

It has positive effects on a lot of people. Ever wondered why so many comedians are rude and swear?

Obviously not in op's situation.

your bitchy comments are getting a bit boring now. Jog on.

CountryMouse22 · 06/07/2024 14:13

I had this happen to me years ago in Oxford Street! Man coming towards me brushed past me and told me to f* off. Totally unwarranted. I was quite upset. He was wearing a Russell & Bromley badge!

What a shit load of bollocks.

you don't seem to know very much about it. Swear words are stored in a different area of the brain to normal language, for example, so it is possible to lose the ability to use one, but not the other. I have cared for several people who have sustained brain damage who have lost the ability to speak all other words except swear words.

There is an argument that these were probably the very first spoken language humans had, although they may have been in the form of clicks. And all other language developed from this.

Hedgeoffressian · 06/07/2024 14:09

There’s a lot of wankers out there unfortunately. I was driving home from work the other day and held back a fraction of a second because I didn’t want to be side by side with a double decker bus at the entrance on to a roundabout just off the bypass. It was literally a second or 2. Because I did this it warranted the man in the flashy Range Rover behind me giving me the finger. It’s total arrogance. They think they are better than you but they are just arseholes.

There's a few posters on here I wouldn't want to bump into irl!

You might have no choice if you walk within 10m of OP.

swearing is the displacement for violence. Your brain interprets it as violence. This is why it is so important not to allow swear words to become so common place that they are not a substitute for violence, and people then move straight to actual violence rather than this intermediate step. It is also why it is so upsetting to be sworn at.

What a shit load of bollocks.

We used to have a mantra as cabin crew regarding rude customers -
someone has to live with him, luckily not us, we’ve only got to spend a short amount of time with them!
it comes in quite useful in everyday life too! It doesn’t matter whether you stepped in front of him or not. You didn’t do it on purpose and you apologised. He’s just an impatient, rude man who’s going to give himself a heart attack one day if he over reacts to simple situations all the time! Let it go over you.

And we can also spit in your dinner or drink so be rude to us at your peril 😜

ilovelamp82 · 06/07/2024 13:41

Anyone who is willing to talk to a stranger like that is really not worth worrying about. And there's no way that someone would be that angry about someone stepping in front of them without something else on their mind, so try not to let it get to you and but it down to him having a bad day.

Meraas · 06/07/2024 13:41

Men feel entitled to spaces, over and above women.

I’ve got really good at telling these men to fuck off immediately.

Viviennemary · 06/07/2024 13:40

He was rude and aggressive. But you should take more care when avoiding puddles. Somebody could have been injured because of your thoughtless for others.

Ah, that explains why I'd probably be rolling about in the puddle fighting with the cheeky prick!

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 06/07/2024 13:33

It can be hard not to take these insults personally, OP. I tend to dwell on things like this. Maybe get satisfaction from imagining this person walking off swearing to himself and dropping suddenly down a manhole?

I was sworn at out running with my dog, when a pelaton of cyclists came down the hill after us. I was well ahead, so waited for them to get closer before moving onto the grass verge, and had 'get that fucking dog out of the road!' yelled at me when the men were still a good fifty metres away (it doesn't take THAT long to get up onto the verge). Clearly training for the Olympics... I did dwell but took much pleasure in imagining a) what his fellow cyclists said to him after the ride (all the others were politeness personified and called 'thank you' to me for moving over) and b) him falling off his bike round the next corner. Slightly mean, but it helped.

I have to tell my 6 year old to watch where they're walking and be mindful of others. My 8 year old has gotten the memo. How old are you OP?

Haha always one on these posts hiding behind their keyboards anonymously acting the fool. Fingers crossed your 6 and 8 year old don’t take it after you 🤡

I bet he would have managed to keep a lid on his aggression if it had been a well-built bloke who had got in his way.

Absolutely!

OP. I'm sorry this happened to you. Even though it was about him, I would have been upset too.
