Is there money to do what Labour wants to do?

The majority of us are feeling optimistic today and we should!

However my concern is, is there the money to do what Labour needs to do? I keep thinking back to Gordon Brown selling off our gold!

The money on Rwanda has already been spent so no hope of getting that back.

Great 😤 it’s absolutely criminal how reckless he’s been with our money.

I thought it was Tony Blair who instigated PFI 🤔

Yep, it definitely was Tony Blair who set up the PFI's. My DH was a civil servant and he had to manage many of them. He used to be frustrated at how much it was all costing and it kicked the cost down the road too.

This 👆

We currently have the highest rate of tax for over 70 years. If waste stops, stupid contracts that line the pockets of the Conservative party's chums, Rwanda stops, etc. etc. there might not be a need to raise taxes. I know that a lot goes on paying back borrowing, but even then.

Historically, Labour spend, Conservatives cut back, however many of the best things were brought in by the Labour government which takes money. Labour Have also presided over higher GDP growth, and lower levels of unemployment.

If more people are working, and GDP growth is good, then people are earning which makes them less susceptible to tax rises.

Starmer strikes me as considered and targeted in his approach.

I hope so!

It was awful under the tories IMO so if they had got re-elected yet again I’d definitely have been packing my bags now I’m more open to seeing how things go . I was already wanting to leave after GE 2019 but then covid scuppered my plans.

Now, it’s a new party and all that so I’ll give them a chance. I get that it won’t exactly take a short time to turn things around, but I need to see they’re moving in the right direction.

I hope under this government more people get back into work and also salaries rise! Because it’s ridiculous both how low the pay is here and how so many people are out of work.

Yeah once they drop Rwanda and national service and paying all their mates money

Should be fine 👍🏻

Nothing was spent on National Service as Sunak knew he was going down so no money to be recouped there. The money on Rwanda has already been spent so no hope of getting that back.

There’s plenty of money for the right investments, that’s the thing about investing- you invest well you can expect a return. If you’re good at investing you’ll get people (or banks really usually) who will give you money to invest. A good government is good at investing on behalf of its people, and ideally the benefits of those investments are distributed fairly well across the population.
HS2, inappropriate PPE? These were bad investments. Education and training ungraded? Likely good investments, but then failure to invest in health and public health could undermine those investments if poor health impacts on the workforce and burden to the health and care system to such an extent that productivity is lost.

Starmer probably looks like a nice safe pair of hands so he will find it easier to “find the money” than say crazy eyes Truss. He’ll have to say he won’t spend a penny more than is needed and that he’s going to keep debt down etc etc because that’s the nature of the poker game, but if he has any sense he’ll quietly invest like crazy in the things that matter to growth and prosperity without trying to catch too much glory for either being mean to poor people or showing how generous “he” is to the nation. I imagine he’ll use the next few months of political capital to make the big unglitzy long term investments he needs to make to avert disaster.

@MissAmbrosia are wages higher too? Genuine question, I’ve no idea. In my last job I earned under £22k for f/t (37.5 hours per week). I’m lucky that I have a fantastic husband who has a good pension and can do some consultancy work. The people I worked with who were on their own in rented accommodation really struggled.

None of the parties that have been in power in my 44 years have ever done anything to help single, childless, low-paid people.

Or just even single and childfree people but yes especially the low paid ones.

A friend of mine was getting no help at all when her mum made her homeless, and then she became unemployed thanks to her ex (long story). it just broke her down and she signed off on disability where she finally got some support (housing & disability income etc ) Without being on disability - being single without a child she’d have got next to nothing.

It’s really messed up that the way they have made things with rising rent and house prices against a backdrop of low pay, it’s like you need two incomes to live independently.

So many single thirty somethings are moving back home but what if the ones who don’t have a nice family to go back to? . You should be able to live on one income.

Personally I'd rather pay more tax for good quality health services, social housing, education, policing, probation and social care. I'm a higher rate tax payer and feel under-taxed. I'm sure I'm not the only one.

(Just to be clear I don't think lower rate earners should be taxed more, far from it...)

I also think corporations need to be taxed more effectively - it's not right that massive companies like Facebook are able to dodge tax when they make so much money in this country (and do little social good).

My exact thoughts!

They will tax us for everything, garden, inheritance,VAT for private school fees. Basically anyone who has worked hard and earns a decent amount of money will be taxed to the limit

I don’t believe they will actually be able to deal with companies like Google so it will come down to the little guy, the business owners etc and the higher earners whol are relatively wealthy but nothing in comparison to the corporations…

But this is easy game

So true

I don’t believe they will actually be able to deal with companies like Google so it will come down to the little guy,

You owe the taxman £10k they've got you by the balls. You owe them £10mil you've got them by the balls. Or something to that effect I read once!

tennesseewhiskey1 · 05/07/2024 23:39

Sorry - NOW you ask or wonder this?! After it’s all said and done and labour is in?!

Indeed this. I cannot believe so many people voted for this.

All of these people who are saying they don't want to pay more tax, do you already pay to send you kids to private school and pay for private health care?

Surely the only alternative to not raising taxes and borrowing is privatisation of the NHS. Do you want that instead?

Yes! The health care bills on top of tax = 100 k a year, I would be very happy to pay extra tax if I didn’t then have the medical bills (for a chronic illness- majorly under funded in U.K.)

The uk does not have incredibly high taxation Hmm

Most of the developed European democracies have much higher taxation and much better public services

And much higher salaries to manage it!

Nope. Booked in a meeting with the family lawyer for this week to look at IHT planning as I think there will be some big raids on that and CGT.

id love to know what your solicitor can suggest re IHT planning as two solicitor’s I have spoken to on this subject were not able to reduce my anticipated bill at all! Divorced or single people do not have seem to have many options.

I’m not a detractor. Cutting tax evasion and corruption would be a good start.

I'd be very disappointed if Labour doesn't address these issues.

PoppyCherryDog · 05/07/2024 23:09

MissyB1 · 05/07/2024 18:01

Agree, We are higher rate tax payers (well dh is, I earn minimum wage). But dh says he would happily pay more tax for improved public services.

This. I’d happily pay more income tax for good public services.

They promised not to go after income tax or VAT. My understanding is they plan to increase CGT and something about agricultural land? (Didn’t quite understand it though…) but my point is there are other types of tax other than income tax.

They’re coming for every working person. Nat insurance up. Income tax up. Inheritance tax up. I just hope they spend it all wisely.

Conservatives have implemented over 25 tax rises, so probably not much need to raise anymore. Just stop squandering what is raised already and spend it more wisely.

SeriaMau · 05/07/2024 22:59

If Labour don't engage in an enormous spending spree to reverse the impact of 14 years of Conservative austerity and public sector neglect, they'll be accused by everyone on both the left and the right of failure and hypocrisy.

If they do signficantly increase public spending and have to raise taxes to fund this, the right will shout about 'same old tax and spend Labour'.

So maybe some of the detractors here would like to explain what they think Labour can or should do to improve the state of public services and the country.

Says nothing about her plans.

One person casting their vote in a general election won't make a difference, but people still vote.

It's ok. You won't be phoning HMRC in the morning to donate money to HM Treasury despite being happy to do so. I get it.

Why are people still banging on about Gordon Brown selling (half of) the gold, when the Tories have sold public assets worth ten times as much since? Huge chunks of the NHS, Northern Rock, RBS and Lloyds’ shares, London Fire Brigade, most of our police stations, our stake in Eurostar, Royal Mail and lots more…

All while tripling the debt, plus the whole Trusterfuck. We’ve had years of listening to people bleating on about how “Labour have bankrupted the country”. Yet when the Tories do it on steroids, nobody even blinks. Labour may have spent a fortune, but at least we had jobs and excellent public services to show for it. The Tories sold off the family silver, hoiked up the debt (even before Covid) and we’ve had nothing to show for it.

Some people have quite a lot to show for it.
Michelle Mone for one.

No... but they will try to tax us all within an inch of our lives to try to do so (well those of us who don't leave the U.K. of course)

Do send a postcard.

LameBorzoi · 05/07/2024 22:49

TheThingIsYeah · 05/07/2024 22:46

@LameBorzoi

It's not silly though is it? The government may or may not increase tax. In the meantime, why can't those who are "happy to pay more tax" take the initiative and do just that?

The rest of us who aren't happy will just pay more when we have no choice in the matter.

Because one person doing it won't make a difference.
