Is there money to do what Labour wants to do?

The majority of us are feeling optimistic today and we should!

However my concern is, is there the money to do what Labour needs to do? I keep thinking back to Gordon Brown selling off our gold!

The Tories are feeling a bit sore, let them have their moan I guess

the UK already has incredibly high taxes and most people that I have spoken to would not happily be taxed more. Taxing people more is not the answer and will only fuck people over more, better money management is the answer.

It’s not about taxing lower incomes more or even medium rate tax payers.

We are all relatively skint.

They should be taxing the super rich. There’s loads of them. My mate is currently working on a 250million pound yacht. There’s 200 staff for one dude to have his eggs cooked right in the morning. This kind of wealth disparity is happening more and more, whilst the rest of us are bumming around for scraps. It’s not on and should be rightfully corrected. Companies that pay no or very little tax should also be made to pay. The money should go directly into public services.

Indeed this. I cannot believe so many people voted for this.

I don’t think they did. Only on Mumsnet do these middle to high earners (or of course their DHs) fall over themselves to pay more tax.

MrsMurphyIWish · 06/07/2024 06:14

Bloody hell - give them a chance!

I don’t know what the future holds, but as a teacher who has spent the last 14 years see Gove destroy the curriculum, funding cut year after year, and just generally felt like teachers are not valued as the professionals we are, I walked into school a little lighter yesterday as I remembered how much better it was teaching under a Labour government.

There’s a lot of doom mongering on this thread. All I imagine is that there must be a lot of wealth of privilege if you haven’t suffered any financial hardship over the past 14 years. Under austerity I had my wages frozen and any pay rises in the past few years have been way below inflation. That was done for the good of the country under the Tories but I didn’t see any improvement to society - public services just got worse.

Bagwyllydiart · 06/07/2024 05:52

There is plenty of money to do what they want to do.

Trouble is, that money is in OUR pockets and they will come for it.

NashvilleQueen · 06/07/2024 05:40

Whereas the past two years have been a prudent fiscal dream haven't they?

Six weeks of endless tedious 'don't vote Labour threads' and now in under 24 hours scaremongering about all the wrongs you think the new government will do. Despite the fact that there appears to be a cabinet appointed for talent and skills which is quite the novelty after the past few years.

How exactly would the Tories have improved waiting lists or education or delivered Rwanda or the need for working families to use food banks AND kept cutting taxes?

Or maybe you don't care about any of that because you've 'worked hard' (conveniently overlooking the fact that millions who struggle have also done so) and you don't want to contribute towards better services.

No there is no money left. Again.

But Labour will borrow even more and tax even more than the Tories did.

If you’re a net contributor, prepare to be rinsed even more. If you’re a net taker, happy days, your freebies are about to multiply. Until, finally the IMF decides to step in.

The country is doomed.

They can't just borrow more though as the Conservatives have emptied that pot too. We have lost our triple A credit rating, and so borrowing us more expensive and we have a larger debt than the GDP which is never good.

Besides which, we were doomed as a result of Brexshit, so it is really a moot point. It will take decades to undo that mess, and ultimately, the Conservatives had no plan either, so we can't be worse off with a change.

caringcarer · 06/07/2024 00:08

Nothing was spent on National Service as Sunak knew he was going down so no money to be recouped there. The money on Rwanda has already been spent so no hope of getting that back.

Ongoing payments can be stopped though.

trainplanesleep · 05/07/2024 23:32

They will tax us for everything, garden, inheritance,VAT for private school fees. Basically anyone who has worked hard and earns a decent amount of money will be taxed to the limit

I don’t believe they will actually be able to deal with companies like Google so it will come down to the little guy, the business owners etc and the higher earners whol are relatively wealthy but nothing in comparison to the corporations…

But this is easy game

Historically, that hasn't happened either. Besides, the Conservatives have cost me my entire living with Brexshit. If Labour get the economy going again, and I get back into work at the level I was, I would be paying higher rate tax. And for this, under the Conservatives, there were no local NHS dentists forcing me to go private, and I can never get to see a GP.

I would happily pay and extra percent to solve both of those as it would probably cost me less than the private dentist does.

HappiestSleeping · 06/07/2024 05:25

Andanotherone01 · 05/07/2024 23:19

And much higher salaries to manage it!

And higher costs in shops, so it all balances out. One cannot just look at the part of the equation that suits the argument, it has to be taken as a whole comparator.

HappiestSleeping · 06/07/2024 05:23

caringcarer · 06/07/2024 00:10

Yep, it definitely was Tony Blair who set up the PFI's. My DH was a civil servant and he had to manage many of them. He used to be frustrated at how much it was all costing and it kicked the cost down the road too.

If you mean Private Finance Initiative by PFI, it was John Major in 1992. Blair expanded it.

The squeezed middle can find pastures new too if that’s what they want if they think the country’s doomed. Or just if they want a better life. There is better pay to be had in many of the surrounding countries so you might not even have go that far

That’s not true either. I would go tomorrow but we are pension trapped by my husband’s job.

Glengarrybell · 06/07/2024 01:15

WinterMorn · 06/07/2024 01:02

@Glengarrybell that’s the exact problem though…..what about the squeezed middle who aren’t commanding high salaries?

You know what Labour wants to do!? 🤣 please share!

It’s quite exciting really. Feel like I have bought a lucky dip at the fair and no idea whats in the bag.

Greengagesnfennel · 06/07/2024 00:58

Even Keir and Rachel don’t know that yet. Closer to the answer than yesterday though….

Glengarrybell · 06/07/2024 00:55

WinterMorn · 06/07/2024 00:43

Hmmmmm, because it’s that easy isn’t it?

Easier than staying in a doomed country I would have thought? Especially if you command a high salary. I’m serious, there are countries that’s it’s almost impossible to leave, and others that it’s hard to get to and from once you leave, and yet for centuries people have moved for a better life and opportunity for themselves and their families.
The Uk has to be one of the easier places to emigrate from especially if you are an educated high earner.

WinterMorn · 06/07/2024 00:43

Glengarrybell · 06/07/2024 00:35

I’m sorry I know it’s become a terrible thing to say apparently these days but if the country’s doomed, why stay here? I mean it should have been clear for a while that the tories were not going to magically turn things around, and you have no faith in Labour so why not just find somewhere better?

Muttley17 · 06/07/2024 00:38

They were very vocal about scrapping the spare bedroom subsidy years ago but now say that its not possible. So much for helping the poorest in society, you can’t downsize when theres no suitable social housing

NewName24 · 06/07/2024 00:28

We currently have the highest rate of tax for over 70 years

How do you work that out ?
Can you link to some independent figures ?

NewName24 · 06/07/2024 00:27

TheThingIsYeah · 05/07/2024 22:22

@NewName24 @MissyB1

Ah didn't take long for the excuses!

So people are only "happy to pay more tax" if they are forced to pay more tax?

Ok.

Look, let's be honest, no one would choose to pay more tax so let's not pretend otherwise.

Actually, many, many people would be happy to.
As have stated on so many threads over the last days, weeks and months.

Just because you feel that way, it doesn't mean "everyone else" does.
what a narrow minded way of thinking.

Glengarrybell · 06/07/2024 00:24

Also I don’t want to be too rude here but obviously OBVIOUSLY the tories did a spectacularly terrible job with the economy and general investment even if you measure them by their own vague and meagre standards. As a party they invested in party loyalty at the expense of talent development and while it didn’t matter so much initially and in fact paid off very well at first, in the long term it’s been very destructive. In government they stoked division in the population because it’s genuinely a great and cheap way to gain support (blaming EU, lazy poor people, or immigrants for their failures, or at least writing policy as though they were blaming these) and deflect blame in the short term but at a certain point they ran out of road and had to resort to blaming Labour from 14 years ago and their imaginary version of future Labour who had at times seemed to have already squandered all the lovely future money and plunged us back into free trade with that terrible biggest single market in the world.
oh and each other, they turned on each other, eventually they destroyed the one thing that had protected them, loyalty

caringcarer · 06/07/2024 00:20

mumof1or2 · 05/07/2024 20:27

A lot of people on this thread are just making up rubbish! Labour have said they'll raise the extra money by putting VAT on private school fees and closing all the loopholes so companies such as Facebook and Starbucks have to pay tax in the UK. In their manifesto they clearly set out where the money would come from.

Once they have added 20 percent VAT to school fees and many parents take their DC with some SEN out of independent schools where they could cope on small classes and put them back into state schools it won't save any money. It will just mean the classes get larger for all DC. Labour claims they'll hire 6500 new teachers. This is laughable because there has been a shortage of teachers for years. As older teachers retire it gets worse every year. Yet RR thinks she'll click her fingers and magic all these new teachers up.
