I understand this isn't for everyone but I love a good woo story. Even if you've seen/experienced something but aren't 100% sure and are on the fence, I'd love to hear your stories.

I've had a few experiences myself, nothing majorly scary just in my old house I'd often hear loud clear footsteps when nobody could be there and often saw a shadow figure, sometimes right infront of me and other times in my peripheral so can understand why people think they've seen something but can't be sure. I also worked in a pub that had some poltergeist type activity and various figures had been seen by staff and customers. I'd love to hear yours!

@BirthdayRainbow for goodness sake, they aren't. I am genuinely interested in stories, I am neurodivergent and love and have a big interest in all things unexplained along with being spiritual as I stated earlier. If this thread that started off nicely, is going to turn into some people ruining it with their little theories, I'll ask for the thread to be pulled 🙄

Then there was the little boy.....

Again, both these incidents occurred in the daytime.

The first time I saw the little boy, I was carrying a basket of washing into the kitchen part the sitting room door. Out of the corner if my eye I saw what I thought was my son dancing in front of the TV which was in the corner directly opposite the door. I took two steps back to say "Cool moves dude" or some such thing ..... and there was no-one there and the TV was off. It was literally seconds, one or two, and there was no scope for my son to have got past me without bumping into me. He was about 7 or 8 at the time and not exactly ninja like at the best if times.

The second time I was sitting on the sofa just inside the sitting room door reading a paper with a cuppa and saw my son crawl past me into the room at speed, again out if the corner of my eye. This time I got a clear impression of a white shirt and grey shorts....and possibly braces which he didn't wear of course but that was the image I got. I looked up to ask him what he was up to and again the room was empty.....

A third thing that happened was upstairs. In my previous post about the lift incident, I mentioned a tiny "corridor" leading into my son's bedroom. It was just enough space to put a tall Argos book case in where I kept my shoes and boots (I was a bit of an Imelda when my feet were younger lol). So I was sitting in this corridor having a bit if a dust and sort out if my collection and I knew ExDH had popped out to do a bit of shopping and my son was at school. I suddenly heard, clear as day footsteps coming up the stairs which were old and creaky despite carpeting '- you know how you get familiar with the sounds of a staircase when you live somewhere avling time - it was that. I also heard a few loud coughs, so assumed ex-DH had returned. As he didn't appear I called out, but got no reply and it has gone silent again. So I checked to see if he'd gone into my son's room behind me unseen - nope, nobody there. So I went down to the first floor which was deserted. I was a little freaked out at this point but doubly so as I went to the top of the stairs down to the hall and front door jyst in time to see it open and exDH wrestling several bags of shopping in. He wasn't terribly fleet of foot due to his bad back from his bike accident and used a stick so I could rule out him playing tricks on me. I think it took a full 24 hours for me to stop feeling jittery about that one....

I'm just catching up on this thread.
It seemed to be tootling along quite nicely on its own without the need for prompts.
OP are you collecting the stories for something or other?
I'll give you a minor glitchy one 😉
I was sitting in a cafe & thought of my friend who I hadn't seen in ages. I suddenly thought if I look up she's going to come round the corner into view of the only window. I did and she did. She walked on past with some people & I was too freaked out to get up & go out after her.

I've been thinking for a while the stories are wanted for more than just reading on here.

MistressoftheDarkSide · 17/07/2024 21:30

It was very weird and very unsettling indeed, given it was such a "normal" situation. Animals operate on different frequencies to us and at one point I had five adult cats and 11 kittens in residence at a different flat, (long story lol) but it was still unnerving when 5 or 6 would simultaneously go into high alert and start watching something or following it around the room in unison. Sometimes there'd be the tiniest insect in history, sometimes there was nothing at all....

Tellmeyourwoostories · 17/07/2024 20:02

@MistressoftheDarkSide that is weird! I know what you mean about cats when they're spooked and the harrier jet lol, mine are timid and jumpy too 😂 that laugh sounded terrifying though.

OP posts:
MistressoftheDarkSide · 17/07/2024 18:33

Here's another from my haunted flat collection lol.

Just to recap the flat was over a shop in a Victorian shopping arcade. The kitchen and sitting room both had windows looking out into the arcade so during the day it was bright due to the glass roof and you could clearly hear the hustle and bustle - adding this in to explain that when this incident happened it was a bright normal day and there was no spooky atmosphere or anything.

So my Mum had a part time job in a little art gallery opposite our flat, and it became her habit to get an earlier bus so that she could pop in for a cuppa and a catch up as I was usually at home due to caring responsibilities.

It was somewhere between say 9.30am and 10.30 as that was when she opened up.

So we're sitting in the front room, nattering away when one of our two cats, the more timid one, suddenly started stalking through the door and across the floor. Low down, ears back, the full "hunting" posture. We both clocked him as it was unusual for him to show his furry face, but carried on chatting as it was so unusual and we didn't want to spook him.

Now on one side of the fireplace was a stand on vibrating machine contraption which my ex DH had acquired as it was supposed to be good for his back damaged in a bike accident years ago, before my time. Periodically he'd engage in some short lived regime supposed to help, and this contraption had been one of those things. It had a new purpose - our cat igloo was on it as the base was about 6 inches off the floor taking it out of potential draughts. Obviously the cats hardly used the igloo....

Anyway, Timid cat stalked very slowly across the room until he was about two feet from the igloo.....then Mum and I both heard what could only be described as an electronic sounding demonic laugh from inside the igloo.

We jumped, as did Timid cat who did a manoeuvre similar to a Harrier jump jet doing a three point turn and fled the room at such high speed I swear his paws didn't touch the ground till he landed on the stairs.

Trying to be rational I examined the cat igloo, expecting to see one of my son's toys inside it or something - but it was completely empty, and an investigation of the surrounding area turned up nothing that could account for it.

Now my Mum was one of the least "woo" people ever, and wasn't afraid to scoff and eye roll when I told her some of the oddness that occurred in that flat. But that day she admitted she was stumped and yes, it was very strange indeed.....

Makethisrainstop · 17/07/2024 17:57

This I think is a bit Woo apparently if you're thinking a lot about someone, chances are they are thinking about you!

Tellmeyourwoostories · 17/07/2024 14:31

@gotmyknickersinatwist hi, no it didn't. The thread kept going quiet, hence why I bumped it. Not sure what's wrong with that or what the big deal is, and no I am a spiritual person and enjoy reading woo stories on mumsnet. There hasn't been a woo thread in a while so I decided to make one.

@louise303 May I ask what you your children all saw ?

@holliegee sorry for your loss, but it's really sweet and lovely that she's with you all in spirit and even doing childlike things along with her DB's 😊

Nobody saw a thing! It’s just weird that twice it’s been said with exactly the same description.

I wasn’t very far along, I’d suspected I was but my relationship wasn’t in a good place, so although it was sad for me, I just had to get on and appreciate the children I had x

CoffeeCantata · 15/07/2024 16:14

I think I've told this before on MN, OP, but it spooked me!

We had a lot of what would be called poltergeist activity in our house when our daughter was about 14. Lots of things, but this is something which made me wonder about her...

Context: my husband had a number of 'Cornhill Magazines' from the inter-war years which he'd bought from charity shops. The Cornhill was a literary magazine with short stories, poems and articles - pretty highbrow and academic. I think it was discontinued in the 50s?? Anyway...he'd enjoyed a story called 'Winterwood' in one of these, by a completely obscure author. This was when the children were a baby and a toddler and of course we didn't mention it to them. The old magazines were stored in the loft and the kids had absolutely no knowledge of them.

One day he was sitting at his laptop in the living room when my daughter was about 14. She was also there, looking at her phone. He told me that the story came into his head (after more than a decade) and he was wondering what had made him think about it when my daughter looked at him from across the room and said 'Winterwood!' He was really unsettled and asked her why she'd said it. She had no idea - the word meant nothing to her. Telepathy?

I mean this affectionately - but we've always wondered about her! There've been other instances where it has seemed she's got powers etc beyond the normal, everyday ones.

Several years ago I lived alone and had a peace lily in my flat. It was healthy but never flowered. My Nan, called Lily, was in a care home aged 96 and receiving end of life care. I left for work around 8am one morning and got a call from my Mum shortly after to say she had died in the early hours. I came home from work that afternoon to see one single stem on the plant flowering. Over the course of the next 2-3 days this stem shot up right in the centre of the plant and produced the widest, proudest flower. Put it down to a lovely coincidence but took a little comfort from it, feeling as though it was her way of saying goodbye.
Fast forward to now, I live with DH and we have another peace lily plant in our main bathroom, it was bought as a gift for me when my 3 year old was born. This one has also never flowered - until 3 weeks ago, a few days before our wedding day. I walked into the bathroom one morning and once again saw a single stem with a bright white flower appearing on it, which proceeded to grow over the course of the next few days, just like before!

MrHarleyQuin if your mum does get that kind of smell it's a good idea for her to check her blood sugar x

I thought the same when I read this, my mum also developed diabetes from late stage pancreatic cancer. My sil also had diabetes so I know the pear drop smell is from high sugar levels.

This is informative, thank you. My mum has diabetes and has an odd smell occasionally- I thought she needed to shower but I now know it's a sign of an imbalance.

I had a really weird random coincidence (?) a couple of years ago too.

When he was little our son was obsessed with Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and I found out that the car was on display at a shopping centre a few miles away so we drove him over as a surprise. As we made our way there we were pointing at plane trails and asking him if perhaps it was Chitty which had been flying around. Anyway, at the shopping centre he was able to sit in the car and have his photo taken. That was around 2004/2005.

Back to a couple of years ago and I was out walking the dog in the woods when a plane flew over and I immediately thought back to that day. No reason why it should spring to mind, I hadn't thought about it for years.

10 minutes later I had a text from my son asking if I knew where the photo was of him sitting in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang as he’d just been talking about it with his girlfriend and wanted to show her.

Aw, I do things like that with my mum and daughters.

Nothing as scary as any on this thread more like a coincidence
Walking out of my office block recently and saw a girl and thought to myself wow she looks like Helen who I used to work with, hadn't thought of her for years, and I ideally wondered what she was doing now, walked down to the bus stop and saw the original Helen standing there, who I hadn't seen for 20 years, they were two separate people I might add.

Years ago I had signed up for a voluntary work and they never called me back, about a year I was sleeping when I heard the phone ring down stairs, I suddenly thought that the voluntary work never did call me , when I checked the answer phone message it was the volunteer work apologising for not being in touch my mum said I went pale when I listened to the message

Both things made me feel a little weird

Rainydaydreamer · 14/07/2024 19:23

The old lady next door was very ill with cancer . One morning i was hanging washing in the garden and I looked up and saw her standing in her bedroom window . I remember thinking how very very pale she looked . That evening her daughter came round to tell us her mother died the previous day.

BirthdayRainbow · 14/07/2024 18:23

I went to a show by Sally somebody. She kept saying things to the woman next to me who kept saying no. Six things and six nos. Yet every one fit me. I wish I'd had the nerve to say, I think she means me..

Tellmeyourwoostories · 14/07/2024 17:39

@MarchionessOfMayhem thanks for sharing your stories. The cupping of the face sounds quite eerie, but I'm sure it was sweet seeing dogs often and you got used to seeing them almost like having another pet I guess.

MarchionessOfMayhem · 14/07/2024 17:27

I grew up in a house which had been in our family for about 100 years. There was only one full length mirror in the house so whenever I wanted to dress up or look at myself I'd go to that mirror. Every single time, I could feel someone's hands on my face, like when an adult cups a child's face to look at them. I also saw lots of dog ghosts walking around the house (our house had been a kennels), I found it strangely comforting. I also had an imaginary friend growing up - I wonder now if it was maybe a spirit?
Years and years later, I was at a psychic event and the psychic told me that I had psychic powers but that I was choosing to ignore them (I definitely didn't want them!). He also described my 'spirit guide' to me and I recognised him as an ancestor I had been researching. The details were quite amazing!
I went to a Psychic stage show by quite a famous 'Psychic to the Stars' and she said a word to me (in another language) that she couldn't possibly have known had a connection to me. Very strange.
I worked in a shop in my teens at weekends and the storeroom was always freezing, despite having the heating on. Things would all of a sudden fling off the rails (not fall - literally like someone was throwing them at you). We'd also come in in the morning and all the size 4 shoes would be on the floor - incredibly weird. I did some research and found that a kitchen maid had died in a fire in that building about 80 years previously when it has been a hotel.

My mum had type 3c diabetes, caused by pancreatic cancer. If she hadn't taken her insulin she smelled like pear drops.
I've worked with a couple of diabetic children and they smell like pear drops when their sugars are too high too. Diabetes nurse said its quite common.

So yeah, untreated pancreatic cancer would quite possibly smell pear drop like too.

@Minimili I’m sure I could smell my dad’s cancer too. Would walk into the sitting room he had been sat in and there was a peculiar sweet smell, like he was chewing sweets, pear drops. It was only him in there and he never ate in the sitting room (neither did me or DM).
He hadn’t yet been diagnosed and wasn’t having treatment. He passed away from pancreatic cancer a few months later.
